An automatic optimization technique is used to estimate the optimal parameters of the hydrologic model, and different hydrologic response results can be provided depending on objective functions. In this study, the parameters of the event-based rainfall-runoff model were estimated using various objective functions, the reproducibility of the hydrograph according to the objective functions was evaluated, and appropriate objective functions were proposed. As the rainfall-runoff model, the storage function model(SFM), which is a lumped hydrologic model used for runoff simulation in the current Korean flood forecasting system, was selected. In order to evaluate the reproducibility of the hydrograph for each objective function, 9 rainfall events were selected for the Cheoncheon basin, which is the upstream basin of Yongdam Dam, and widely-used 7 objective functions were selected for parameter estimation of the SFM for each rainfall event. Then, the reproducibility of the simulated hydrograph using the optimal parameter sets based on the different objective functions was analyzed. As a result, RMSE, NSE, and RSR, which include the error square term in the objective function, showed the highest accuracy for all rainfall events except for Event 7. In addition, in the case of PBIAS and VE, which include an error term compared to the observed flow, it also showed relatively stable reproducibility of the hydrograph. However, in the case of MIA, which adjusts parameters sensitive to high flow and low flow simultaneously, the hydrograph reproducibility performance was found to be very low.
The Linear Regression Model to extend the monthly runoff data in the short-recorded river was proposed by the author in 1979. Here in this study generalization precedure is made to apply that model to any given river basin and to any given station. Lengthier monthly runoff data generated by this generalized model would be useful for water resources assessment and waterworks planning. The results are as follows. 1. This Linear Regression Model which is a transformed water-balance equation attempts to represent the physical properties of the parameters and the time and space varient system in catchment response lumpedly, qualitatively and deductively through the regression coefficients as component grey box, whereas deterministic model deals the foregoings distributedly, quantitatively and inductively through all the integrated processes in the catchment response. This Linear Regression Model would be termed "Statistically deterministic model". 2. Linear regression equations are obtained at four hydrostation in Geum-river basin. Significance test of equations is carried out according to the statistical criterion and shows "Highly" It is recognized th at the regression coefficients of each parameter vary regularly with catchment area increase. Those are: The larger the catchment area, the bigger the loss of precipitation due to interception and detention storage in crease. The larger the catchment area, the bigger the release of baseflow due to catchment slope decrease and storage capacity increase. The larger the catchment area, the bigger the loss of evapotranspiration due to more naked coverage and soil properties. These facts coincide well with hydrological commonsenses. 3. Generalized diagram of regression coefficients is made to follow those commonsenses. By this diagram, Linear Regression Model would be set up for a given river basin and for a given station (Fig.10).

In this study, flood runoff characteristics is analyzed according to subbasin divisions by physically based rainfall-runoff model and appropriate number of subbasin divisions is suggested for midsize test basins. The Clark method, a lumped model in HEC-HMS, and the ModClark method, a semi-distributed model are used to simulate rainfall-runoff processes on Andong-reservoir basin, Imha-reservoir basin, and Pyeongchang river basin. The test basins were divided into nine subdivision cases by equal-area subdivision method such as single basin, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 15 subbasins, and compared the simulated and observed values in terms of the peak flow and the peak time. The simulation results indicated that the peak flows tended to increase and the peak time shifted earlier as the number of subdivisions increased and this tendency weakened after the certain number of subdivisions. In this research, the specific number of subdivision was defined as the minimum number of subdivision considering both peak flow and peak time. Consequently, the minimum number of subdivisions is determined as 5 for Andong and Imha reservoir basins and 7 for Pyeongchang river basin.
In Korea, the methods of estimating groundwater recharge can categorized into two groups. One is baseflow separation method by means of groundurater recession curve, the other is water level fluctuation method by using the data from groundwater monitoring wells. Baseflow separation method is based on annual recharge and lumped concept, and water-table fluctuation method is largely dependent on monitoring wells rather than water budget in watershed. However, groundwater recharge rate shows the spatial-temporal variability due to climatic condition, land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, these methods have various limits to deal with these characteristics. For this purpose, the method of estimating daily recharge rate with spatial variability based on distributed rainfall-runoff model is suggested in this study. Instead of representative recharge rate of large watershed, the subdivided recharge rate with heterogeneous characteristics can be computed in daily base. The estimated daily recharge rate is an advanced quantity reflecting the heterogeneity of hydrogeology, climatic condition, land use as well as physical behaviour of water in soil layers. Therefore, the newly suggested method could be expected to enhance existing methods.

Recently, the use of radar rainfall data that can help tracking of the development and movement of rainfall's spatial distribution is drawing much attention in hydrology. The reliability of existing radar rainfall compared to gauge rainfall data on the ground has not yet been confirmed and so we have difficulties to apply the radar rainfall in hydrology. The radar rainfall for the applications in hydrology are adjusted merging method derived from gage. This study uses the Mean-Field Bias (MFB) and Statistical Objective Analysis (SOA) as correction methods to create adjusted grid-based radar rainfall data which can represent the temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall. This study used a storm event occurred in August 2010 for the adjustment of radar rainfall. In addition, the grid-based distributed rainfall-runoff model (Vflo), which enables more detailed examinations of spatial flux changes in the basin rather than the lumped hydrological models, has been applied to Gamcheon river basin which is a tributary of Nakdong River located in south-eastern part of the Korean peninsular and the basin area is $1005km^2$. The simulated runoff was compared with the observed runoff in an attempt to evaluate the usability of radar rainfall data and the reliability of the correction methods. The error range of peak discharge using each correction method was within 20 percent and the efficiency of the model was between 60 and 80 percent. In particular, the SOA method showed better results than MFB method. Therefore, the SOA method could be used for the adjustment of grid-based radar rainfall and the adjusted radar rainfall can be used as an input data of rainfall-runoff models.

