Sub-Kelvin cooling has been generally demanded for the fields of low temperature physics, such as physical property measurements, astronomical detection, and quantum computing. The refrigeration system with a small size can be appropriately introduced when the measurement system does not require a high cooling capacity at sub-Kelvin temperature. The dilution refrigerator which is a common method to reach sub-Kelvin, however, must possess a large 3He circulation equipment at room temperature. As alternatives, a sorption refrigerator and a magnetic refrigerator can be adopted for sub-Kelvin cooling. This paper describes those coolers which have been developed by various research groups. Furthermore, a cold-cycle dilution refrigerator of which the size of the 3He circulation system is minimized, is also introduced. Subsequently, a new concept of dilution refrigerator is proposed by our group. The suggested cooler can achieve sub-Kelvin temperature with a small size since it does not require any recuperator and turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Its architecture allows the compact configuration to reach sub-Kelvin temperature by integrating the sorption pump and the magnetic refrigerators. Therefore, it may be suitably utilized in the low temperature experiments requiring low cooling capacity.

In this paper, we have proposed a vapor cycle refrigeration system as a cooling system to provide cooling air to the aircraft external reconnaissance stores. In the proposed vapor cycle system, receiver which prevents refrigerant from subcooling was eliminated and thermal expansion valve was replaced with electronic expansion valve. The vapor cycle refrigeration system is aimed to provide cooling air to the reconnaissance stores which is added to the aircraft in the form of external store. The wide temperature range of ambient air from the flight conditions can decrease the cooling performance and can make the refrigeration system unstable in low ambient temperature. Performance characteristics of the vapor cycle refrigeration system has been experimented under air conditions which is derived from the flight envelope. From the experiments, the vapor cycle refrigeration system has been proved to provide enough cooling air to the reconnaissance equipment and to be stable under all the flight conditions.

We need refrigeration system which can maintain the freshness of agricultural products, because of being distance from a tiller to a consumer. Vacuum Pre-cooling system has an advantage in quality maintenance through vapid cooling down by using latent heat of evaporation of stored products. A number or thawing methods in current use have also several disadvantages in thawing time. discoloration mass loss caused by drying, capital costs and running cost. These damages are, it is claimed, either eliminated or improved by the vacuum thawing system. An experimental study on the pre-cooling for the bean sprouts and cabbage, and thawing for hairtail and croaker by the low temperature vacuum system were carried out. The cabbage cooling time with this Pre-cooling vacuum system took about 60 minutes to reach from $23.2^{circ}C to 4.5^{\circ}C$ at 5 mmHg abs. ($6.66\times10^{-4}$ MPa). The croaker thawing time with this low temperature vacuum thawing system took about 170 minutes to reach from $-10.3^{circ}C to -0.8^{\circ}C$ at 20 mmHg abs ($2.67\tiems10^{-3}$MPa). The vacuum Pre-cooling and thawing system have merits compared with present systems in their short intervals to cool down and to thaw without any quality losses.

Since the energy demand for refrigeration and air-conditioning has greatly increased all over the world, thermally activated refrigeration cycle has attracted much attention. This study carries out a performance analysis of a vapor compression cycle (VCC) driven by organic Rankine cycle (ORC) utilizing low-temperature heat source in the form of sensible heat. The ORC is assumed to produce minimum net work which is required to drive the VCC without generating an excess electricity. Effects of important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, condensing temperature, and evaporating temperature on the system variables such as mass flow ratio, net work production, and coefficient of performance (COP) are thoroughly investigated. The effect of choice of working fluid on COP is also considered. Results show that net work production and COP increase with increasing turbine inlet pressure or decreasing condensing temperature. Out of the five kinds of organic fluids considered $C_4H_{10}$ gives a relatively high COP in the range of low turbine inlet pressure.

Analysis is performed to determine the optimal lengths or cross-sectional areas of refrigerator-cooled current leads that can be applied to the conduction-cooled superconducting systems. The binary current lead is composed of the series combination of a normal metal at the upper(warm) part and a high $T_c$ superconductor(HTS) at the lower(cold) part. The heat conduction toward the cold end of HTS part constitutes a major refrigeration load. In addition, the joint between the parts should be cooled by a refrigerator in order to reduce the load at the low end and maintain the HTS part in a superconducting state. The sum of the work inputs required for the two refrigeration loads needs to be minimized for an optimal operation. In this design, three simple models that depict the refrigeration performance as functions of cooling temperature are developed based on some of the existing refrigerators. By solving one-dimensional conduction equation that take into account the temperature-dependent properties of the materials, the refrigeration works are numerically calculated for various values of the joint temperature and the sizes of two parts. The results show that for given size of HTS, there exist the optimal values for the joint temperature and the size of the normal metal. It is also found that the refrigeration work decreases as the length of HTS increases and that the optimal size of normal metal is quite independent of the size of HTS. For a given length of HTS, there is an optimal cross-sectional area and it increases as the length increases. The dependence of the optimal sizes on the refrigerator models employed are presented for 1kA leads.

