  • In this paper, we proposed the novel hybrid guest-host liquid crystal display using the negative charged black particles in order to improve the low contrast ratio. We designed patterned electrode in order to switch the charged particle to the opposite electrode and improved the electro-optical characteristics by optimize the mixture of guest materials. In Comparison with the Heilmeier Guest-Host mode, proposed hybrid guest-host structure showed 80% reduction of transmittance in dark state, and the performance was examined by comparing contrast ratio.

  • This study examines the possibilities to improve natural dyestuff's (Pinux$^{TM}$) dyeability and colorfastness for C/R (Cotton/Rayon (40/60)) and W/T (Wool/Tencel (10/90)) knitted fabrics in cationizing and smectiting for pre-treatment, simultaneous-treatment and post-treatment process sequences; as well as various other treatment methods. The sample dyeability showed the strongest K/S value in the order of smectite (S) < cationization + smectite (C+S) < cationization (C); however, the K/S value showed a low level in the simultaneoustreatment method of smectite. Colorfastness to washing improved in the order of C < C+S < S, and after the smectite post-treatment process, C/R improved from Grade 1 to Grade 4 and W/T improved from Grade 1-2 to Grade 4. Colorfastness to perspiration generally improved in the same order as the colorfastness to washing and after the smectite post-treatment process C/R, W/T sample's acidic and alkaline colorfastness to perspiration improved greatly. As for the colorfastness to rubbing, the addition of smectite in the simultaneous-treatment and post-treatment processes resulted in improved wet-colorfastness; however, smectite showed less effect on the colorfastness to light compared to other colorfastness ratings.

  • Dyeing and fastness properties of a dyeable PP fiber were examined with four different types of disperse dyes. It was found that the dyed PP fiber could be cleared by soaping without using sodium hydrosulphite, and that the heat setting above $140^{\circ}C$ resulted in the melting of the PP fiber. The rates of dyeing and the extents of exhaustion of three primary E type dyes were different with each other, the apparent color strength did not increase with increasing dye concentration, and color fastness to washing was not satisfactory. In the cases of both high wash fastness and high light fastness dyes, the rates of dyeing were slow and the extents of exhaustion were very low. On the other hand, the dyeing rates of three primary S type dyes were similar and the build-up properties were good with good color fastnesses. It might be concluded that the best disperse dyes for the dyeable PP fiber were S type dyes.

  • Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber manufactured by an environmentally-friendly process. Since the fiber has more crystalline region compared to rayon, lyocell shows higher wet-strength than rayon. Although fibril generation of lyocell is lower than that of rayon because of the reason, the fibril generated during the wet process deteriorates the smooth look and soft touch of the fabric. The efficient way to remove the fibril yet retain the strength property was investigated in this work. In order to scour and remove the fibril from the fabric, cellulase enzymes were introduced and the traditional scouring was carried to be compared. Weight loss, dye-ability, and strength of treated fabric were measured after the treatments. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface of the fiber. Among the cellulases used in this work, Denimax 992L showed the best results for removal of fibril with low weight loss and tensile strength loss. The optimal conditions for the enzymatic treatment could be chosen depending on a characteristic for final purpose of the lyocell product.

  • red 1 and acid blue 92, anionic dyes, were removed from synthetic wastewater by the surfactant-modified clay minerals. Two different clays, such as Korean clay(M78) and Japanese clay(KJ) were treated with three different sulfactants, CTMA, DSDMA and TMSA. The surfactant-modified clay minerals such as M-1(CTMA), M-3(TMSA), KJ-1(CTMA) and KJ-3(TMSA), showed high removal efficiencies with dyes, while M-2(DSDMA) and KJ-2(DSDMA) could adsorb both dyes with relatively low efficiencies. Furthermore, almost 100% absorption of both dyes onto M-1(CTMA) and KJ-3(TMSA) revealed the possibility that these materials can be used for the removal of hazardous organic dyes from wastewater.

  • This paper presents a power management system of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) for ubiquitous sensor network (USN) applications. The charge pump with a luminance-controlled oscillator regulates the load impedance of the DSSC to track the maximum power point (MPP) under various light intensities. The low drop-out regulator with a hysteresis comparator supplies intermittent power pulses that are wide enough for USN to communicate with a host transponder even under dim light conditions. With MPP tracking, approximately 50% more power is harvested over a wide range of light intensity. The power management system fabricated using $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology works with DSSC to provide power pulses of $36{\mu}A$. The duration of pulses is almost constant around $80{\mu}s$ (6.5 nJ/pulse), while the pulse spacing is inversely proportional to the light intensity.

  • This study examined the dyeing characteristics and spectrum of cotton and silk by using dyeing solution extracted from aronia. The value $L^{\ast}$ which indicates the brightness of cotton regardless of mordant increases with increasing pH from pH 3.5 to pH 10.5. The color difference value(${\Delta}E$) of the cotton was generally high in pH 3.5 regardless of mordant existence. The silk showed the highest ${\Delta}E$ value in pH 3.5 dye solution as cotton did. On the other hand, the silk with mordant dyed showed the highest ${\Delta}E$ value in pH 7. Silk fabrics dyed with Aronia solution turns out red in pH 3.5, blue in pH 7 and yellow in pH 10.5. This is because of the amino acid, one of the silk ingredients, combines with a part of anthocyanin to show blue. As the result of the spectrum measurement, the maximum absorption wavelength of Aronia solution was increased in the order of pH 10.5, pH 3.5 and pH 7, regardless of extraction temperature and mordant. The measurement results of color fastness to washing and color fastness to light are generally low. Therefore, there is a need for further study to improve color fatness in the future.

  • [ $TiO_2$ ] contents in yarns can influence color yield so that dyeing quality of industrial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarns can be improved through the adjustment of $TiO_2$ contents. To evaluate the dyeing performance of color yield, the chips which included the different $TiO_2$ contents of 330,550, and 1,100 ppm respectively were used to produce the yarns of different $TiO_2$ content by a spin-draft machine. The physical and structural properties of the yarns were measured to investigate effect of the $TiO_2$ contents on them. Dye uptake and dyeing rate were also evaluated using a colorimeter to compare the yarns having different TiOz contents. The experimental results showed that there were no appreciable variation in physical and structural properties among the yarn samples and no difference were observed among the dyed fabric samples with regard to dyeing uptake and dyeing rate. However, the color yield of dyed fabrics increased as $TiO_2$ contents decreased in the yarns especially when the fabric samples were dyed to pale shade. The physical reasoning could be proposed on why the yarns having low $TiO_2$ contents appeared to have higher color yield after dyeing.
