Background and Purpose. Objective measurements of hamstring muscle length are needed to quantify baseline limitations and to document the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Several indirect clinical tests for measuring hamstring muscle length are available, but influence of their test procedure is not well documented. The purpose of this study were 1) to describe hamstring muscle length as reflected by use of six tests(active straight leg raising(ASLR), passive straight leg raising(PSLR), passive straight leg raising with the lower back flat(PSLRB), active knee extension(AKE), passive knee extension(PKE), hip joint angle(HJA). 2) to examine the correlation among the tests. Subjects, Sixty subjects(30 men. 30 women) ranging in age from 18 to 25 years(mean 20.2 years) and with no limitation hamstring flexibility and no neurological and orthopedical problems. Methods. All subjects performed six tests. A inclinometer was used to determine the end point of range of motion. HJA was measured using an inclinometer placed over the sacrum. PSLRB were tested PSLR with the low back flat and the opposite thigh slightly flexed and support on pillows. Results, A mean ASLR value of 85.9 degrees, PSLR value of 99.9 degrees, PSLRB value of 109.8 degrees, AKE value of 77.2 degrees PKE value of 83.1 degrees and HJA value of 73.0 degrees were obtained for all subjects. A dependent t-test showed significant difference between the angles of ASLR and PSLR(p<0.001). There was a significant difference between the angles of PSLR and PSLRB(p<0.001). There was a significant difference between the angles of AKE and PKE(p<0.001). The highest correlation was between PSLR and PSLRB(r=0.915, p<0.001). All SLR tests were significants related(p<0.001), as well as AKE and PKE(p<0.001). The lowest correlation was between PKE and HJA(r=0.171. p>0.05). Conclusion and Discussion. The results indicated that the hip flexion angles for ASLR, PSLR and PSLRB were a difference, and the knee extension angles for AKE and PKE were a difference.
The purposes of this study were to compare pelvic tilt. range of motion(ROM) of hip rotation, and leg length difference before and after manipulation and to investigate correlation between changes of each variables after manipulation of sacroiliac pint in 31 low back pain patients(11 males, 20 females) with sacroiliac pint dysfunction. The sacroiliac pint of patients was manipulated on the side of anterior pelvic tilt, using the technique described by Stoddard(1962) and Greenmann (1996). I used this technique because it usually eliminated sacroiliac Pint dysfunction in one treatment session. SPSS for window computer system was used to analyze the data. Also t-test was performed for comparison of the variables before and after manipulation, and Pearson product-moment correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed for changes of each variables after manipulation. The result were as follows: 1. The pelvic tilt after manipulation was significantly decreased(mean=$2.79^{\circ}$) compared with the pelvic tilt before manipulation(p=.001). 2. The PROM of hip internal rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt after manipulation significantly decreased (mean = $1.88^{\circ}$) compared with hip internal rotation before manipulation (p=.008). The PROM of hip internal rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt after manipulation significantly increased(mean = $1.29^{\circ}$) compared with hip internal rotation before manipulation (p=.029). 3. The PROM of hip external rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt after manipulation significantly increased(mean=$2.42^{\circ}$) compared with the hip external rotation before manipulation(p=$2.42^{\circ}$) compared with the hip external rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt after manipulation significantly decreased(mean = $1.84^{\circ}$) compared with the hip external rotation before manipulation (p=.008). 4. Leg length difference after manipulation significantly decreased(mean=2.15 mm) compared with leg length difference before manipulation (p=.008). Regression analysis revealed that a fair correlation was found between change in leg length difference and change in anterior pelvic tilt after manipulation(p=.009). 5. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to assess differences of the variables after manipulation. A fair correlation was found between change in leg length difference and change in anterior pelvic tilt after manipulation(r=.462, p<.01). A fair correlation was found between change in anterior pelvic tilt and change in hip internal rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt(r=.397, p<.05) and between change in anterior pelvic tilt and change in hip external rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt(r=.516, p<.01). A fair correlation was found between change in posterior pelvic tilt and changes in hip internal rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt (r=.441, p<.05) and between change in posterior pelvic tilt and change in hip external rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt(r=.361, p<.05). A fair correlation was found between change in hip internal rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt and change in hip external rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt(r=.388, p<.05) and between change in hip internal rotation ipsilateral to posterior pelvic tilt and change in hip internal rotation ipsilateral to anterior pelvic tilt(r=.426. p<.05).

