  • In vitro-grown axillary shot-tip meristems of Lycium chinense Mill. from cold-acclimated plant were successfully cryopreserved using a vitrification technique. After loading for 15 minutes with a mixture of 2.0 M glycerol and 0.4 M sucrose ($20^{\circ}C$), small segments (1-2 mm, 3-4 mm, and 5-6 mm) were cut from axilary buds and exposed to the cryoprotectant solution containing 30% glycerol, 15% ethylen glycol,15% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and 0.4 M sucrose at $0^{\circ}C$ for 30-120 minutes prior to direct plunge into liquid nitrogen (LN). After rapid thawing ($40^{\circ}C$), the segments were washed with MS medium containing 1.2 M sucrose for 0-35 minutes, and then transferred onto recovery-growth medium. The highest survival rate (about 90%) was obtained with cold-hardening treatment, and cryopreserved explants were successfully recovered to plantlets. No abnormal morphological changes were observed with the recovered plants after cryopreservation.

  • The growing condition and the point at issue were investigated for utilization as a fundamental data of the Boxthorn research in the growing farm household, which was chief producing district of Box-thorn in Chongyang, Chungmam province. The results were summarized as follow'; Lycium fruit wasproduced 445M/. in the 170.4ha. In practical cultivation, major numbers of decapitation were threetimes,, and planting distance was dense planting, and also amount of applied fertilizer was beyondbasic-fertilizer level and number of split application was abundant.Numbers of harvesting were six-ten times, and many labor was requiremented. The issues in cultivation were development of processing technique, supplement of varieties whichhave disease tolerance, superior quality and high yielding, improving of cultivation methods for laborsaving and magnification of demand.

  • Modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity, damping ratio, and natural frequency of three varieties of boxthorn (Lycium chinense Mill) (Cheongyang #2, Cheongyang gugija, and Cheongyang native) branches were analyzed. Modulus of elasticity and modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity of the boxthorn branch was determined using standard formula after simple beam bending and torsion test, respectively, using an universal testing machine. Damping ratio and natural frequency of branches were determined using a system consisted of an accelerometer, a PC equipped with A/D converter, and a software for data analysis. Relationship between the elastic modulus and branch diameter in overall varieties and branch types showed a good correlation (r -0.81). There was, however, no correlation between torsional rigidity and branch diameter. The internal damping results were highly variable and the overall range of the damping ratio of the boxthorn branch was 0.014-0.087, which indicated that the branch was a lightly damped structure. The natural frequency of the boxthorn branch was in the range of 89-363 rad/s for the overall varieties and branch types. A good correlation (r 0.82) existed between the natural frequency and branch diameter in overall varieties and branch type.

  • This experiment was conducted to breed the Boxthorn varieties with resistance to Anthracnose, good quality and high yielding potential in 1984 to 1986(3 years). The character of "Yu seong 1" with resistance to Anthracnose and "Yu seong 2"with good quality and high yielding potential are fellows;1, The plant type of "Yu seong 1" was semi-elect type but became to electtype after 60C" rediation and yield was decreased because of the number of flowers.2. The yield of "Yu seong 2" was the highest of all varieties.3. The quality(Extract and Betain contents) of "Yu seong 2" was the best ofall varieties and visible character was good. The results of this experinent showed that "Yu seong 1" should be promisinglines in south area because of resistance Anthracnose and "Yu seong 2" should bepromising lines in north area.hracnose and "Yu seong 2" should bepromising lines in north area.orth area.

  • Volatile components were extracted from leaves of two Boxthorn (Lycium chinense M.) cultivars by using simultaneous distillation and extraction, analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Seventy components were identified : 13 acids, 15 alcohols, 18 hydrocarbons, 13 carbonyls, three esters, three ionones, and five others. The principal volatile components (and their peak area percentage) were n-pentanol (11.2~30.2%), phytol (14.5~28.3%), hexadecanoic acid (13.5~17.1%) 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (1.5~4.2%), benzyl alcohol (1.9-4.8%), phenylacetaldehyde (1.8~3.2%), and octadecadienoic acid (1.7~10.7%). Fresh leaves showed much higher peak area than that of dried leaf in n-pentanol, n-hexanol, cis-2-penten-l-ol, cis-3-hexen-l-ol, benzyl alcohol, and $\beta$-phenylethyl alcohol, while dried leaves showed much higher content than that of fresh leaves in 9-hydroxytheaspran A, octadecanoic acid and octadecadienic acid.

  • The heavy metal removability of four kinds of tea was investigated in the various conditions: particle size of tea(10, 35. 70, 100 mesh), concentration of heavy metal(25, 50, 100ppm) and extraction temperature(30. 50, 70. 10$0^{\circ}C$). The removabilities by the tea solids were increased as the particle size decreased, concentration of heavy metal increased, and extracting temperature increased. Of the four kinds of tea Pb, Cd and Cu removability by Eucommia ulmoides Oliv tea was the highest. In addition, heavy metal removability by Schizandra chinensis Baillon tea was better than that of other tea as extraction temperature was increased.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of sucrose, boric acid, and calcium nitrate in optimum pH and relative humidity on pollen germination and pollen tube growth of boxthorn (Lycium chinense M.). Medium containing 100mg/L of $H_3BO_3$ showed maximum pollen germination and pollen tube elongation, 64.8% and $920{\mu}m$. Additionally supplied calcium nitrate to the medium lowered pollen germination rate and pollen tube elongation. Here we report the optimum conditions for the pollen germination and pollen tube development was observed at 10% sucrose, 1.0% agar, pH 6.0, and 100% relative humidity.
