Pathless Multihop Packet Forwarding Protocol for Inter-vehicular Communication (차량간 통신을 위한 비경로형 멀티 홉 패킷 포워딩 프로토콜)

  • Conventional topology-based routing protocols are not suitable for inter-vehicular communication, where frequent route updates are necessary due to continuous and abrupt changes in network topology Position-based routing protocols are widely accepted to better serve their purpose in such a scenario as they do not require path discovery or maintenance. However they have to deal with the overhead of the location service and inaccurate position information. This paper proposes the MMFP (Multi-hop MAC Forwarding Protocol) for inter-vehicle communication that relies on reachability information collected from received packets in making a forwarding decision without path discovery. The MMFP is designed as an extension to the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer to ensure accuracy in its time-critical operations. This paper also presents some simulation results that demonstrate the superior performance of the MMFP over AODV in a realistic inter-vehicular communication.

A Forwarding Engine based on the Packet Processor for MPLS LER (MPLS LER을 위한 패킷 프로세서 기반의 포워딩 엔진)

  • The forwarding enging, which handles the incoming frames and forwards them to the appropriate outgoing interface, is the crucial factor of the router´s performance. As the MPLS label edge router provides the facility that it is capable of interworking with various kinds of networks, the forwarding engine should have the flexibility processing the corresponding types of frames from such network interfaces. In order to support the flexibility, we implement the forwarding engine for the MPLS LER with ATM interfaces based on the programmable Ethernet packet processor. By exploiting instinct loop-back functionality of Ethernet packet processor, our forwarding engine handles and forwards the frames from/to ATM interfaces. The performance of our forwarding engine is evaluated by experiments on the effect of looping frames back and the number of Ethernet packet processor´s instructions.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle Broadcast Protocols Based on Wireless Multi-hop Communication (무선 멀티 홉 통신 기반의 차량간 브로드캐스트 프로토콜)

  • Inter-vehicular communication that propagates information without infrastructures has drawn a lot of interest. However, it is difficult to apply conventional ad-hoc routing protocols directly in inter-vehicular communication due to frequent changes in the network topology caused by high mobility of the vehicles. MMFP(Multi-hop MAC Forwarding) is a unicast forwarding protocol that transport packets based on the reachability information instead of path selection or position information. However, delivering public safety messages informing road conditions such as collision, obstacles and fog through inter-vehicular communication requires broadcast rather than unicast since these messages contain information valuable to most drivers within a close proximity. Flooding is one of the simplest methods for multi-hop broadcast, but it suffers from reduced packet delivery-ratio and high transmission delay due to an excessive number of duplicated packets. This paper presents two multi-hop broadcast protocols for inter-vehicular communication that extend the MMFP. UMHB(Unreliable Multi-Hop Broadcast) mitigates the duplicated packets of MMFP by limiting the number of nodes to rebroadcast packets. UMHB, however, still suffers from low delivery ratio. RMHB(Reliable Multi-Hop Broadcast) uses acknowledgement and retransmission in order to improve the reliability of UMHB at the cost of increase in transmission delay, which we show through simulation is within an acceptable range for collision avoidance application.

A Reputation based Cooperative Routing Scheme for End-to-End Reliable Communications in Multi-hop Wireless Networks (다중 홉 무선 네트워크에서 종단 간 신뢰성 통신을 위한 평판 기반의 협력적 라우팅 기법)

  • If a certain relay node in multi-hop wireless networks might become a malicious node that does not cooperate with other nodes or a selfish node, network throughput will be dramatically decreased. Most of existing ad hoc routing protocols assuming that the nodes will fully cooperate with other nodes do not resolve the problem of network performance degradation due to malicious and selfish nodes. This paper presents the CARE (Cooperative Ad hoc routing protocol based REputation) scheme incorporating the reputation management that can achieve a multi-hop wireless network with high throughput performance. The proposed scheme provides the horizontal cross-layer approach which can identify misbehaving malicious, selfish nodes dropped out of the hop-by-hop based packet processing in the network and then set up an optimal packet routing path that will detour misbehaving nodes. And the vertical cross-layer approach contained in the CARE scheme attempts to improve the quality of routing paths by exploiting the quality of link information received from the MAC layer. Besides, it provides high TCP throughput by exploiting the reputation values of nodes acquired from the network layer into the transport layer. A case study on experiments and simulations shows that the CARE scheme incorporating vertical and horizontal cross-layer approaches yields better performance in terms of the low rate of packet loss, fast average packet delivery time, and high TCP throughput between end-to-end nodes.
