  • The chromosomes of two similar lymnaeid snail species, Austropeplea ollula from Korea and "Lymnaea"sp. introduced to Australia, were karyologically investigated by using an air-dry method. The diploid chromosome number found in A. ollula was 32, and that of "Lymnaea" sp. was 30. The mitotic chromosome complements of A. ollula were 5 metacentric, 9 submetacentric, and 2 subtelocentric pairs. "Lymnaea" sp. had 5 metacentric, 8 submetacentric, and 2 subtelocentric pairs. Austropeplea ollula is distinguishable from "Lymnaea" sp. by their chromosome numbers.

  • A field study of Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, was carried out in the eastern Chonnam area. The snail was distributed all over the place. Their major habitats were rice paddies (60.8%), followed by brooks (23.2%), irrigation canals (8.6%), and drains (5.6%). Other minor habitats included natural ponds (1.5%), lakes (0.4%), and rivers (0.1%). L. viridis was living in wet clay soil, occasionally entering water. The snails discharged egg masses when the temperature was $15{\sim}20^{\circ}C$, and the number of the snails was the highest late in October. At $9^{\circ}C$ the snails were not found on the mud: they were present deep in water or at the base of rice stubbles. These hibernation sites were discussed with the epidemiology of fascioliasis.

  • Freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae play an important role in the transmission of fascioliasis worldwide. In Vietnam, 2 common lymnaeid species, Lymnaea swinhoei and Lymnaea viridis, can be recognized on the basis of morphology, and a third species, Lymnaea sp., is known to exist. Recent studies have raised controversy about their role in transmission of Fasciola spp. because of confusion in identification of the snail hosts. The aim of this study is, therefore, to clarify the identities of lymnaeid snails in Vietnam by a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. The molecular analyses using the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA clearly showed that lymnaeids in Vietnam include 3 species, Austropeplea viridis (morphologically identified as L. viridis), Radix auricularia (morphologically identified as L. swinhoei) and Radix rubiginosa (morphologically identified as Lymnaea sp.). R. rubiginosa is a new record for Vietnam. Among them, only A. viridis was found to be infected with Fasciola spp. These results provide a new insight into lymnaeid snails in Vietnam. Identification of lymnaeid snails in Vietnam and their role in the liver fluke transmission should be further investigated.

  • In the present study, observations were made on the life-history of Lymnaea viridis under laboratory conditions, involving incubation period of the eggs and their hatching rate, shell length of the newly hatched snails, sexual maturity, size of the snails when the snail produced the first egg-mass, the number of eggs in each egg-mass, egg-laying, ovipostion, growth rate of the snails, and longevity of the snail. At temperatures between $19.8^{\circ}C$ to $22.5^{\circ}C$, incubation period of the eggs occupied 10~12 days, and after beginning of hatching, all young snails emerged completely from the egg-mass within 5 days. The hatching rate was 88%. The average shell length of the newly hatched snails was about 0.064cm. The rate of growth was extraordinarily rapid under good laboratory conditions. When two snails were reared in one culture vessel($20{\times}15{\times}5cm$) with blue-green algae at about $22^{\circ}C$, snail growth was optimal, taking 37 days to reach 1.2cm in shell length. Sexual maturity reached in about 19 days. The size of the snails at sexual maturity was $0.78{\pm}0.05cm$ in length and $0.47{\pm}0.04cm$ in width. The first egg-masses produced were $0.59{\pm}0.22cm$ in length and $0.34{\pm}0.08cm$ in width, and contained 7~38 eggs. The eggs are usually laid in water. The egg-laying was affected by food and temperature. Snails fed with blue-green algae at about $22^{\circ}C$ produced larger egg-masses than the snails fed with fish food at about $26^{\circ}C$. Under conditions of continuous activity and growth, the maximum expectation of life appears to be 109~350(mean 230) days. And the shell length of snails at death were 1.39~1.64cm.

  • In the present study, the effects of 4 agricultural chemicals commonly used in this conuntry were experimentally assessed on Lymnaea viridis the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, which in non-target organism of these chemicals. The major habitat of the snail is rice paddies in Korea and many agricultural chemicals are used for weed, fungi or insect control in rice paddies and there is a general concern that certain levels of these chemicals could reach the aquatic ecosystem and possible alter the snail life. Agricultural chemicals used in this study included two herbicides, an insecticide and a fungicide. The tenth generation of laboratory reared snails were selected and exposed to the varying concentrations(0-100 ppm) of these chemicals. As concentrations and time of exposure increase, the per cent mortality increases(p<0.01). $LC_{50}$(lethal concentration for 50% mortality) values of these chemicals on snail after 96-hour exposure were variable; iprobenfos showed the highest acute toxicity(12.6 ppm), while carbofuran showed the lowest acute toxicity(74.5ppm). Sublethal concentrations of chemicals after 96-hour exposure were also variable ; bentazone showed the highest chronic toxicity(0.81ppm), while carbofuran showed the lowest chronic toxicity(5.04 ppm).

  • The studies on the liver fluke of Korea have been reviewed. The fluke is Fasciola hepatica. Its intermediate host is Lymnaea biridis, whose principal habitats are rice paddies. The first fascioliasis of Korean native(beef) cattle was reported in 1915. Bovine fascioliasis is present throughout the conuntry, including north Korea, with the average prevalence of 30%. The prevalence of the disease is about the same in dairy cattle, which have been imported from other countries since 1960s. The disease was also found in Korea in other species of animals such as sheep, goats, deer of zoo and farms, and guinea pigs of a laboratory. Human fascioliasis was reported ; 35 cases by fecal examination and 11 by both parasitology and pathology. Of the latter 11 cases, 5 were ectopic parasitism. Economic loss due to the reduced carcass weight and milk production, and liver condemnation was great. Almost all flukicides developed in other countries are commercially available in Korea.

  • Field investigations were made in 1991 and 1992 in Kwangju and the western and central Chonnam area to determine the distribution of Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, and to study their life history during the different seasons. It had a wide distribution, existing all over the places, and the principal habitats of the snail were rice paddies. The life cycle was determined by making frequent visits to a series of habitats. The snsils began to produce egg masses in April, and egg production was the highest in May and June. Egg laying was continued but decreased in summer. There was sudden decrease in egg production in October when the temperature was below 2$0^{\circ}C$. The number of snails in July. Under the unfavourble conditions the snail either crawle up on the snail to aestivation. At low temperature below 8$^{\circ}C$ the snails hibernated inthe mud of the habitat. It was found in some habitats thao the snails were loving together with L. auricularia and Physa s pp. which indicates the neccessity of differentiation among them.

  • Fasciola hepatica eggs were obtained from the bile of infected cattle at a local abattoir. Metacercariae(MC) were produced using Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of the parasite. They were stored in distilled water at refrigerator($3{\sim}5^{\circ}C$) and at room temperature($22{\sim}27^{\circ}C$). The viability and infectivity of the MC were determined at monthly intervals for 12 months. The viability was determined by both microscope and excystation, and the infectivity by infecting mice. The MC stored at room temperature had a high viability up until 60 days, and thereafter the viability declined rapidly ; at day 120, only 2.5% of the MC were excysted. Most of the MC stored at refrigerator retained the viability up until 90 days, and thereafter the viability declined slowly ; about half of them were viable at day 210 and 5% of them retained the viability until day 270. The survival rates of the MC determined by microscope were always higher than those determined by excystation(p<0.05). The infectivity of the MC wisely followed the viability at the two different storage temperatures. Most of the mice infected orally with the MC died within 3-9 weeks of acute fasciolosis.