A new mode synthesis method using Lagrange multipliers and substructure hybrid interface modes is presented. Substruture governing equations of motion are derived using Lagrange equations and the constraints of geometric compatibility between the substructures are treated with Lagrange multipliers. Fixed, free, and loaded interface modes can be employed for the modal bases of each substructure. In cases of the fixed and loaded interface modes, two successive modal transformation relations are used. Compared with the conventional mode synthesis methods, the suggested method does not construct the equations of motion of the coupled structure and the final characteristic equation becomes a polynomial. Only modal parameters of each substructure and geometric compatibility conditions are needed. The suggested method is applied to a simple lumped mass model and parametric study is performed.

The purpose of this study is to assess agricultural drought using modified SWSI(Surface Water Supply Index) in Ango and Anseo agricultural district. Precipitation, reservoir inflow and storage data were used for input data of modified SWSI. Precipitation data was obtained from KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) and reservoir storage data was obtained from KARICO(Korea Agricultural & Rural Infrastructure Corporation) and reservoir inflow data was simulated by SLURP(Simple LUmped Reservoir Parametric). SWSI based agricultural drought index was evaluated for the period of 1983 and 2001. As results, for the drought periods(July-1994, June-1995, May-2001) agricultural drought indices represented extremely drought states. The result was compared with PDSI and SWSI and checked the applicability of the suggested index in our agricultural drought situation.

Implemented since 2004, TPLC (Total Pollution Load Control) is the most powerful water-quality protection program. Recently, uncertainty of prediction using steady state model increased due to changing water environments, and necessity of a dynamic state model, especially the watershed model, gained importance. For application of watershed model on TPLC, it needs to be feasible to adjust the relationship (mass-balance) between discharged loads estimated by technical guidance, and arrived loads based on observed data at the watershed outlet. However, at HSPF, simulation is performed as a semi-distributed model (lumped model) in a sub-basin. Therefore, if the estimated discharged loads from individual pollution source is directly entered as the point source data into the RCHRES module (without delivery ratio), the pollutant load is not reduced properly until it reaches the outlet of the sub-basin. The hypothetic RCHRES generated using the HSPF BMP Reach Toolkit was applied to solve this problem (although this is not the original application of Reach Toolkit). It was observed that the impact of discharged load according to spatial distribution of pollution sources in a sub-basin, could be expressed by multi-segmentation of the hypothetical RCHRES. Thus, the discharged pollutant load could be adjusted easily by modification of the infiltration rate or characteristics of flow control devices.
In Korea, there have been various methods of estimating groundwater recharge which generally can be subdivided into three types: baseflow separation method by means of groundwater recession curve, water budget analysis based on lumped conceptual model in watershed, and water table fluctuation method (WTF) by using the data from groundwater monitoring wells. However, groundwater recharge rate shows the spatial-temporal variability due to climatic condition, land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, so these methods have various limits to deal with these characteristics. To overcome these limitations, we present a new method of estimating recharge based on water balance components from the SWAT-MODFLOW which is an integrated surface-ground water model. Groundwater levels in the interest area close to the stream have dynamics similar to stream flow, whereas levels further upslope respond to precipitation with a delay. As these behaviours are related to the physical process of recharge, it is needed to account for the time delay in aquifer recharge once the water exits the soil profile to represent these features. In SWAT, a single linear reservoir storage module with an exponential decay weighting function is used to compute the recharge from soil to aquifer on a given day. However, this module has some limitations expressing recharge variation when the delay time is too long and transient recharge trend does not match to the groundwater table time series, the multi-reservoir storage routing module which represents more realistic time delay through vadose zone is newly suggested in this study. In this module, the parameter related to the delay time should be optimized by checking the correlation between simulated recharge and observed groundwater levels. The final step of this procedure is to compare simulated groundwater table with observed one as well as to compare simulated watershed runoff with observed one. This method is applied to Mihocheon watershed in Korea for the purpose of testing the procedure of proper estimation of spatio-temporal groundwater recharge distribution. As the newly suggested method of estimating recharge has the advantages of effectiveness of watershed model as well as the accuracy of WTF method, the estimated daily recharge rate would be an advanced quantity reflecting the heterogeneity of hydrogeology, climatic condition, land use as well as physical behaviour of water in soil layers and aquifers.

Many construction projects adopt grouting technology to prevent the leakage of groundwater or to improve the shear strength of the ground. Recognition as a feasible field procedure dates back to 1925. Since then, developments and field use have increased rapidly. According to improvement of grout materials, theoretical study on grout penetration characteristics is demanded. Fluid of grout always tends to flow from higher hydraulic potential to lower one and the motion of grout is also a function of formation permeability. Viscosity of pout is changed by chemical action while grout moves through pores. Due to the increment of viscosity, permeability is decreased. Permeability is also reduced by grout particle deposits to the soil aggregates. In this paper, characteristics of new cement grout material that has been developed recently are studied: injectable volume of new grout material is tested in two different grain sizes of sands; and the method to calculate injectable volume of grout Is suggested with consideration of change in viscosity and clogging phenomena. The calculated values are compared with injection test results. Viscosity of new grout material is found to increase as an exponential function of time. And lumped parameter $\delta$ of new grout material to be used for assessing deposition characteristics is estimated by comparing deposit theory with injection test results considering different soil types and different injection pressures. Injection test results show that grout penetration rate is decreased by the increase of grout viscosity and clogging phenomena.
