  • In this paper the low cost sensorless control circuit for a PM synchronous motor without the mechanical rotor position sensors is presented. The sensorless control algorithm and position detection circuit for the sinusoidal current wave drive is more complex than that of the rectangular current wave drive. The proposed position sensing circuit is composed of an operational amplifier and several passive elements. The design procedures for getting the optimal parameters for the position sensing circuit are presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified through the simulations and experiments.

  • In switched reluctance motor(SRM) drive, it is necessary to synchronize the stator phase excitation with the rotor position. Therefore the rotor position information is an essential. Usually optical encoders or resolvers are used to provide the rotor position information. These sensors are expensive and are not suitable for high speed operation. In general, the accuracy of the switching angles is dependent upon the resolution of the encoder and the sampling period of the microprocessor. But the region of high speed, switching angles are fluctuated back and forth from the preset values, witch are cause by the sampling period of the microprocessor. Therefore, the low cost linear encoder suitable for the practical and stable SRM drive is proposed and the control algorithm to provide the switching signals using the simple digital logic circuit is also presented in this paper It is verified from the experiments that the proposed encoder and logic controller can be a powerful candidate for the practical low cost SRM drive.

  • In SRM drive, The accuracy of the switching angles is dependent upon the resolution of the encoder and the sampling period of the microprocessor. As the speed increased, the amount of the switching angle deviation from the preset values is increased by the sampling period. • The simple motor construction and low cost, fault tolerant power electronic drive has made the switched reluctance drive a strong contender for many applications. But the switched reluctance drive does exhibit higher levels of vibration and acoustic noise than that of most competing drives. The main source of vibration in the switched reluctance drive is generated by rapid change of radial magnetic force when phase current is extinguished during commutation action. In this paper, a hybrid excitation method is proposed to reduce vibration and acoustic noise of the switched reluctance drive. The hybrid excitation has 2-phase excitation by long dwell angle as well as conventional 1-phase excitation. The vibration and acoustic noise are reduced because the scheme reduces abrupt change of excitation level by distributed and balanced excitation.

  • This paper presents a voltage angle control strategy for surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives used in low-cost applications, wherein a current vector control is not employed. In the proposed method, the current vector control scheme, which requires high precision phase-current sensing units and a fast calculation capability of a motor drive controller, is replaced with the voltage angle controller. The proposed voltage angle controller calculates a d-axis voltage command to make the d-axis current zero by using a simple equation obtained from the voltage equation of SPMSM. The proposed method shows performance similar to the current vector controlled SPMSM drive during steady-states and its structure is very simple and thus it can be easily implemented with a low-cost microcontroller. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulations and experiments.

  • A simple construction, low cost, and a fault tolerant power electronic drive have made the switched reluctance drive a strong contender for many applications. But the switched reluctance drive exhibits higher levels of vibration and acoustic noise than most competing drives. The main source of vibration in the switched reluctance drive is generated by the rapid change of radial magnetic force when the phase current is extinguished during commutation. In this paper, some excitation methods are proposed to reduce the vibration and acoustic noise of the switched reluctance drive. The excitation strategies considered in this research are 1-phase, 2-phase and hybrid excitation methods. The 1-phase method is the conventional approach, while in the 2-phase method, the two phases are excited simultaneously. The hybrid excitation has 2-phase excitation using a long dwell angle as well as conventional 1-phase excitation. The vibration and acoustic noise are compared and tested. The suggested 2-phase and hybrid strategies reduce acoustic noise because the schemes reduce the abrupt change in excitation level by using distributed and balanced excitation.
