A full-scale field test was conducted to investigate the arching effect of an embankment pile. The arching effect calculated from the test results was compared with theoretical values. Measurements obtained from a load cell and an earth pressure cell during the field test reflected the arching effect of the embankment pile well. The arching effect measured by load cells for an embankment height of 3m or less was smaller than the theoretical value with the assumption of plain strain. The measured effect for a height of 4 m or more was larger than the theoretical value. In contrast to the consistent decrease of the theoretical arching effect, the arching effect obtained from the field test shows continually increasing trends. The arching effects calculated from the earth pressure cells were greater than those from the theory under the plain strain assumption, but the trend was similar to the theoretical one. The arching effects measured by the earth pressure cells an embankment heights of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 m were 1.05, 1.23, 1.29, 1.28, and 1.29 times greater than those from the theory under the assumption of plain strain. The arching effects from the field test were much greater than those from the theory under the installation of a pile grid.
Changes in the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) isoenzymes and isoforms in human serum have a major diagnostic value, therefore the regulation of ALP activities is a valuable target for therapeutic interventions. To assess the pharmacological activity of retinoids, i.e., all-trans retinoic acid and 13-cis retinoic acid, their tissue-specific inhibitory effect on human serum ALP activity was elucidated by chemical inhibition methods, heat-sensitive inactivation, and wheat-germ lectin precipitation test. Retinoids showed significant inhibition of the total ALP activity in human serum at a concentration of 5 mM. All-trans retinoic acid (5 mM) and 13-cis retinoic acid (5 mM) inhibited ALP activities by up to 12% and 15%, respectively, compared to that by guanidine hydrochloride (200 mM). L-phenylalanine (100 mM) and urea (30 mM) had no further inhibitory effect on ALP activities in human serum pretreated with retinoids (5 mM). Retinoids significantly inhibited ALP activities by up to 20% compared with that of tetramisole (30 mM). The ALP activities in retinoid-pretreated serum remained unchanged after the heat inactivation process. These results suggest that retinoids are inhibitors of the intestinal ALP isoenzyme. Remarkably, retinoids revealed potent inhibitory activities against ALP in wheat-germ lectin precipitant serum, indicating that they also function as inhibitors of the bone ALP isoform. The results show that retinoids inhibit the specific tissue-derived human serum ALP activities, moreover, the inhibitory effect of retinoids against bone ALP activity suggests their clinical utility as monitoring and prevention of metastasis of bone cancer.
A marine bacterium producing carotenoid was isolated from the Yosu coastal area of South Korea, and has been recorded as MCPBK-1. It was identified as Curtobacterium sp.. The optimum conditions of marine carotenoid fermentation from Cutobacterium sp. were pH 7.0, a temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, 4 mM fructose as a carbon source, 0.07% tryptone as a nitrogen source, 0.5 mM $M^{+2}$ ion as a mineral source and $1{\;}\mu\textrm{M}$ of cyanocobalamine as a growth factor in a $7{\;}\ell$ jar-fermentor. 13.0 mg/ml of the marine carotenoid were produced under optimum conditions. The crude marine carotenoid isolated was composed of 5 different compounds, i.e : tunaxanthin(86.6%), diatoxanthin (7.1%), ${\beta}-carotene$ (2.1%), canthaxanthin(1.9%) and cynthiaxanthin (1.9%). Physiological properties including antibacterial activity, cytotoxic effect, antioxidative effect and free radical scavenging activity were characterized with the crude carotenoid, which exhibited no antibacterial activity against E. coli and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, but a strong cytotoxic effect against cancer cells such as HepG2 (Hepatocellular carcinoma, human, ATCC HB-8065) and HeLa (Cervical carcinoma, human, ATCC CCL-2) cells, the ratios of impediment were 86.4% and 39.2%, respectively. This carotenoid, also, expressed a strong antioxidative effect (83%) against CCL-13 (diploid, monotypic hepatocyte, human, ATCC CCL-13) and exhibited free radical scavenging activity (43.4%) when using at a concentration of $50{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ of the crude carotenoid.
The purpose of this report was to study visual effect and functional effect of waist line location of slacks for females in 20'. 1. Differences of visual effect of slacks waist line change to be expressed that mature, sexual and casual slacks waist line were W4 or W5, looks like long leg and mature and formal slacks waist line was W1, slim lower part of the body and flat slacks waist line was W4. 2. Analysis result of functional effect difference with the location variation of slacks waist line were as follows. In all motions(M1, M2, M3, M4) W2 that downed 7cm-6cm-6cm from natural waist line was valued as the most comfortable, W1 and W5 were valued as discomfortable, where waist line was too high or too low.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether vitamin B6(B6) deficiency affects fuel utilization and blood cholesterol profile with exercise-training. Twenty-four rats were fed a B6 deficient(-B6) diet or a control (+B6) diet for 5 weeks and either exercised(EX) or nonexercised (NE). EX rats were exercised on treadmill(10$^{\circ}$, 0.5-0.8km/h) for 20 minutes everyday. Glucose(GLU), glycogen (GLY), protein(PRO), trglyceride(TG), free fatty acid(FFA), total cholesterl(TC), HDL-cholesterol(HDL-C) and LDL-choleterol(LDL-C) were compared in plasma(P), liver(L) and skeletal muscle(M) of rats. There was a vitamin effect on the level of P-GLU, P-TG, M-TG, L-GLY, L-PRO and an exercise effect on the level of P-PRO, P-FFA, M-PRO, L-GLY, L-TG, P-TC, P-HDL-C, P-LDL-C. Compared to +B6 rats were lower and there were no differences in P-GLU, P-FFA, P-TG. M-GLY, L-TG, P-TC and P-HDL-C. In EX group, the level of P-TG was higher and M-PRO was lower in -B6 rats. There were no differences in M-GLY, L-TG, P-TC and P-HDL-C. These results suggest that a lowered intake of vitamin B6 may impair the adaptation of animals to fuel metabolism related to a decrease of fatty acid oxidation and attenuates the exercise-traning effect on blood lipid profile.
