In order to independently examine the effects of long-chain saturated fatty acids and dietary cholesterol levels on plasma and hepatic cholesterol concentrations, six different diets were fed to male Mongolian gerbils (14 gerbils pes grcup) for an 8-week period. Purified diets contained 36% energy as fat (each saturated fatty acid tested comprised about 20% of the total fat energy) and 0.06% (w/w) cholesterol, corresponding to typical human consumption patterns in Western diets. Fat blends were formulated with natural fat sources. To determine the effects of different saturated fatty acids on plasma and liver cholesterol levels, four of the six diets contained constant levels of all nutrients except for the amounts of lauric acid (12 0), myristic acid (14 : 0), palmitic acid (16 0), and stearic acid (18 : 0). Dietary cholesterol effects were tested using 16 : 0-enriched diets containing 0, 0.006, and 0.06% (w/w) cholesterol. None of the plasma lipids were influenced by fatty acid treatment, including triglycerides, plasma total-, VLDL+LDL-, and HDL-cholesterol. However, hepatic esterified cholesterol concentrations were increased in the palmitic and stearic arid diet groups compared to the lauric and myristic acid diet group. The molar ratios of hepatic EC/FC were the highest in the palmitic acid diet (12.2 $\pm$0.6) and the lowest in the myristic acid diet (6.4$\pm$0.2). Dietary cholesterol significantly (p<0.001) increased the plasma total cholesterol which was due to the increase of both HDL-and VLDL+LDL-cholesterol. In the absence of dietary cholesterol and compared to other species, the gerbil exhibited a high molar ratio of hepatic EC/FC, which was funker elevated by dietary cholesterol feeding (0.06%). The results from this study indicate that hepatic cholesterol concentrations are sensitive to both low levels of dietary cholesterol and saturated fatty acid chain length and also, that plasma cholesterol concentrations are sensitive to low levels of dietary cholesterol .
This study investigated the effects of dietary soy protein and Ca on the lipid profiles of rats fed fat-enriched diets. Rats were divided into two groups and fed either a casein-low Ca (Exp I) or ISP-high Ca diet (Exp II) for a control period of 4 weeks. The two groups of rats were again subdivided into 4 groups and fed one of 4 experimental diets for another 4 weeks. The experimental diets consisted of 18% beef tallow and 1 % cholesterol, in which either 20 % casein or ISP with one of two levels of Ca, high (1 %) or low (0.1 %). The concentrations of total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride in serum, liver and feces were determined. At the end of the control period, the serum total lipid and cholesterol concentrations were low in the rats fed ISP-high Ca diet (67~76% and 83~86%). During the next 4 week period, these concentrations remained significantly lower in rats fed the diets containing ISP and high Ca compared with those on casein and low Ca diets (p < 0.05). Total lipid and cholesterol concentrations in feces were significantly higher in the ISP-high Ca dietary group at 4 weeks, and high in both high Ca groups at 8 weeks. This study demonstrates that both soy protein and Ca reduce serum and liver cholesterol, triglyceride, and total lipid in rats fed fat-enriched diet, and that they have an additive effect when combined.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of Opuntia ficus-indica complex (OF) on the lipid metabolism, bile acid in feces, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, aspatate aminotransferase (AST) activity, composition of urine and expression of cholesterol related mRNA in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Thirty two male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into non-diabetic control (NC), diabetic control (DC), diabetic OF of 2% (OF-2) and diabetic OF of 5% (OF-5), then each group was fed for 3 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were decreased significantly (p<0.05) in OF-5 group compared to DC, but high density lipoprotein (HDL) was not changed. AST and ALT were also reduced and bile acid excretion was improved. Composition of urine in OF-5 was almost same in NC. The expression of cholesterol $7{\alpha}$-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA-R), Low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) mRNA indicated that feeding OF have the effects of cholesterol decreation in plasma by synthesis of bile acid from cholesterol. These results provide experimental evidence about improved lipid metabolism of the OF feeding in the STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common causes of death in elderly Koreans, and HDL-cholesterol is known to have a pivotal role in protecting against CVD. This study was undertaken to study the relationships between plasma HDL-cholesterol levels and dietary, anthropometric, and biochemical factors in elderly Koreans. The 102 subjects, who were over 60 years old, were classified into two groups based on their plasma HDL-cholesterol levels: a risk group with plasma HDL-cholesterol < 40mg/dl in men or HDL-cholesterol < 50mg/d1 in women, and a control group with higher HDL-cholesterol levels. The subjects' mean intakes of energy, calcium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin E, and folate did not meet the Korean RDA for elderly people. Vitamin $B_2$ and folate intakes were significantly lower (p<0.l) in the risk group compared to the control group. The consumption of seaweed was significantly