The friction and lubrication characteristics of joint cartilage were investigated using the metatarso-phalangeal joint cartilage of rabbit against rotating stainless steel disk. Friction tests were conducted by dry and bovine serum lubricated sliding at room and body temperatures. For the dry sliding tests, low friction coefficient of 0.1-0.15 was observed at the early period of test, and then the friction coefficient increased as a test continued. With increasing applied load the early period of low friction lengthens. For the lubricated sliding tests, the coefficient of friction decreased as the applied load increased. And also the coefficient of friction decreased continuously to 0.07 as the test duration increases. These results can be interpreted that the squeeze or weeping lubrication mechanism dominates the friction and lubrication characteristics in the joint cartilage of rabbit.

Natural castor oil was chemically reconstructed to extend the carbon chains by means of iso-reaction so as to improve the rheological behavior, by way of increasing the viscosity index and decreasing the pour point. The rheological and tribological characteristics of the reconstructed castor oil were comparatively investigated with those of the natural castor oil and several other vegetable oils and a mineral oil. The friction and wear test results on a four-ball machine indicate that the chemically reconstructed castor oil has considerably improved rheological and tribological properties as compared with the natural castor oil. It shows a greatly increase viscosity index and largely decreased pour point, which makes it applicable to low temperature lubrication. The chemically reconstructed castor oil even shows better tribological behavior than pentaerythritol ester or di-iso-capryl sebacate. However, it is still needed to increase the oxidation stability of the reconstructed castor oil.

This paper reports on the dynamics and friction characteristics of piston skirt with consideration of mixed lubrication. Piston skirt is an important part of the engine that transforms fuel into mechanical energy. The durability and low friction characteristics are important recent issues in piston skirt design. In this paper, the piston skirt motion is analyzed with consideration of mixed lubrication and piston skirt tilting motion. The entire trajectory of piston motion is obtained by using transient numerical method. Also various parameter studies are performed for piston skirt design and the development of lower frictional engine.

This study presents a method for determining bearing stiffness and damping coefficients of air-lubricated slider bearing, and shows influences of air-bearing surface geometry(recess depth, crown an d pivot location) on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics. To derive the dynamic lubrication equation, the perturbation method is applied to the generalized lubrication equation which based on linearized Boltzmann equation. The generalized lubrication equation and the dynamic lubrication equation are converted to a control volume formulation, and then, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite difference method. The recess depth and crown of the slider show significantly influence on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics comparing with those of pivot location.

This paper reports on the friction characteristics of a piston ring pack with consideration of mixed lubrication. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow antral asperity contact model. The effect of operating condition, and design parameters on the MOFT, maximum friction force, and mean frictional power loss are investigated. Piston ring prick shows mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication characteristics. From the predicted results, it was fand that the ring tension and height of surface roughness have great influence on the frictional power losses in a ring pack. Especially, ring tension is a dominant factor for the reduction of friction loss and maintenance of oil film thickness.

In this study, numerical analysis was conducted to understand the flow characteristics of lubrication system in a manual transmission installed in a commercial vehicle. Also, the analysis was conducted with the purpose of improving the heat and lubricative condition of the transmission. Discharging flow rates on each oil hole outlet according to various engine rotating speed and the length of oil hole branch was calculated. In conclusion, as engine rotating speed is high and the length of oil hole branch is long, the discharging flow rate is high by virtue of the centrifugal force. In addition, this study proposed data for optimal design of lubrication system in manual transmission for a commercial vehicle.
The lubrication characteristics of line contacts between the vane and cam ring in an oil hydraulic vane pump with intravanes have been investigated. Variations of the radial acting force of a vane were calculated from previously measured results of dynamic internal pressures in four chambers surrounding a vane, and variations of the film thickness were estimated in both the rotational speed range from 500 to 1500 rpm and in the delivery pressure range from 1 to 14 MPa. The results indicate the variations of the radial acting force and film thickness. It is found that the regimes of lubrication in the vane tip contacts lover rigid-isoviscous to rigidvariable viscosities.

It is well known that reduction of friction loss due to the valve train system greatly affects on improvement of fuel economy in internal combustion engine. In order to investigate friction characteristics of valve train system we carried out friction force measurement using test rig developed by ourselves. From test results, we concluded that characteristics of lubrication and friction torque on the valve train system such as mixed and hydrodynamic was mainly governed the contact type between cam and tappet.

The frictional characteristics of natural rubber plates under various conditions including sliding speed, contacted ball size, and lubrication conditions were evaluated experimentally. The frictional force and the normal force were measured by a self-made tester pin and a load cell with strain gages. In the lubrication condition, the effect of sliding speed was not significant over tested speed range. But in the none-lubrication condition, according to increase the sliding speed, the friction coefficient was decreased. The coefficients of friction under various lubrication conditions were varied from 0.03 to 0.32 and under none-lubrication condition was varied from 2.54 to 4.74.

Surface texturing of tribological application is another attractive technology of friction reducing. Also, reduction of friction is therefore considered to be a necessary requirement for improved efficiency of machine. In this paper attempts to investigate the effect of density for micro-scale dimple pattern on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We demonstrated the lubrication mechanism for a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. It is found that friction coefficient is depended on the density of surface pattern. It was thus verified that micro-scale dimple could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions from based on friction map. Lubrication condition regime has an influence on the friction coefficient induced the density of micro dimple.