This study was investigated to evaluate the effect of the sodium ion and pH on toxicity of dinitrophenol at high concentrations (0.41 to 0.54 mM), over a sodium concentration range of 0.1 mM to 107 mM and over a pH range of 5 to 9. The concentration of sodium ions in the activated sludge mixed liquor seemed to have very little effect on dinitrophenol toxicity. However, lack of sodium in the growth media resulted in a reduction of the dinitrophenol degradation rate by bacterial isolate from the activated sludge culture, which has been identified as Nocardia asteroides. Dinitrophenol inhibition was found to be strongly dependent on mixed liquor pH. The dinitrophenol degradation rate was highest in the pH range of 6.95 to 7.84; at pH 5.94 degradation of 75 mg/L dinitrophenol was significantly inhibited; at pH < 5.77, dinitrophenol degradation was completely inhibited after approximately 30% of the dinitrophenol was degraded.
Dairy performances of Pabna cows and its crossbreds with Sahiwal (SL) and Friesian (F) in the Baghabarighat dairying area of Bangladesh were evaluated. Four SL and three F sires were used for the crossbreeding. The exotic sire effect of individuals on their daughters were also evaluated in this study. It showed that the genetic group had a significant (p<0.05) effect on birth weight, age at first heat, calving interval, lactation length and lactation yield. The lowest birth weight (17.9 kg), longest age at first heat (39.2 m) and calving interval (16.3 m) shortest lactation length (199 d) and lowest lactation yield (728 L) were found in Pabna cows. The highest birth weight (22.5 kg). shortest age at first heat (25.5 m) and calving interval (13.7 m), longest lactation length (253 d) and highest lactation yield (1936 L) were found in the F crossbreds. Within the same breed, the effect of individual sire was significant (p<0.05) on age at first heat, lactation length and lactation yield. Individual sire effects of SL bulls differed significantly (p<0.05) but F sires had a non-significant (p>0.05) effect on calving interval in their progeny. The fat % and SNF % in milk and number of services required for conception did not differ (p>0.05) among inter-and intra- breed sire groups.
There are three major motives for M&A, financial synergy effect, operating & managerial synergy effect, and tax effect. The purpose of this study is to prove the operating & managerial synergy effect of M&A. To do this, we analyze the market-ripple effect of M&A, focusing on the increase in market power. Specifically we use cross-sectional data from 1985 to 1998 to show whether a market power of mergers is higher than that of a matched non-merging control group. we use time series data to show whether a market power of merger is higher than that of pre-merger. Also we use the event study using market model to show the stock price movement after mergers. The result is that although revenue increase after mergers, profit of the firms does not improve after mergers. Also there is sufficient evidence to say that there is a cumulative abnormal return for the firms after mergers.
The fatigue crack propagation rate has so far been measured by the effective stress intensity factor range Δ K/sub eff/. But no research has been done to study how much the crack opening ratio influences the expectation of the fatigue crack propagation. Therefore, this paper evaluates of the crack opening ratio on the fatigue crack propagation life by using the method of parameter sensitivity study. Summarizing the result ; ( 1 ) When the crack opening ratio U' is high, the effect of U' gets larger than any other except for the material factor m. But when U' is low, the effect is also diminished. Therefore, the selection of the lowest value possible is desirable in the evaluation of life. (2) When the value of the material factor m is high, the effect of crack opening ratio U' is increased, at the same time the effect of the other parameters also increased wholly. The effect of material factor m itself on life is high, but in case the material factor m is high, that the effect of each parameter on life get higher is unique. In designing, better attention to the material selection should be drawn. (3) In case the stress ratio R gets smaller, the effect of crack opening ratio U' is unchangeable. But the effect of R itself remarkably decreases, and the effect of material factor m somewhat decreases.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of skill and distance factors on CoP (Center of pressure) and CoM (Center of mass) during golf putting. Method: 38 golfers were participated in this study. 8 motion capture cameras (250 Hz) and 2 force plates (1,000 Hz) were used to collect CoP and CoM during 2 m and 3 m of distance golf putting. To identify main effect and interaction effect, it was performed Two-Way ANOVA at a significant level of a .05. Results: In the novice group, CoP distance was significantly difference in the A/P direction and main effect between skill level and distance. Both groups indicated that CoP distance was significantly different and main effect between skill level and distance in the M/L direction. Finally, both groups showed that CoM was significantly different and main effect between skill level and distance in the M/L direction. Conclusion: Therefore, novice golfers are expected to be able to perform more accurate and proper putting exercise through the practice of minimizing the center of mass(CoM) and center of pressure (CoP) in the M/L direction, which is the pendulum movement of the putter head.