lower (p<0.05), and fish intake was 33% lower, in the risk group compared to the control group. Subjects in the risk group showed a higher BMI, waist/hip ratio, triceps skinfold thickness, and % body fat, compared to control subjects. Plasma triglyceride levels and values of the atherogenic index were significantly higher (p<0.00l) in risk group subjects. Significant negative correlations between HDL-cholesterol level and plasma triglyceride level (r= 0.37), and values of the atherogenic index (r=-0.74), were found. In summary, subjects with low levels of HDL-cholesterol were found to have relatively low intakes of vitamin B$_2$, folate, and seaweed, and higher levels of the CVD risk factors: body fat, plasma TG, and AI. These results suggest that plasma HDL-cholesterol levels can be modified by dietary, anthropometric, and hematological means.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the cholesterol-assimilation ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which were isolated from kimchi, a Korean traditional fermented cabbage. The isolated strain, using modified MRS medium, showed 30.5% cholesterol assimilation activity and was named Pediococcus acidilactici LRCC5307. Types and concentrations of bile were investigated for their effects on increasing the cholesterol assimilation ability of the LRCC5307 strain, a 74.5% decrease in cholesterol was observed when 0.2% bile salts were added. In addition, the manufacture of low-cholesterol butter using LRCC5307 was examined. After fermentation, LRCC5307 with butter showed 8.74 Log CFU/g viable cells, pH 5.43, and a 11% decrease in cholesterol. These results suggest that LRCC5307 could help in the production of healthier butter by decreasing cholesterol and including living LAB.
Ginseng may have antioxidant and pharmacologic effects similar to those of vitamin E. The interactive effect of ginseng and vitamin E was studied with respect to cholesterol metabolism and the antioxidant status. A ginseng supplement (0.1%, wt/wt) with comparable levels of vitamin E was provided with a high-cholesterol (1%, wt/wt) diet to rats for 5 weeks. The amount of vitamin E included in the ginseng-free and ginseng diets was either a low (low-E) or a normal (normal-E) level. The ginseng supplements significantly (p<0.05) altered the concentrations of plasma triglycerides in both the low-vitamin E group and normal-vitamin E group compared to the each ginseng-free group. The hepatic triglyceride and cholesterol content were not significantly (p>0.05) different between groups regardless of the vitamin E level in the diet. The hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity was significantly (p<0.05) lowered by the ginseng supplement in both the low-vitamin E and the normal-vitamin E groups compared to the ginseng-free group. The HMG-CoA reductase activity was also significantly (p<0.05) lowered with in increase of the dietary vitamin E in the ginseng-free group. The excretion of fecal neutral sterol was significantly (p<0.05) lower in the normal-E ginseng group than th low-E ginseng-free group. Neither dietary ginseng nor vitamin E significantly changed the hepatic antioxidant enzymes activity. This data indicates that ginseng supplements lower the concentration of plasma triglyceride and hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity regardless of eh dietary vitamin E level. This information may contribute to understanding the interactive effect of ginseng and vitamin E on cholesterol biosynthesis in high cholesterol-fed rats.
This study was designed to observe the effects of both control and atherogenic diets on the cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) in serum and liver of adult rats fed diets supplying two levels of dietary fat and two different sources of dietary protein in early life. For the first experimental period, the rats were assigned into the four diet groups: High fat, casein (HC); High fat, gluten (HG); Low fat, casein (LC): Low fat, gluten (LG). Each group was subdivided into control and atherogenic groups for the second experimental period. Cholesterol and TG were determined in serum and liver after 7 hr fasting. The body weight gain was greater in the rats of the casein groups than those of the gluten groups tut not influenced by the level of the dietary fat. The difference in body weight from the quality of dietary protein in the first period was not disappeared even after the second period. After the first period, higher serum cholesterol was observed in the rats fed either casein or high fat diets. With the second experimental diet, rats fed atherogenic diet showed higher serum cholesterol concentration but lower serum TG levels compared to those fed control diet, regardless the diets fed in the first period. Serum cholesterol level of the rats of both groups which had been fed high fat diets in early life was increased compared to those of the low fat diet groups. This effect was more pronounced with the atherogenic diet groups than control groups. However, no differences were found in serum cholesterol levels resulted from the different types of dietary protein fed in the first period. Serum TG concentration was not influenced by the quality of protein and level of fat in the diet but seemed to be mere affected by the amount of carbohyrates in the diet. Liver cholesterol per unit weight was greater in the gluten diet groups than in the casein groups but total cholesterol was higher in casein fed rats. There were no differences in liver TG among the groups.