The objective of the study was to observe the difference of moving function of lower-limb in relation to the length 8t silouutte of tight skirt. Four types of tight skirts (2 lengths$\times$2 silhouettes) were made for the experiment. The surface E.M.S in four different locations of leg muscles (Rectos femoris, Semitendinosus, Tibalis anterior, Gastrocnemius) were recorded. The sensory test to decide how to be fatigued after longtime wearing of skirt were examined two times per a day. The fatigue sensory test was scored a Likert-type scale (1= no fatigue, 5=heavy fatigue). Data were analyzed by the repeated ANOVA ann Duncan's multiple range test with use of SAS Package. The main results of this study were as follows: 1. As a result of analysis of E.M.S., in case of walking on the floor there was significant difference in the moving function according to length of skirt and in case of stepping there was significant differnce in three ways (length silhouette, length, silhouette). 2. From the record of walking the step-length, stride-length, step-width were found affected by garments, but foot-angle was not affected. The moving function of slim type was lower than that of semi type and that of ankle-length skirt was lower than that of knee-length skirt. 3. The results of the sensory test agreed with that of E.M.G and Footprints.
A large interindividual variability and some abnormally kinematic patterns at the lower extremity were the main features of the gait in children with Down syndrome. The purposes of this study were to investigate the gait asymmetry and biomechanical difference between dominant leg and non dominant leg in children with Down syndrome. Seven boys with Down Syndrome(age: $120{\pm}0.9yrs$, weight $34.4{\pm}8.4kg$, leg length: $68.7{\pm}5.0cm$) participated in this study. A 10.0 m ${\times}$ 1.3 m walkway with a firm dark surface was built and used for data collection. Three-dimensional motion analyses were performed to obtain the joint angles and range of motions. The vertical ground reaction forces(%BW) and impulses($%BW{\cdot}s$) were measured by two force plates embedded in the walkway. Asymmetry indices between the legs were computed for all variables. After decision the dominant leg and the non dominant leg with max hip abduction angle, paired samples t-test was employed for selected kinematic and ground reaction force variables to analyze the differences between the dominant leg and the non dominant leg. The max hip abduction angle during the swing phase showed most asymmetry, while the knee flexion angle at initial contact showed most symmetry in walking and running. The dominant leg showed more excessive abduction of hip in the swing phase and more flat-footed contact than the non dominant leg. Vertical peak force in running showed more larger than those of in walking, however, vertical impulse showed more small than walking due to decrease of support time. In conclusion, the foot of dominant leg contact more carefully than those of non dominant leg. And also, there are no significant difference between the dominant leg and the non dominant leg in kinematic variables and ground reaction force due to large interindividual variability.
Nerve conduction study (NCS) is an essential test for the diagnosis and follow-up of peripheral neuropathy. NCS can objectively quantify peripheral nerve function. NCS is affected by physiological factors such as height, age, body mass index, etc. Hence, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnosis Medicine (AANEM) is currently forming a Normal Data Task Force (NDTF) to present the normal value, but the number is significantly less. Currently, no research has been carried out on the correlation between nerve conduction speed and height and lower limb length in Koreans. Hence, this study sought to compare the nerve conduction velocity of the lower limbs according to the height and lower limb length. A total of 49 subjects were recruited. When the motor nerve conduction velocity and sensory nerve conduction velocity were compared according to the height and leg length, there was a statistically significant negative correlation of the peroneal and left tibial motor nerves with the height. Also, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed with the superficial peroneal sensory nerve and the sural nerve and the leg length. However, in this study, all the subject are in twentys age, whereas the NDTF is divided by age. Hence, additional studies involving subjects of various age groups are needed.
