Using emulsion lubricant whose cooling effect and incombustibility are good and which is economical, I investigated lubricative mechanism and the behavior of scattered particles in the elastic fluid lubrication region with the line contact between rollers and plates and the light interference system. The results of the study are as follows: (1) The flow in the squeeze oil film is considered as comparatively wide clearance and narrow one, and in the former case the effect of the distribution of particles and the velocity on the flow. In the latter case, emulsion particles stay in the clearance an the oil film changes with the decrease of the oil film thickness. (2) In the wide clearance the velocity difference of the flow O/W or W/O emulsion is inverse proportional to the particle size. In the narrow clearance the distribution of the remained drops is different from one another and the scattered particles change more easily in O/W type than in W/O type. (3) At the beginning of the EHL the stagnation region with slow flowing velocity exists and the behavior at the region is different depending on the particle size. (4) By observing the dischromatic light interference line, emulsion oil passing through EHL region and the crack behavior at the beginning of EHL were found.
It is currently well known that surface textures act as lubricant reservoirs, entrap wear debris, and hydrodynamic bearings, which can lead to certain increases in load-carrying capacities. Until recently, the vast majority of research has focused on parallel sliding machine components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, piston rings, etc. However, most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape in the sliding direction and their hydrodynamic pressure is mainly generated by the wedge action. Following the first part of the present study that investigates the effect of groove position on the lubrication performances of inclined slider bearings, this paper focuses on the effects of groove depths and film thicknesses. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are numerically analyzed. The results show that the film thickness and groove depth have a significant influence on the pressure distribution. The maximum pressure occurs at the groove depth where the vortex is found and, as the depth increases, the pressure decreases. There is also a groove depth to maximize the supporting load with the film thickness. The friction force acting on the slider decreases with deeper grooves. Therefore, properly designed groove depths, depending on the operating conditions, can improve the load-carrying capacity of inclined slider bearings as compared to the bearings without a groove.

Thermodynamic properties of R-32 are calculated and its refrigeration performance is evaluated for the purpose the feasibility study of replacing R-22 with R-32. (1) Refrigeration effect of R-32 is superior to that of R-22 because heat of evaporation of R 32 is about 50% higher than that of R-22. However, COP of R-32 system is 10-30% lower than that of R-22 system. It is mainly attributed to the vapor pressore of R-32 being about 62% higher than R-22. (2) Since the pressure ratio and the specific heat ratio of R-32 system is higher than those of R -22, compressor discharging temperature rises as high as to $130-150^{\circ}C$. It may cause mechanical failure of compressor due to the breakdown of lubricant. Compressor should be improved to lower the temperature if R-32 is to replace R-22. (3) Averaged two-phase heat transfer coefficient of R-32 is about 10-20% higher than that of R-22. It may assume better heat exchanger effectiveness but not guarantee the better COP of R-32 system than R-22. (4) The high vapor pressure is the first reason to drop R-32 out of the line of R-22 alternative refrigerant. So, refrigerant mixtures based on R-32 are recommended to adjust the vapor pressure first and keep superior volumetric capacity of R-32.

Background We conducted an experimental study to compare the effect of massage using topical agents (Kelo-cote or Contractubex) on scar formation by massaging the healed burn wound on the dorsal area of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods Four areas of second degree contact burn were made on the dorsal area of each of 15 SD rats, using a soldering iron 15 mm in diameter. After gross epithelialization in the defect, 15 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: the Kelo-cote group, Contractubex group, Vaseline group, and control group. Rats in three of the groups (all but the Control group) were massaged twice per day for 5 minutes each day, while those in the Control group were left unattended. For histologic analysis, we performed a biopsy and evaluated the thickness of scar tissue. Results In the Kelo-cote and Contractubex groups, scar tissue thicknesses showed a significant decrease, compared with the Vaseline and control groups. However, no significant differences were observed between the Kelo-cote and Contractubex groups. In the Vaseline group, scar tissue thicknesses showed a significant decrease, compared with the control groups. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that massage using a topical agent is helpful in the prevention of scar formation and that massage only with lubricant (no use of a topical agent) also has a considerable effect, although not as much as the use of a topical agent. Thus, we recommend massage with a topical agent on the post-burn scar as an effective method for decreasing the scar thickness.
Hydraulic reciprocating seal has been widely used to prevent fluid leakage in hydraulic systems. Also, hydraulic reciprocating seal plays a significant role to provide lubricant film at contacting interface to minimize tribological problems due to sliding with counter material. To predict lifetime of hydraulic reciprocating seal, quantitative understanding of wear characteristics with respect to operating conditions such as normal force and sliding speed is needed. In this work, effect of sliding speed on wear of polyurethane (PU) hydraulic reciprocating seal were experimentally investigated using a pin-on-disk tribo-tester. The wear characteristics of PU specimens were quantitatively determined by comparing the confocal microscope data before and after test. It was found that the wear rate of PU specimens decreased from $4.9{\times}10^{-11}mm^3$ to $1.1{\times}10^{-11}mm^3/Nm$ as sliding speed increased from 120 mm/s to 940 mm/s. Also, it was observed that the friction decreased slightly as the sliding speed increased. Improvement of lubrication state with increasing sliding speed was likely to be responsible for this enhanced friction and wear characteristics. This result also suggests that decrease in sliding distance between PU elastomer and counter materials at lower sliding speed is preferred. Furthermore, the quantitative assessment of wear characteristics of PU specimen may be useful in prediction of lifetime of PU hydraulic reciprocating seal if the allowed degree of wear for failure of the seal is provided.