Sense-line (SL), a dietary functional food, is our invention for weight loss. To evaluate such an effect of SL, we analyzed the plasma levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and weight changes after rats were fed on high fat diet with SL for 20 days. Plasma total cholesterol level and LDL-cholesterol level was decreased by 52% and 91.89% in 5% SL treated group and by 13% and 51.45% in 10% SL treated group, respectively. But HDL-cholesterol was not changed. In addition, the weight was significantly lower in SL group than in high-fat diet group (P<0.05). Our findings indicate that SL may contain compounds with actions, which can treat blood circulatory trouble as well as overweight.
Objectives: This study was carried out to establish the normal values of Serum Total Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol by age and sex for healthy adult and the frequency of dyslipidemia as a risk factor of coronary atherosclerosis. Methods: Total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol measured among 14,485 in general growing people (8,712 males and 5,773 females) aged 20 to 69 years and analyzed to use the auto-analyzer Hitach 7600 in enzyme method. Result: 1. The levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index were slightly positively correlated with age in both sexes. The mean values of serum lipid profiles were $190{\pm}32.9mg/dl$ in men and $181{\pm}32.8mg/dl$ in women for cholesterol, $50.1{\pm}11.4mg/dl$ in men and $54.5{\pm}12.0mg/dl$ in women for HDL-cholesterol, $3.9{\pm}1.0$ in men and $3.4{\pm}0.8$ in women for atherogenic index. 2. Mean values of total cholesterol and atherogenic index higher in men than in women at the age 20-40 years but significantly higher in women than in men at the age group 60 years.(p<0.001) 3. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) and low HDL-cholesterol(<35mg/dl) were increased with age in both sexs, significantly higher in women at the age group 60 years. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) and low HDL-cholesterol(<35mg/dl) in men and women was 37.5%, 25.3%, and 5.5%, 2.8%. Their requencies were higher in men than in women. Conclusion: Theses findings suggest that the mean concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in men and women vary with age. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) in men and women was about 31.4% and increased with age.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of age on the lipid metabolism in the rats fed different diets. In experiment A male Wistar rats of 5 weeks of age and of 32 weeks of age were divided into low fat diet groups and high fat-cholesterol groups. The rats were sacrificed 1 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks after experiment begins. Also after 4 weeks. the rats in low and high fat diet groups were tube-fed 500mg of choelsterol and were sacrified 3 days later. In experiment b, male Wistar rats of 4 weeks of age and of 6 months of age were divided into 2 groups of butter and cron oil groups. And then eachgroup were divided into 2 subgroups ; meal feeding and nibbling groups . Each diet was fed for 4 weeks. In experiment A, age of the rats and experimental diets did not affect the serum cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations were higher in rats fed high fat cholesterol diet than in those fed low-fat or high -fat diets, but age of the animals had no effect on liver lipid content. The weight and cholesterol content of epidymal fat pad, however were higher in adult rats than in young ones regardless of the diets fed. When the rats were challenged with 500mg cholesterol, the rates of increase in serum and hepatic cholesterol level were higher in adult rats compared to young rats regardless of the diets . On the other hand, the rate of increase of small intestinal cholesterol content was lower in adult rats than in young rats. In experiment B, serum cholesterol and triglyceride content were relatively higher in young rats than adult ones. Stored body lipid was higher in adult rats, as judged by epididymal fat pad weight and total carcass lipid. Meal frequency and the kinds of fat in the diet did not affect the serum choelstero concentration . The serum triglyceride levels. however, was higher in butter fed rats thancron oil fed ones. The cholesterol content of live rand epididymal fat pad was lower in butter fed groups than corn oil groups for both young and adult rats, but there was no difference in liver triglycerides livel.