The low temperature distribution of the refrigerated and frozen food has been increased gradually. Refrigeration industry is using R134a refrigerant, which GWP is 1300. R1234yf is an alternative refrigerant of R134a because GWP of R1234yf refrigerant is just 4. Evaporator used in refrigeration truck refrigeration system is operated on low temperature condition. Accordingly, evaporator is formed frost and the formation of frost is rapidly decreased performance of evaporator. In this study, the performance of evaporator using R134a and R1234yf refrigerant was analyzed with operating conditions under frost condition. As a result, the performance of R134a evaporator according to air inlet temperature, relative humidity and evaporating temperature was more sensitive than R1234yf evaporator. Besides, the frost growth of R134a evaporator is steeper than that of R1234yf one.

For supporting future demands of lower temperature. environmental friendly low- temperature refrigerants must be studied and developed to replace halocarbon. Ethane. which is one of hydrocarbon compound. is an environmental friendly refrigerant because it has zero ODP and GWP ${\sim}$ 20[per 100yr]. On this study, two-stage cascade refrigeration system was utilized to investigate performance of ethane on the low-stage. By employing R22 at higher stages. energetic performance as well as operating condition of R22/R170 system is compared to R22/R23. At low stage evaporation pressure ranges from 1.10 to 2.74 bar, R22/R170 shows higher COP over R22/R23. Furthermore, at the same range evaporation temperature R22/R170 can reach lower temperature.
This paper reviews the literature that has been published since 1980s related to cryogenic refrigeration systems for quantum computing. The reason why such a temperature level of 10-20 mK is necessary for quantum computing is that the superconducting qubit is sensitive to even very small thermal disturbances. The entanglement of the qubits may not be sustained due to thermal fluctuations and mechanical vibrations beyond their thresholds. This phenomenon is referred to as decoherence, and it causes an computation error in operation. For the stable operation of the quantum computer, a low-vibration cryogenic refrigeration system is imperative as an enabling technology. Conventional dilution refrigerators (DR), so called 'wet' DR, are precooled by liquid helium, but a more convenient and economical precooling method can be achieved by using a mechanical refrigerator instead of liquid cryogen. These 'dry' DRs typically equip pulse-tube refrigerators (PTR) for precooling the DRs around 4 K because of its particular advantage of low vibration characteristic. In this review paper, we have focused on the development status of 4 K PTRs and further potential development issues will be also discussed. A quiet 4 K refrigerator not only serves as an indispensable precooler of DR but also immediately enhances the characteristics of low noise amplifiers (LNA) or other cryo-electronics of various type quantum computers.

In this study, in order to develop composition ceramics for refrigeration device application, $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ composition was fabricated using conventional solid-state method. Electrocaloric effect of this ceramic was investigated using the characteristics of P-E hysteresis loops at wide temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$. Curie temperature of $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ ceramics showed $80^{\circ}C$. The maximum value of ${\Delta}T=0.12^{\circ}C$ in ambient temperature of $115^{\circ}C$ under 30 kV/cm was appeared. It is concluded that $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ ceramics can be applied as refrigeration device application.

Experimental investigation on the performance of dual-evaporator refrigeration system with an ejector has been carried out. In this study, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant R134a is chosen as a working fluid. The condenser and two-evaporators are made as concentric double pipes with counter-flow type heat exchangers. Experiments were peformed by changing the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids entering condenser, high-pressure evaporator and low-pressure evaporator at test conditions keeping a constant compressor speed. When the external conditions (inlet temperatures of secondary fluid entering condenser and one of the evaporators) are fixed, results show that coefficient of performance (COP) increases as the inlet temperature of the other evaporator rises. It is also shown that the COP decreases as the mass flow rate ratio of suction fluid to motive fluid increases. The COP of dual-evapo-rator refrigeration system with an ejector is superior to that of a single-evaporator vapor compression system by 3 to 6%.