Hemispherical dimples with diameter, ø=$60{\mu}m$ and depth, d= $30{\mu}m$ were created on the metal and ceramics surfaces using INYA 10 watt Laser of 1064 nm wavelength. This study reports the influence of dimple pitch on friction and wear behavior rather than dimple size, depth and density. LST was performed on the specimens with dimple pitch and density in the range of 80 to-$200{\mu}m$ and 44 to 7 %, respectively. Surface topography was analyzed by using roughness measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy. Friction and wear characteristics were analyzed on textured surfaces at lubricating environment to observe the effect of surface texturing on reduction of friction and wear. Reduction on coefficient of friction was achieved by more than 70% due to the dual behavior of dimples as wear (debris) traps and lubricant reservoirs. Wear reduced significantly for the textured surface as compared to the polished surface. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the textured specimens reduced with increasing load and speed which may be attributed to the transition of lubrication regime.

The effect of transesterification on the rheological properties in the melt reactive blending of poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) with poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) has been studied. The melt viscosity depression in PBT was found in PBT/PET blends due to the intrinsic low melt viscosity of PET compared to PBT. In addition, the thermal degradation in the melt blending and transesterification between two polyesters were considered as other factors fer the lowering of the melt viscosity in the blends. In the PBT/PET blends, calcium stearate was less effective than in PBT as a lubricant, however it accelerated both the thermal degradation and transesterification during melt blending. As a result, further melt viscosity drop was obtained in the reactive melt blending of PBT/PET.

An air-bearing stage uses externally pressurized air as the lubricant between the stage and the rail. The supporting force generated by the supplied air makes the stage rise and move smoothly with extremely low friction. Mechanical contacts rarely happen, the bearing surfaces do not produce wear particles, and dust is not generated. It also has the advantage of having low energy loss and high precision. Because of its advantages, an air-bearing stage is used in several types of machines that require high precision. In this article, the effect of the pocket depth on the hammering phenomena of the air bearing is studied. An analysis program is developed to calculate the dynamic behavior of the stage by solving the Reynolds equation between the stage and the guideway and the equations of motion on the stage. The acceleration, constant movement, and deceleration are applied to the stage. The stage is modeled as a five-degree-of-freedom system. In the course of the dynamic behavior, the hammering phenomena occur under some special conditions. The deeper the pocket, the more unstable the behavior of the stage, and air hammering occurs when it exceeds a certain depth. In addition, the higher the supply pressure, the more unstable the behavior of the stage. However, hammering occurs even with a shallow pocket depth. Other conditions that affect the hammering phenomena are calculated and discussed.
The worldwide focus on reducing the emissions, fuel and lubricant consumption in T-GDI engines is leading engineers to consider the crankcase ventilation and oil mist separation system as an important means of control. In today's passenger cars, the oil mist separation systems mainly use the inertia effect (e.g. labyrinth, cyclone etc.). Therefore, this study has investigated high efficiency cylinder head-integrated oil-mist separator by using a compact multi-impactor type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. For this purpose, engine dynamometer testing with oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and 3D two-phase flow simulation have been performed for various engine operating conditions. Tests with an actual engine on a dynamometer showed oil aerosol particle size distributions varied depending on operating conditions. For instance, high rpm and load increases bot only blow-by gases but the amount of small size oil droplets. Submicron-sized particles (less than 0.5 ㎛) were also observed. It is also found that the impactor type separator is able to separate nearly no droplets of diameter lower than 3 ㎛. CFD results showed that the complex aerodynamics processes that lead to strong impingement and break-up can strip out large droplets and generate more small size droplets.

This paper introduces the effect of grease on the degradation characteristics of bearings used as key components of packaging equipment and automation systems. Bearings parts are installed to fix and support the rotating body of the system, and performance degradation of the bearings has a great effect on the life of the system too. When bearings are used in various devices and systems, the grease is applied to reduce friction and improve fatigue life. Determining the type of lubricant (grease) is important because it has a great influence on the operating environment and lifespan and ensures long lifespan of systems and facilities. However, studies that simultaneously compared and analyzed the change in mechanical degradation characteristics and the comparison of chemical degradation characteristics according to grease types under actual operating conditions are insufficient. In this paper, three types of small harmonic drive, high-load reducer, and low-load reducer grease used in power transmission joint modules are experimentally selected and finally injected into ball bearings with a load (19,500N) to improve bearing durability. Degradation characteristics were tested by attaching to test equipment. At this time, after the durability test under the same load conditions, the mechanical degradation characteristics, that is temperature, vibration according to the three greases types. In addition, the chemical degradation characteristics of the corresponding grease was compared to present the results of mutual correlation analysis.
