  • Surface texturing of tribological application is another attractive technology of friction reducing. Also, reduction of friction is therefore considered to be a necessary requirement for improved efficiency of machine. In this paper attempts to investigate the effect of density for micro-scale dimple pattern on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We demonstrated the lubrication mechanism for a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. It is found that friction coefficient is depended on the density of surface pattern. It was thus verified that micro-scale dimple could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions from based on friction map. Lubrication condition regime has an influence on the friction coefficient induced the density of micro dimple.

  • The friction and lubrication characteristics of joint cartilage were investigated using the metatarso-phalangeal joint cartilage of rabbit against rotating stainless steel disk. Friction tests were conducted by dry and bovine serum lubricated sliding at room and body temperatures. For the dry sliding tests, low friction coefficient of 0.1-0.15 was observed at the early period of test, and then the friction coefficient increased as a test continued. With increasing applied load the early period of low friction lengthens. For the lubricated sliding tests, the coefficient of friction decreased as the applied load increased. And also the coefficient of friction decreased continuously to 0.07 as the test duration increases. These results can be interpreted that the squeeze or weeping lubrication mechanism dominates the friction and lubrication characteristics in the joint cartilage of rabbit.

  • phase lubrication can be used as an alterative lubrication method to overcome the demerits of liquid and solid lubrications. In this work, the tribological characteristics of metals are investigated under vapor phase lubrication. It was found that the friction coefficient and wear volume can be controlled efficiently by the amount of vapor phase lubricant delivered to the sliding interface. The friction coefficient could be reduced to about 0.1 under vapor lubrication. Also, depending on the amount of vapor lubrication delivered to the system, the width of the wear track could be varied between 50 to 250 Um. It is shown that vapor phase lubrication mechanism is very effective to control the friction and wear phenomena without the use of excessive oil.

  • Many lubricated systems experience boundary, lubrication condition during operation. However, the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication are not clearly understood. In this work the factors which affect the friction and wear between boundary lubricated metallic surfaces are investigated. Experiments were performed on atuminium, copper, and SM45C with bearing ball using a pin-on disk type tester. The experimental conditions were determined by Taguchi experimental method. From the experimental results, the major factors that influence the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication could be identified.

  • Friction for sheet metal forming affects improvement of deep drawing formability. The deep drawing is affected by many process variables, such as lubricant, blank shapes, shape radius and so on. Especially, lubrication is very important formability factor. In this study, in order to investigate fraction coefficient of sheet metal forming, we examined friction test about three conditions, such as non-lubrication, full lubrication and film lubrication. We measured friction coefficient according to pin load under the conditions like deep drawing die. Mean friction coefficient for film lubrication condition would be very useful value to improve drawability.

  • The use of low friction wear resistant coatings for machine components is rapidly increasing. These components may operate in any lubrication regime, and less frequently even unlubricated. When run unlubricated it is easy to see the beneficial effect of a low friction coating. However, it has frequently been shown that the coating may also be very beneficial under boundary and mixed lubrication conditions. The present digest briefly presents a few interesting aspects of the use of low friction coatings in lubricated contact illustrated by selected experimental results.

  • Surface texturing of tribological applications is an attractive technology of engineered surface. Therefore, reduction of friction is considered to be necessary for improved efficiency of machines. The current study investigated the potential of textured micro-scale grooves on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We discuss reducing friction due to the influence of sliding direction at surface pattern. We can indicate lubrication mechanism as a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for the lubrication condition. It was found that the friction coefficient was changed by the surface pattern and sliding direction, even when surface pattern was the same. It was thus verified that micro-scale grooves could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions. The lubrication regime influences the friction coefficient induced by the sliding direction of groove pattern. The friction coefficient depends on a combination of resistance force and hydrodynamic.
