The aim of this research is to establish shoot regeneration system for 'Wonhwang' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia L.) using various concentrations of 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 mg/L in combination with benzylaminopurine (BA) 3, 5, 10 mg/L. Medium containing 4.4 g/L of Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with vitamins containing 8 g/L of plant agar and 30 g/L of sucrose with NAA 0.05 mg/L and BA 3 mg/L showed 13.3% of shoot regeneration rate. 'Wonhwang' showed no root growth on existing rooting media of P. pyrifolia cv. Niitaka, 'Whang-keumbae' and 'Bae Yun No. 3'. We evaluated the effect of concentration and kinds of plant growth regulators and carbon source to establish efficient rooting condition for 'Wonhwang' pear. In the result of using various concentrations of NAA 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L in combination with indolebutyric acid (IBA) 3, 5, 10 mg/L, rooting rate of 24% was observed using 1/4 Linsmaier and Skoog (LS) medium supplemented with 7.5 g/L glucose as carbon source and IBA 1.0 mg/L with NAA 1.0 mg/L.
Six demographic parameters including life span (LS), maturation time (MT), net reproduction rate (Ro), mean generation length (G), innate capacity for increase $(r_m)$ and finite rate of increase $(\gamma)$ were estimated in the rotifer (Brachionus rotundiformis) cultured at three salinities of 5, 20 and 34 PSU and under a constant temperature of $28^{\circ}C$. The maximum life spans at salinities of 5, 20 and 34 PSU were 17, 12 and 13 days, respectively. The shortest maturation time (24 hr) was recorded at 5 PSU, and the rotifer at 20 PSU showed a most delayed maturation (192 hr). The maximum reproduction rate was 42 offspring per female in rotifer cultured at 5 PSU, while the longest generation length (8 days) was observed at 20 PSU. Maximum and minimum values of $r_m$ (1.56 and 0.46 individual per day) and $(\gamma)$ (6.67 and 1.70 individuals per day) were calculated at 5 and 34 PSU, respectively. Salinity also showed strong effect on correlation of the demographic traits examined. ANOVA revealed significant differences (P<0.05) between demographic parameters of the rotifer at the three salinity condition. Considering the higher values of life span, innate capacity and finite rate of increase, and shortest maturation time at 5 PSU, the rotifer we examined had a higher reproductive potential and longer life span at 5 PSU rather than at 20 or 34 PSU.
The purposes of this study were to compare the soft tissue changes following hard tissue change after surgery between the one jaw and two-jaw surgery in skeletal class III patients and to get the reference of the incisal inclination at presurgical orthodontics. For this study 24 patients for the two-jaw surgery group and 18 patients for one jaw surgery group were selected. Lateral cephalograms were taken at pretreatment, after presurgical orthodontic treatment, immediately after surgical treatment and at least 6 months after surgery. They were traced and analyzed on skeletodental structure and soft tissue. The results were as follows: 1. After surgery, maxilla, maxillary incisors and upper lip were moved anteriorly and superiorly in two-jaw surgery group. Mandible and mandibular incisors were moved posteriorly and superiorly, and thickness of lower lip was increased in both group but there were no statistically significant difference. Anterior facial height was more decreased in two-jaw surgery group (p<0.05). At least 6 months after surgery, by the postorthodontic treatment, maxillary incisors were moved labially 1.44mm, mandible and mandiibular incisors were moved lingually 1.43mrn, 1.26mm respectively in one jaw surgery group. But there was no statistically significant changes of hard tissue in two :jaw surgery group. 2. The correlation coefficients of maxillary hard and soft tissue horizontal changes were high in two jaw surgery group and the ratios for soft tissue to A point were 19% at Sri, 80% at SLS, 82% at LS. The ratios for soft tissue to B point were 92% at LI, 104% at ILS in one jaw surgery group, 89% at LI, 101% at ILS in two-jaw surgery group. 3. The correlation coefficients and change ratios of mandibular incisors and LL HS on lower lip horizontal changes were 0 0.89 and 75%, 85% in one jaw surgery group, 0.93, 0.90 and 76%, 87% in two-jaw surgery group. The correlation coefficients of maxillary incisors and Sn, SLS and LS on upper lip horizontal changes were 072, 0.76 and 0.75 in two jaw surgery group and ratios of changes were 57%, 58% and 59%. 4. The regression equations between skeletal horizontal discrepancy and incisal inclinaton were taken in one jaw surgery group. Those were FMIA=57.48-2.17ANB, U1-SN=-75.02+2.17SNB and $R^2$ were 0.63, 063 respectively. So if there is skeletal horizontal discrepancy by mandibular prognathism in one jaw surgery case, we consider attaining more labial inclination of maxillary incisors than normal and more lingual inclination of mandibular incisors than normal. But correlation coefficient of the regression equations in two jaw surgery group was low, so, that equation was not reliable.

