The current literature on discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) based analysis of IEEE 802.15.6 MAC protocols for wireless body area networks (WBANs), do not consider the ACK timeout state, wherein the colliding nodes check the ill fate of their transmissions, while other contending nodes perform backoff check that slot as usual. In this paper, our DTMC model accurately captures the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism of IEEE 802.15.6 medium access control (MAC) and allows the contending nodes performing backoff to utilize the ACK timeout slot during collisions. The compared rigorous results are obtained by considering a non-ideal channel in non-saturation conditions, and CSMA/CA parameters pertaining to UWB PHY of IEEE 802.15.6 MAC protocols.

On the wireless sensor network MAC protocols, one of main issues is energy enciency. Since several asynchronous wireless sensor network MAC protocols with short preamble sampling scheme can be operated without setting the timing synchronization among neighbor nodes, it consumes a little energy for maintaining protocols. However, each node encounters either preamble or data overhearing problem, because each node wakes up in a different time and must check whether the frame is being sent to itself or not. To solve this overhearing problem, we newly propose B-MAC++ that can reduce the overhearing energy consumption by using short preambles with destination address and payload length. from simulation results, we show that the proposed B-MAC++ has advantageous in terms of power consumption efficiency over other asynchronous wireless sensor network MAC protocols.

Recently, the pipeline-forwarding has been proposed as a new technique to resolve the end-to-end latency problem of the duty-cycle MAC protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Some protocols based on this technique such as PMAC and PRI-MAC have shown an improvement not only in terms of reducing end-to-end latency but also in terms of reducing power consumption. In these protocols, however, the sensor nodes still waste a significant amount of energy for unnecessary idle listening during contention period of upstream nodes to check the channel activity. This paper proposes a new pipeline-forwarding duty-cycle MAC protocol, named RP-MAC (Reduced Pipelined duty-cycle MAC), which tries to reduce the waste of energy. By taking advantage of ACK mechanism and shortening the handshaking procedure, RP-MAC minimizes the time for checking the channel and therefore reduces the energy consumption due to unnecessary idle listening. When comparing RP-MAC with the existing solution PRI-MAC and RMAC, our QualNet-based simulation results show a significant improvement in term of energy consumption.

The fundamental design goal of wireless sensor MAC protocols is to minimize unnecessary power consumption of the sensor nodes, because of its stringent resource constraints and ultra-power limitation. In existing MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), duty cycling, in which each node periodically cycles between the active and sleep states, has been introduced to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. Existing MAC schemes, however, use a fixed duty cycling regardless of multi-hop communication and traffic fluctuations. On the other hand, there is a tradeoff between energy efficiency and delay caused by duty cycling mechanism in multi-hop communication and existing MAC approaches only tend to improve energy efficiency with sacrificing data delivery delay. In this paper, we propose two different MAC schemes (ADS-MAC and ELA-MAC) using closed-loop control in order to achieve both energy savings and minimal delay in wireless sensor networks. The two proposed MAC schemes, which are synchronous and asynchronous approaches, respectively, utilize an adaptive timer and a successive preload frame with closed-loop control for adaptive duty cycling. As a result, the analysis and the simulation results show that our schemes outperform existing schemes in terms of energy efficiency and delivery delay.
In recent years, the employment of directional antennas in ad hoc networks has significantly increased. MAC protocols for ad hoc networks with directional antennas have the potentiality of spatial reuse, large coverage range and network capacity, which mitigates the negative effects associated with omnidirectional antenna systems. However, they suffer from some issues such as hidden terminal problems, deafness, neighbor discovery, flaws with directional carrier sensing, etc. In this paper, we have surveyed the MAC protocols for ad hoc networks with directional antennas, which have been published in the literature, and compared them qualitatively in terms of major characteristics and network performances.

In the evolution from wireless sensor networks(WSNs) to ubiquitous sensor networks(USNs), technologies that can support intensive data-traffic loads, large number of users, improved interoperability, and extreme longevity are required. Therefore, efficient communication time coordination control and low power consumption becomes one of the most important design goals for USN MAC protocols. So far several time division multiplexed (TDM) MAC protocols have been proposed. However, since the pros and cons of existing protocols are not easy to analyze, it becomes a challenging task to design improved TOM MAC protocols. Based on this objective, this paper provides a novel protocol analysis along with a message complexity derivation and comparison of the existing TDM MAC protocols.
In underwater communications, there are many challenges due to energy limitations, long propagation delay, low data rate, and high power loss, unlike terrestrial RF communications. Especially, the propagation delay of underwater acoustic channel is five orders of magnitude higher than in electro-magnetic terrestrial channels due to the low speed of sound(1,500m/s). Thus, the MAC protocols for terrestrial communications are not suitable for underwater network. In this paper, we studied the considerations for MAC protocol in underwater acoustic channel. Here, we concentrated on CSMA based MAC protocols. From the results, we confirmed that the number of control packets has an important effect on the performance in underwater environment. These results would be useful in designing MAC protocols for underwater acoustic communications.
Energy harvesting (EH) technology in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is gaining increasing popularity through removing the burden of having to replace/recharge depleted energy sources by energy harvester devices. EH provides an alternative source of energy from the surrounding environment; therefore, by exploiting the EH process, WSNs can achieve a perpetual lifetime. In view of this, emphasis is being placed on the design of new medium access control (MAC) protocols that aim to maximize the lifetime of WSNs by using the maximum possible amount of harvested energy instead of saving any residual energy, given that the rate of energy harvested is greater than that which is consumed. Various MAC protocols with the objective of exploiting ambient energy have been proposed for energy-harvesting WSNs (EH-WSNs). In this paper, first, the fundamental properties of EH-WSN architecture are outlined. Then, several MAC protocols proposed for EH-WSNs are presented, describing their operating principles and underlying features. To give an insight into future research directions, open research issues (key ideas) with respect to design trade-offs are discussed at the end of this paper.

This paper analyses the message complexity of TDMA ad hoc MAC protocols. Since the network resource of ad hoc networks is limited due to the multiple interferences and the contention-based wireless channel, the scalability issue is one of the main research topics in developing ad hoc algorithms. Simulation demonstrates that SMACS protocol has the lowest message complexity, whereas TMMAC has the highest. In addition, it is found that since the effect of unicast dominates in the message complexity compared to other factors with an increasing number of nodes, Z-MAC tends to have the property of linearity, whereas BMA and TMMAC show exponential increases in their complexities.

In this paper, a node architecture of WDM metro network for connecting broadband access networks to converge wire/wireless networks. In consideration of the proposed node architecture and network requirements we proposed and evaluated medium access control protocols. We review WDM related technologies of sub-carrier multiplexing and optical components in order to resolve the bottleneck between optical backbone networks md access networks, and a access node architecture sharing common wavelength is introduced. Source-stripping (SS) MAC protocol Is evaluated under the proposed functional node architecture. DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Source-Stripping) and DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Intermediate-Stripping) MAC protocols are described to increase the slot-reuse factor which is low on SS MAC protocol. The key function of new MAC protocols regards the optical switch module of proposed node architecture and helps intermediate or source access nodes for dropping slots to destinations of different wavelength group. Thus, slot-reuse factor increases as the MAC protocols reduce the unnecessary ring-rotation of transferred slots. We use a numerical analysis to expect bandwidth efficiency and maximum throughput by slot-reuse factor Throughput network simulation, the verification of throughput, queuing delay, and transmission fairness are compared among MAC protocols.
