  • Integration of various bottoming cycles such as the gas turbine (GT) cycle, organic Rankine cycle, and oxy-fuel combustion cycle with an molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power-generation system was analyzed, and the performance of the power-generation system in the three cases were compared. Parametric analysis of the three different integrated systems was carried out under conditions corresponding to the practical use and operation of MCFC, and the optimal design condition for each system was derived. The MCFC/oxy-combustion system exhibited the greatest power upgrade from the MCFC-only system, while the MCFC/GT system showed the greatest efficiency enhancement.

  • This paper proposes critical load following back-up system using MCFC stack. This system enables MCFC generation system to supply power to critical load without UPS and to generate rated power under grid fault state. This back-up system includes 'Load Leveler' that is connected with 3-phase inverter and is controlled by additional algorithm that includes critical load following. The proposed system and algorithm are verified by computer simulation based on 5kW system.

  • This paper presents the development and testing of a power conditioning system(PCS) for application to a 100kW Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) generation system. The MCFC generation system is a part of a four year government funded research project that began in 2001. This paper presents the results of various tests and performance verification of the 100kW PCS using a DC power system that simulates the DC output of the MCFC fuel cell. Performance of the DC/DC, DC/AC converters were verified, and basic control functions such as grid connection, protection and characteristics of each components were tested. The tests were performed under light load and rated load conditions to verify the operation efficiency, power quality effects, and stability of the PCS.

  • The scale of 2.4 MW MCFC was taken to construct a high-efficiency and economical power generation system without CO2 emission into the atmosphere for utilizing its exhaust gas. The conventional steam turbine power generation system (STGS) was evaluated and the net generated power (NGP) was estimated to be only 133 kW and the STGS is not economically feasible. A CO2-caputuring repowering system was proposed, where low temperature steam (LTS) produced at HRSG by using exhaust gas from MCFC is utilized as a main working fluid of a gas turbine, and the temperature of LTS was raised by combusting fuel in a combustor by using pure oxygen, not the air. It has been shown that NGP of the proposed system is 264 kW, and CO2 reduction amount is 608 t-CO2/y, compared to 306 t-CO2/y of STGS. The CO2 reduction cost was estimated to be negligible small, even when the costs of oxygen production and CO2 liquefaction facilities etc. were taken into account.

  • Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) with high electrical efficiency and low environmental effect has been developed for the commercial application of power generation fields. Recently we have built a 25 kW molten carbonate fuel cell power generation system and tested it. The MCFC system is composed of diverse peripheral units such as reformer, pre-heater, water purifier. electrical loader, gas supplier, and recycling systems. The stack itself was made of 40 cells of $6.000 cm^2$ area each. The stack showed an output of 28.6 kW power and a reliable performance at atmospheric operation. while in pressurized operation the stack showed an output 25.6 kW lower than the atmospheric operation. The reason of lower performance of pressurized operation was caused from a gas cross over shown in few cells in the stack.

  • Recently, the development of several hundreds of kW scale PCS for fuel cell generation is required as commercialization process of distributed generation systems using high temperature fuel cells such as MCFC begins. This paper proposes and optimized topology suitable for MCFC fuel cell generation system and LCL filter design method considering voltage quality of local loads such as MBOP. An interleaving technique is applied to step-up DC-DC converter, optimized number of phases is determined considering efficiency and volume. Also, a LCL filter design method is proposed considering quality of current injected to the grid as well as that of voltage across the local load. The proposed PCS system is validated through reduced 1kW prototype.

  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) started a fuel cell project to develop alternative sources of electric power because of the rapid increase in power demand and global environmental problems. For the development of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), KEPCO started the project in 1993 to develop a 2 kW MCFC system and finished it at the end of 1996. In this project, $ASPEN^+$ was utilized to design the 2 kW MCFC generation system. Based on this simulation, a power generation system was designed and installed for operation and a long term test of internally manifolded 2 kW class MCFC stack. This stack has 20 cells with an effective electrode area of $1000\;cm^2$. It was run at 0.84 V and $150\;mA/cm^2$ and was operated for more than 3,250 hours continuously. This paper describes the system configuration and its control and measurement units. An analysis of the stack performance, the effect of gas utilization ratio, and the stack performance requirements are also discussed.
