  • A dynamic simulation of a turbo-shaft engine was performed for analysis of transient-state and engine-starting characteristics using the MATLAB/SIMULINKTM. The turbo-shaft engine was modelled based on thermodynamic and rotor dynamic relations. The analysis of engine starting characteristics was performed by monitoring the rate of the pressure, temperature and mechanical torque changes along the engine stations by the torque input generated from the accessary power unit and transmitted to the power turbine. The simulation of the transient-state characteristics of the engine was performed under fuel flow rate increase from the steady-state condition. For the future study, engine control unit will be added to the basic turbo-shaft engine model to enhance capability of engine performance simulation.

  • Repeated hardware tests and tuning, investing cost and time, are usually required to assure a satisfactory performance of the suspension seat. In this study, an EILS(ECU-in-the-loop) method was proposed to develop a controller for a semi-active suspension seat with a MR(magneto-rheological) damper. EILS system was developed using a real-time seat dynamics model communicating with ECU hardwares under a closed loop environment utilizing Matlab/Simulink and xPC $TargetBox^{TM}$. A sky-hook based control algorithm with optimized damping coefficients was verified to reduce the energy consumption and to improve the vibration response performance.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop a dynamic model of a human and to investigate the effect of a walker on an elderly subject's motions, such as sit-to-stand (STS) motion and normal gait, by using this model. A human model consisting of 15 segments and 14 joints was developed, embedded in $RecurDyn^{TM}$, and connected through a Simulink$^{(R)}$ interface with collected motion data. The model was validated by comparisons between joint kinematic results from inverse dynamics (Matlab$^{(R)}$-based in-house program) and from $RecurDyn^{TM}$ simulation during walking. The results indicate that the elderly walker induced a longer movement time in walking, such that the speed of joint flexion/extension was slower than that during a normal gait. The results showed that the muscle activities of parts of the ankle and hamstring were altered by use of the elderly walker. The technique used in this study could be very helpful in applications to biomechanical fields.
