  • In this paper, we have introduced the x-ray detector built with a CsI:Na scintillation layer deposited on amorphous selenium. To determine the thickness of the CsI:Na layer, we have estimated the transmission spectra and the absorption of continuous x-rays in diagnostic range by using computer simulation (MCNP 4C). A x-ray detector with 65 ${\mu}m$-CsI:Na/30 ${\mu}m$-Se layer has been fabricated by a thermal evaporation technique. SEM and PL measurements have been performed. The dark current and x-ray sensitivity of the fabricated detector has been compared with that of the conventional a-Se detector with 100 ${\mu}m$ thickness. Experimental results show that both detectors exhibit a similar dark current, which was of a low value below $400 pA/cm^2$ at 10 V/${\mu}m$. However, the CsI:Na-Se detector indicates high x-ray sensitivity, roughly 1.3 times that of a conventional a-Se detector. Furthermore, a CsI:Na-Se detector with an aluminium reflective layer shows a 1.8 times higher x-ray sensitivity than an a-Se detector. The hybrid type detector proposed in this work exhibits a low dark current and high x-ray sensitivity, and, in particular, excellent linearity to the x-ray exposure dose.

  • The purpose of the current study was to evaluate a spectrum formulation set employed to modify the neutron spectrum of D-D fusion neutrons in a IS plasma focus device using GEANT4, MCNPX2.6, and FLUKA codes. The set consists of a moderator, reflector, collimator and filters of fast neutron and gamma radiation, which placed on the path of 2.45 MeV neutron energy. The treated neutrons eliminate cancerous tissue with minimal damage to other healthy tissue in a method called neutron therapy. The system optimized for a total neutron yield of 109 (n/s). The numerical results indicate that the GEANT4 code for the cubic geometry in the Beam Shaping Assembly 3 (BSA3) is the best choice for the energy of epithermal neutrons.

  • Radiation dose enhancement is a method of increasing the cross section of interaction, thus increasing the deposited dose. This can contribute to linear energy transfer, LET and relative biological effectiveness, RBE. Previous studies on dose enhancement have been mainly focused on X, ${\gamma}-rays$, but in this study, the dose enhancement was analyzed for proton using Monte Carlo simulation using MCNP6. Based on the mathematical modeling method, energy spectrum and relative intensity of spread out Bragg-peak were calculated, and evaluated dose enhancement factor and dose distribution of dose enhancement material, such as aurum and gadolinium. Dose enhancement factor of 1.085-1.120 folds in aurum, 1.047-1.091 folds in gadolinium was shown. In addition, it showed a decrease of 95% modulation range and practical range. This may lead to an uncertain dose in the tumor tissue as well as dose enhancement. Therefore, it is necessary to make appropriate corrections for spread out Bragg-peak and practical range from mass stopping power. It is expected that Monte Carlo simulation for dose enhancement will be used as basic data for in-vivo and in-vitro experiments.

  • This work presents the synthesis and preparation of a new glass system described by the equation of (70-x) B2O3-5TeO2 -20SrCO3-5ZnO -xBi2O3, x = 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 mol. %, using the melt quenching technique at a melting temperature of 1100 ℃. The photon-shielding characteristics mainly the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of the prepared glass samples were evaluated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation N-particle transport code (MCNP-5) at gamma-ray energy extended from 59 keV to 1408 keV emitted by the radioisotopes Am-241, Ba-133, Cs-137, Co-60, Na-22, and Eu-152. Furthermore, we observed that the Bi2O3 content of the glasses had a significantly stronger impact on the LAC at 59 and 356 keV. The study of the lead equivalent thickness shows that the performance of fabricated glass sample with 15 mol.% of Bi2O3 is four times less than the performance of pure lead at low gamma photon energy while it is enhanced and became two times lower the perforce of pure lead at high energy. Therefore, the fabricated glasses special sample with 15 mol.% of Bi2O3 has good shielding properties in low, intermediate, and high energy intervals.

  • Purpose: Phytosanitary irradiation treatment can effectively control regulated pests while maintaining produce quality. The objective of this study was to establish the best irradiation treatment for mangosteen, a popular tropical fruit, using a Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: Magnetic resonance image (MRI) data were used to generate a 3-D geometry to simulate dose distributions in a mangosteen using a radiation transport code (MCNP5). Microsoft Excel with visual basic application (VBA) was used to divide the image data into seed, flesh, and rind. Radiation energies used for the simulation were 10 MeV (high-energy) and 1.35 MeV (low-energy) for the electron beam, 5 MeV for X-rays, and 1.25 MeV for gamma rays from Co-60. Results: At 5 MeV X-rays and 1.25 MeV gamma rays, all areas (seeds, flesh, and rind) were irradiated ranging from 0.3 ~ 0.7 kGy. The average doses decreased as the number of fruit increased. For a 10 MeV electron beam, the dose distribution was biased: the dose for the rind where the electrons entered was $0.45{\pm}0.03$ kGy and the other side was $0.24 {\pm}0.10$ kGy. Use of an electron kinetic energy absorber improved the dose distribution in mangosteens. For the 1.35 MeV electron beam, the dose was shown only in the rind on the irradiated side; no significant dose was found in the flesh or seeds. One rotation of the fruit while in front of the beam improved the dose distribution around the entire rind. Conclusion: These results are invaluable for determining the ideal irradiation conditions for phytosanitary irradiation treatment of tropical fruit.

  • The accuracy of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in estimating the computed tomography radiation dose is highly dependent on the accuracy of CT scanner model. A system was developed to observe the 3D model intuitively and to calculate the X-ray energy spectrum and the bowtie (BT) filter model more accurately in Monte Carlo N-particle (MCNP). Labview's built-in Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) was used to display basic surfaces, and constructive solid geometry (CSG) method was used to realize Boolean operations. The energy spectrum was calculated by simulating the process of electronic shooting and the BT filter model was accurately modeled based on the calculated shape curve. Physical data from a study was used as an example to illustrate the accuracy of the constructed model. RMSE between the simulation and the measurement results were 0.97% and 0.74% for two filters of different shapes. It can be seen from the comparison results that to obtain an accurate CT scanner model, physical measurements should be taken as the standard. The energy spectrum library should be established based on Monte Carlo simulations with modifiable input files. It is necessary to use the three-segment splicing modeling method to construct the bowtie filter model.

  • The synthetic B2O3-As2O3 glass ceramic are prepared to investigate the physical properties and the radiation shielding capabilities with the variation of concentration of the As2O3 with 10, 20, 30, and 40%, respectively. XRD analyses are performed on the fabricated glass-ceramic and depicted the improvement of crystallinity by adding As2O3. The radiation shielding properties are studied for the B2O3-As2O3 glass ceramic. The values of linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) are varied with the variation of incident photon gamma energy (23.1-103 keV). The LAC values enhanced from 12.19 cm-1-37.75 cm-1 by raising the As2O3 concentration from 10 to 40 mol% at low gamma energy (23.1 keV) for BAs10 and BAs40, respectively. Among the shielding parameters, the half-value layer, transmission factor, and radiation protection efficiency are estimated. Furthermore, the fabricated samples of glass ceramic have low manufacturing costs and good shielding features compared to the previous work. It can be concluded the B2O3-As2O3 glass ceramic is appropriate to apply in X-ray or low-energy gamma-ray shielding applications.