This study aimed to improve the physiological activity of onion juice via lactic acid bacterial fermentation. Seven types of lactic acid bacteria were used for the fermentation of onion juice. The pH and sugar content of the onion juice decreased, while its titratable acidity increased after lactic acid bacteria fermentation, and the cell count of lactic acid bacteria was 7.31-10.40 log CFU/mL. The total free sugar content decreased, while the total organic acid content increased in the fermented onion juice. Quercetin content of the fermented juice was 0.13-0.53 mg/kg. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents increased after fermentation. Additionally, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical cation scavenging activities were increased by fermentation. Overall, lactic acid bacteria fermentation of onion juice enhanced its physiological activity. Based on these findings, Bifidobacterium breve KCTC 3441 was selected as the onion juice fermentation strain.
Chemical assessment of soil pollution with heavy metals was made by analyzing the changes in pH, ionic strength, cationic concentration and chemical species in the soil solution. Saturated pastes of the unpolluted soils were made by adding solutions containing Cu or Cd and the final Cu or Cd concentrations were in the range of 0 to 400 mg/kg. After equilibrating for 24 hours at $25^{\circ}C$, the soil solution was extracted from the saturated pastes by the vacuum extraction method and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, Cu, Cd, cations and inorganic ligands. Chemical species in soil solution were calculated by the GEOCHEM-PC program employing the input variables of pH, ionic strength(${\mu}$), molar concentrations of cations and ligands. Increasing Cu or Cd additions lowered pH of the soil solution but increased concentrations of Ca, Mg and K resulting in increases of ${\mu}$ of the soil solution. Effects of Cu on lowering pH and increasing ${\mu}$ were greater than those of Cd. Concentrations of Cu or Cd in soil solution were relatively very low as compared to those of additions, but increased linearly with increasing additions representing that concentrations of Cu were higher than those of Cd. At 400 mg/kg additions, concentrations of Cu were in the range of 0.51 to 11.70 mg/L but those of Cd were 34.4 to 88.5 mg/L. Major species of Ca, Mg and K were free ions and these species were equivalent to greater than 95 molar % of the existing respective molar concentrations. These cationic species were not changed by Cu or Cd additions. Major species of Cu in lower pH soils such as SiCL and SL were free $Cu^{2+}$ (>95 molar %), but those in LS having a higher pH were free $Cu^{2-}$ and Cu-hydroxide complex. At 100 mg Cu/kg treatment, $Cu^{2+}$ and Cu-hydroxide complex were equivalent to 73 and 22.4 molar %, respectively. These respective percentages were decreased and increased correspondingly with increasing Cu treatments. Major species of Cd in soil solution were free $Cd^{2+}$ and Cd-chloride complex, representing 79 to 85 molar % for $Cd^{2+}$ and 13 to 20% for Cd-chloride complex at 10 mg Cd/kg treatment. With increasing Cd additions to 400 mg/kg, $Cd^{2+}$ species decreased to $40{\sim}47%$ but Cd-chloride complexes increased to $53{\sim}60$ molar %. These results demonstrated that soil contamination with heavy metals caused an adverse effect on the plant nutritional aspects of soil solution by lowering pH, increasing cations temporarily, and increasing free metal concentrations and species enough to be phytotoxic.
The objective of this study was to develop models to predict freshness factors (total viable counts (TVC), pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), trimethylamine (TMA), and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values) and the storage period in beef using a visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic technique. A total of 216 beef spectra were collected during the storage period from 0 to 14 d at a $10^{\circ}C$ storage. A spectrophotometer was used to measure reflectance spectra from beef samples, and beef freshness spectra were divided into a calibration set and a validation set. Multi-linear regression (MLR) models using the stepwise method were developed to predict the factors. The MLR results showed that beef freshness had a good correlation between the predicted and measured factors using the selected wavelength. The correlation of determination ($r^2$), standard error of prediction (SEP), and ratio of standard deviation to SEP (RPD) of the prediction set for TVC was 0.74, 0.64, and 2.75 Log CFU/$cm^2$, respectively. The $r^2$, SEP, and RPD values for pH were 0.43, 0.10, and 1.10; those for VBN were 0.73, 1.45, and 2.00 mg%; those for TMA were 0.70, 0.19, and 2.58 mg%; those for TBA values were 0.73, 0.13, and 2.77 mg MA/kg; and those for storage period were 0.77, 1.94, and 2.53 d, respectively. The results indicate that visible and NIR spectroscopy can predict beef freshness during storage.

