Background: Workers in pesticide manufacturing industries are constantly exposed to pesticides. Genetic biomonitoring provides an early identification of potential cancer and genetic diseases in exposed populations. The objectives of this biomonitoring study were to assess DNA damage through comet assay in blood samples collected from industry workers and compare these results with those of classical analytical techniques used for complete blood count analysis. Methods: Samples from controls (n = 20) and exposed workers (n = 38) from an industrial area in Multan, Pakistan, were subjected to various tests. Malathion residues in blood samples were measured by gas chromatography. Results: The exposed workers who were employed in the pesticide manufacturing industry for a longer period (i.e., 13-25 years) had significantly higher DNA tail length ($7.04{\mu}m$) than the controls ($0.94{\mu}m$). Workers in the exposed group also had higher white blood cell and red blood cell counts, and lower levels of mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), MCH concentration, and mean corpuscular volume in comparison with normal levels for these parameters. Malathion was not detected in the control group. However, in the exposed group, 72% of whole blood samples had malathion with a mean value of 0.14 mg/L (range 0.01-0.31 mg/L). Conclusion: We found a strong correlation ($R^2=0.91$) between DNA damage in terms of tail length and malathion concentration in blood. Intensive efforts and trainings are thus required to build awareness about safety practices and to change industrial workers' attitude to prevent harmful environmental and anthropogenic effects.
This study was carried out to investigate fuel decomposition characteristics and coke formation according to types of endothermic fuels and methods of catalyst molding. Methylcyclohexane (MCH), n-dodecane, and exo-tetrahydrodipentadiene (exo-THDCP) were used as the endothermic fuels. As a catalyst, USY720 supported with platinum was used. It was manufactured by only using pressure to disk-type, or pelletized with a binder and a silica solution. The characteristics of the catalysts according to the molding method were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, and ammonia temperature programmed desorption analysis. The reaction was carried out under conditions of high temperature and high pressure ($500^{\circ}C$, 50 bar) in which the fuel could exist in a supercritical state. The product was analyzed by gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer and the coke produced by the catalyst was analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer. After the reaction, the composition of the products varied greatly depending on the structure of the fuel. In addition, the crystallinity and surface properties of the catalysts were not changed by the method of catalyst molding, but the changes of the acid sites and the pore characteristics were observed, which resulted in changes in the amount and composition of products and coke.

Pigs have been used widely in biomedical research owing to their physiologic and anatomic similarities to humans. Analysis of the hematologic and biochemical values in pigs is an important basis for biomedical research and veterinary clinical diagnosis, but research on transgenic pigs has been sparse. This study was conducted to obtain basic data on transgenic pigs and to describe and compare the reference values for hematologic and biochemical parameters in human tissue plasminogen activator (htPA) transgenic pigs vs normal pigs. Blood samples were obtained from 7 normal LY (Landrace-Yorkshire crossbred) pigs and 8 transgenic pigs and 16 hematologic and 15 serum biochemical parameters were tested. Among the hematologic parameters tested, significant differences were observed in the red blood cells (RBC), mean red blood cell hemoglobin (MCH), and lymphocytes (LYM), between the non-transgenic and transgenic pigs. Among the biochemical parameters tested, the blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total protein (TP), cholesterol (CHOL), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine (CREA), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), globin (GOB), and amylase (AMYL) showed significant differences between the two groups. Thus, the values determined in this study can be used as basic reference values for transgenic pigs and will contribute to their use in biomedical research.

Crucian carp, Carassius carassius (Weight 39.7±3.1 g, Length 14.8±0.5 cm) were exposed to waterborne nickel at 0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 mg Ni2+/l. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of C. carassius exposed to waterborne nickel was 117.69 mg Ni2+/l. In hematological parameters, RBC counts was significantly increased at 48 hours, whereas a significant decrease was observed at 96 hours. The MCV and MCH were significantly increased in the concentration of 80 mg Ni2+/l at 96 hours. The plasma components such as calcium, magnesium, glucose, cholesterol, total protein, AST, ALT and ALP were significantly changed by waterbonre nickel exposure. The results of this study suggest that the nickel exposure to C. carassius affects the survival rates, hematological parameters and plasma components as toxicity