In this study, we analyzed the figure type and lower-body size of Shanghai and Hong Kong adult women in their early twenties using the data obtained from 3D whole body scanners. We also provided concrete information related to women's lower bodies, in terms of crotch width, crotch length, inseam, outseam, slope of waist, etc., among women in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The result may be useful to the Chinese apparel industry when designing trouser pants for adult women. According to the results of the factor analysis for categorizing the body shape of the lower half, 5 factors were obtained: obesity of the lower half factor, height of the lower half factor, length from waist to the crotch factor, factor related to legs, and shape of the abdomen factor. After performing a cluster analysis according to the factor analysis, three clusters were set: Cluster 1 was represented as the lower half growth type, which has a high value in height of the lower half factor and grows in the abdomen part. Cluster 2 was represented as thin legs type, which has a low value in most part compared to the length of leg bones and factors about legs that have high value. Cluster 3 was represented as the obesity type having a high value in the obesity of the lower half factor. Overall, thin legs type achieved a high rate in Shanghai adult women and obesity type received a high rate in adult women living in Hong Kong.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the recognition and satisfaction of the lower body shapes of male college students. The subjects in this study were 178 male college students. The results were as follows: 1. The degree of recognition and satisfaction of girth items in lower part of the body scored average. Subjects tended to be dissatisfied with their height. 2. The degree of satisfaction of waist girth and weight was influenced by the real body size than the degree of recognition. And abdomen girth, hip girth, ankle girth, leg length, hight, crotch length were affected by the degree of recognition than the real body size. 3. Subjects were more satisfied with standard lower body type than with lean and obese ones.
Background: The aim of this study was to assess the change in radiating leg pain after traffic accidents in patients with and without herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD) and improvement of radiating leg pain after traffic accidents. Methods: This was an retrospective study of 188 patients. Patients who had been admitted to the Hospital of Korean Medicine with the complaint of radiating leg pain after traffic accidents, and who had undergone lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging to determine the presence or absence of HIVD were observed from April to June 2016. We analyzed sex, age, length of admission, direction (to a single leg or to both legs) and locations, (medial, anterior, lateral or posterior side of the lower limb) of radiating leg pain, presence or absence of HIVD, and number, grade and position of HIVD. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were used to evaluate the impact of radiating leg pain on patients. Results: Radiating leg pain NRS score decreased significantly in both the HIVD group (from $6.12{\pm}2.39$ to $4.31{\pm}1.87$, p < 0.001) and the no HIVD group (from $5.76{\pm}1.64$ to $3.85{\pm}1.41$, p < 0.001). ODI score also decreased significantly in both groups (HIVD, from $44.67{\pm}17.38$ to $26.83{\pm}13.18$; no HIVD, from $39.24{\pm}15.58$ to $19.69{\pm}12$.; both p < 0.001). Conclusion: There was no significant change in radiating leg pain after traffic accidents in patients with and without HIVD and improvement of radiating leg pain after traffic accidents.

PURPOSE: This study examined the muscle activity while stepping over obstacles with various heights and widths to provide basic data for training and preventing falls. METHODS: Fifteen normal young adults (seven males and eight females) were recruited. The participants walked on a 5m walkway with six obstacles. The heights of obstacles were 0%, 10%, and 40% of the subject's leg length, and the width of the obstacles was 7cm and 14cm. The participants traversed the course twice per obstacle. The muscle activities of the soleus, tibialis anterior (TA), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) were measured using surface electromyography. A Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to examine the differences between obstacles. RESULTS: The muscle activities of the VL and the soleus of the stance leg and lead leg after crossing over the obstacles increased with increasing width, and there were significant differences in muscle activities between obstacle width (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of TA of the stance leg after crossing over the obstacles. A significant difference in muscle activities was observed according to the height of the obstacles with 14 cm (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of the VL, soleus of the leading leg, and TA of the stance leg CONCLUSION: The role of the VL and Soleus increased with increasing obstacle width, and the overall muscle activities of the lower extremities increased with increasing obstacle height. These results can be used to suggest a program to prevent falls.
This study aims at presenting the basic data related to the somatotype of elderly men at the point of Korea's entering into an aging society. Efforts were made to classify the lower-half somatotype of elderly men, with the application of the measurements of 261 elderly men of 60 years of age and over up to 70, which were available from the physique measurement survey project for Koreans. The number of analysis items was 31. The statistical treatment was made through SPSS win 12.0 program, and the analytical methods used were the basic statistics, factor analysis, and cluster analysis. The findings are as follows: Elderly men experienced the decreases in height and weight, in comparison with middle-aged ones, while they showed a flat shape at trunk, with more protruded waist and abdomen and with flat buttock. The analysis of the constituting factors for the lower-half body of elderly men resulted in the 6 items. The elements constituting the lower-half body of elderly men included the shape from waist to hip, the spread of hip and height of knee, the shape of leg, thigh size, the length of leg, and the volume of abdominal. The total accountability was 81.59 %. The cluster analysis for lower-half somatotype of elderly men resulted in the classification of three types. The above findings are intended to assist the designing of ready-made slacks with a high level of fitness for elderly men.