The yield, viability and continuous culture of isolated Italian ryegrass protoplasts were investigated. The effects of cold treatment (4^{\circ}C.$) for 7 days and basic LS medium supplemented with 5mg/l $AgNO_3$ showed effectively on embryogenic callus induction and regeneration responses of immature and mature embryos or young inflorescences subcultured every 4 weeks on basic medium. The optimum combinations of growth regulator on the regeneration responses was 0.2mg/l BAP and 2mg/l 2, 4-D. Calli induced inflorescences were suspended in its liquid medium for 5 days before enzyme treatment. Maximum protoplast yield and viability were obtained after digestion in enzyme solution contained 4% cellulase R10. 2% macerozyme and 2% pectinase in 0.6M mannitol. Cell division and microcalli development were observed in isolated protoplasts cultured in agarose culture of KM8P medium.

The harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation by increasing sun exposure are making people use sunscreens casually. To keep pace with this trend, many researches about mixing different ingredients or extracting effective ingredients from natural materials are conducted by cosmetics industry. In the present study, we evaluated the UV blocking effect of the sunscreen containing Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract. 10 volunteers were measured by minimal erythema dose (MED) and sun protection factor (SPF) of each product. The SPF results were $34.52{\pm}2.13$ and $32.67{\pm}1.44$ in the sunscreen containing Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract and that of not containing the substance, respectively. Although the difference of SPF between two products was statistically not significant, it is thought to be meaningful in evaluating clinical effects of the sunscreen using natural substance to humans without any adverse reaction.
Objectives: The purpose of this experiment is to understand the phosphorus removal ratio effects of iron plates per unit of surface area through the iron electrolysis system, which consists of an anoxic basin, aerobic basin, and iron precipitation apparatus. Methods: Iron electrolysis, which uses an iron precipitation reactor in anoxic and oxic basins, consisted of iron plates with total areas of 400 $cm^2$, 300 $cm^2$ and 200 $cm^2$ respectively. The FNR process was operated with a hydraulic retention time and a sludge retention time of 12 hours and three days, respectively. Wastewater used in the experiments was prepared by dissolving $KH_2PO_4$ in influent water. Results: The iron plates 400 $cm^2$ (16.6 $mA/cm^2$), 300 $cm^2$ (13.3 $mA/cm^2$) and 200 $cm^2$ (7.3 $mA/cm^2$) in surface area in the phosphorus reactor had respective phosphorus of 2.4 mg/l, 2.7 mg/l and 3.2 mg/l in the effluent and phosphorus removal respective efficiencies of 90.3%, 89.1% and 87.1%. The effluent in the reactor, where the iron plate was not used, had relatively very low phosphorus removal efficiency showing phosphorus concentration of 15.3 mg/l and a phosphorus removal efficiency about 38.3%. Phosphorus removal per ferrous was 0.472 mgP/mgFe in the iron electrolysis system where the surface area of iron was low. Phosphorus pollution load per active surface area and the phosphorus removal efficiency had an interrelation of RE = -0.27LS + 89.0 (r = 0.85). Conclusion: With larger iron plate surface area, the elution of iron concentration and phosphorus removal efficiency was higher. The removal efficiency of phosphorus has decreased by increasing the initial phosphate concentration in the iron electrodes. This shows a tendency of decreasing phosphorus removal efficiency because of decreasing of iron deposition as the phosphorus pollution load per active surface area increases.

This study investigated the colors and mechanical properties of layered dental composites. Four nanocomposite resins (Aelite LS, Grandio, Tetric EvoCeram, Filtek Z350XT) and a silorane-based composite resin (P90) were used for overlying and underlying materials, respectively, with different thickness combinations. Colors, translucency parameter (TP), flexural and compressive properties were evaluated. All tested specimens had different color coordinates, although all were of A3 shade. Color coordinates and TP values of layered specimens better matched those of the corresponding overlying product as the thickness of the overlying product was increased. High TP values were related with high $b^*$ value differences between specimens (p<0.05). Both flexural strength and modulus, compressive strength and modulus of layered specimens with different thickness combinations were mostly lower than those of the corresponding overlying products, respectively, in their non-layered state.