Crucian carp, Carassius carassius (Weight 42.4 ± 9.0 g, Length 15.0 ± 1.0 cm) were exposed to waterborne zinc at 0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg Zn2+/l for 96 hours. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) at 96 hours of crucian carp, C. carassius exposed to waterborne zinc was 51.58 mg Zn2+/l. In hematological parameters, the RBC count was significantly decreased in the concentration of 40 mg Zn2+/l at 48 hours, whereas the hematocrit was significantly increased by zinc exposure. The MCV (mean corpuscular volume) (µl) and MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) (pg) were significantly increased in the concentration of 40 mg Zn2+/l at 48 hours. The plasma components such as calcium, magnesium, glucose, cholesterol, total protein and ALT (Alanine aminotransminase) were significantly changed by zinc exposure. The results of this study suggest that the zinc exposure to C. carassius induced the significant physiological changes in the hematological parameters and plasma components as toxicity.
To understand the hemolytic anemia (HA) in children, the diagnostic approach and management of hereditary and acquired HA are described. The hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) can be classified according to the pathogenesis into three types : RBC membrane defects, hemoglobinopathies, and RBC enzymopathies. Clinical characteristics, laboratory findings and molecular defects of these three types are presented briefly. In Korea, HHA due to the RBC membrane defect, hereditary spherocytosis had been reported often but HHA due to hemoglobinopathies and RBC enzymopathies had been thought to be relatively rare. With recent development in the molecular diagnosis, ${\beta}$ thalassemia, mostly heterozygote, G6PD and pyruvate kinase deficiency have been reported with gene characterization. If the patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia show unproportionally low MCV or MCH or refractory to the iron therapy, hemoglobin electrophoresis and gene analysis for thalassemia or other unstable hemoglobinopathies need to be done accordingly. The global movement of the population especially from the region prevalent of hemoglobinopathies or enzymopathies to Korea warrants considering broad spectrum of etiology for the diagnosis of HHA. Aquired HA resulting from extracellular factors such as autoimmune HA from warm antibody, cold agglutinin and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria as well as nonimmune HA are described briefly.
The haematological profiles of camel calves of either sex were monitored at monthly intervals between 1-12 months of age. RBC, Hb and PCV increased with age for several months, with corresponding increases in MCH and MCHC, and a relative reduction in MCV. WBC and lymphocyte counts were highest at the age of 1 month, fell progressively during the following 6 months, and stabilized thereafter. Neutrophils were also highest at the age of one month and decreased slowly with advancing age. Eosinophils, monocytes and basophils fluctuated only from month to month. Age effect was significant for WBC, lymphocytes and neutrophils, and all the erythrocytic parameters, except MCV. Sex effect was significant for Hb and eosinophils.

One of the major problems of biological ToF-SIMS imaging is the lack of protein and peptide imaging. Most of biological story telling is mianly based on proteins. The biological implication of lipid ToF-SIMS imaging would be much higher if protein imaging is provided together. Utilizing high secondary ion yields of metals, proteins can be ToF-SIMS imaged with nanoparticle tagged proteins. Nanoparticles such as Fe3O4, SiO2, PbS were used for imaing NeuN, MCH, Orexin A, ${\alpha}$ synucline, TH(Tryosine Hydroxylase) in mouse tissues with a spatial resolution of ${\sim}2{\mu}m$ using a TOF-SIMS. Lipids and neurotransmitters images obtained simultaneously with protein images were overlayed for more deeper understanding of neurobiology, which is not allowed by any other bioimaging technqiues. The protein images from TOF-SIMS were compared with confocal fluorescence microscopy and NanoSIMS images. A new sample preparation method for imaging single cell membranes in a tissue using the vibrotome technique to prepare a tissue slice without any fixation and freeze drying will be also presented briefly for Hippocampus and Hypothalamus tissues.
This study find out the effect of red Ginseng extract(1.0g/kg) against TBTO(10, 20 and 40mg/kg) poisoning on each organs, hematological, serum biochemistry in rat for 3 weeks. 1. Each organ weight per body weight ration in treated group, all rats liver were significantly increased. (P<0.05,P<0.01)2. Iin TBTO treated group, the hematological parameters such as WBC, RBC, Hgb, Hct, PLt, MCV, MCH and MCHC in serum were remarkably decreased in comparison to that of control group. Only added red Ginseng extract group were slightly decreased but not significanted. 3. In TBTO treated group, the biochemical parameters such as AST, ALT in serum were remarkable elevated in comparison to that control group (P>0.05).4. In TBTO treated group, the activity of Triglyceride in serum of male rat were significantly increased in comparison to that of control group (P<0.05, P<0.01).5. In case of B.U.N activity in treated group(10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) were almost increased in comparison to that of control group, but not added red Ginseng extract.
While the threat from traditional communicable diseases have been decreasing non communicable chronic diseases are increasing due to the aging of population and change in life pattern of the people such as over intake of cholesterol and lack of physical exercise etc. On the other hand, since 1980s, AIDS is spreading rapidly throughout the globe and environmental pollution, accidents, addictive diseases such as drug abuse and alcoholism are becoming serious factors to hinder the health promotion of the people. In order to improve general public health and promote individual health status, existing program for communicable disease control by the government such as tuberculosis, leprosy, STD and acute communicable diseases should be effectively continued. In principle, effort should be placed on eradication of source of infection, reduction of communicability of source in infection, treatment of source of infection as well as increase of individual registance to the diseases through immunization and improvement of physical status. Since the pattern of illness is being shifted from communicable diseases to non communicable chronic diseases such as cancer, cerebral hemorrhage, heart disease and hypertention etc., special emphasis should be placed on the prevention and control of those adult diseases. Early detection of the patients, registration and treatment of patients and health education should be systematically developed for effective control of the diseases. In addition, program activities on MCH, nutrition, dentistry, mental health, environmental health, accident prevention. medical delivery system, health insurance. and all other health issues should be improved in order to achieve our goal of health promotion.
