  • The characteristics of the R-22 two-stage compression refrigeration systems were investigated. The apparatus consisted of 0.5HP and 1HP hermetic reciprocating compressors for the high and low stage sides respectively, a condenser, an evaporator, a heat exchanger, four expansion valves, and two intercoolers. The experiments covered a range of refrigerant flow rates from 24 to 84kg/h, and the inlet temperature of cooling water in the condenser and heat source water in the evaporator ranged from 20 to 30$^.\circ}C$The results Showed that the refrigerant flow rate had greater effect on the refrigerating capacities, the compression efficiency and the coefficient of performance of two-stage compression systems than the inlet temperature of heat source water. And all these values were decreased with increasing inlet temperatures of the cooling water. The pressure drops in the evaporator of two-stage compression systems were decreased in proportion to the increase in the inlet temperature of the heat source and cooling water, but it was increased by the refrigerant flow rate.

  • In this study, a geothermal power generation system using the Kalina cycle was investigated by the simulation method. The Kalina cycle system can be used for the utilization of a low-temperature heat sources such as geothermal and industrial waste heat that are not hot enough to produce steam. The sea/river water can be considered as a cooling media. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The model contains a turbine, a pump, an expansion valve and heat exchangers. The turbine and pump were modelled by an isentropic efficiency, while a condenser, an evaporator and a regenerative heat exchanger were modeled by UA-LMTD method with a counter-flow assumption. The effect of the ammonia fraction at the separator inlet on the cycle performance is investigated in detail.

  • Fin-tube evaporator for carbon dioxide has been investigated both by experiment and simulation. Inside refrigerant heat transfer and outside heat and mass transfer of a wet surface heat exchanger were modeled using appropriate correlations. The results estimated by the calculation were in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation errors were less than 7.9% for estimating capacity, 0.6$^{\circ}C$ for air exit temperature, 1.2% for air exit humidity and 17% for $CO_2$ exit pressure. The simulation program was used to study the effect of air flow direction, number of rows and refrigerant circuits. For a 2-row evaporator, parallel flow showed better performance for low air velocity but for high air velocity, counter-flow was better. Refrigerant circuits, however, showed insignificant effect on the performance.

  • Copper is a well know material for use as heat sink or heat exchanger. However, copper has a considerable low tensile strength and temperature limit. A material that has a good thermal conductivity, low cost, but also excellent mechanical properties are desired. In order to identify the mechanism for the material properties of cast Cu-Fe alloys, $Cu_{50}-Fe_{50}$ (wt.%) alloy was produced by using a high-frequency induction furnace, a typical metal casting process. The Cu-Fe alloy consists of Cu, ${\alpha}$-Fe, ${\gamma}$-Fe with dendrite structures. The crystal structure and microstructure of the prepared $Cu_{50}-Fe_{50}$ alloy were systematically examined using XRD, FE-SEM, EDS and XRF for electrical devices.

  • Experiments were performed to verify if performance and characteristic curves obtained from the temperature differential defrosting method, where surface temperature is measured to judge defrosting condition, can be reproduced by the photoelectric technology where defrosting condition is judged by photoelectric sensors. The output voltage of a phototransistor and heating capacity, power consumption, and surface temperature of the outdoor heat exchanger are compared. The results showed that the photoelectric sensors can be used as a defrost control device. On-off control timings in temperature differential defrosting method are in good agreement with those predicted by the high and low threshold output voltages of the photoelectric sensor.

  • To ensure the measuring accuracy of the wall temperature, the outer wall temperature measurement values by using three kinds of thermocouple welding methods were analyzed and evaluated in the paper, including single-point flush-mounted in the wall groove method, single-point insert-mounted in the wall groove, and outer surface direct welding method, based on the application of a tube-in-tube condensing heat exchanger. And the impacts of silver, tin, and thermal resistance adhesive as filling materials on wall temperature measurement were also investigated, and the results were compared to that obtained without filling materials. The results showed that the wall temperatures measured by the three welding methods were lower than the theoretically calculated value. And the wall temperature measured by the outer surface direct welding method was lowest under the same experimental conditions. The wall temperatures measured by single-point flush-mounted and insert-mounted in the wall groove methods were also affected by different welding filling materials. It was found that the greater the thermal resistance of filling materials, the smaller the heat loss. By analyzing the reasons for the low measured value of wall temperature, a new wall temperature measurement method was developed to improve the accuracy of the current measurement method. Meanwhile, the outer wall temperature measurement experiments of vertical and horizontal heat transfer tubes were carried out to validate and calibrate the improved outer wall temperature measurement method. The results showed that the average outer wall temperature deviation measured by the improved wall temperature measurement method ranged from - 0.82% to +2.29% for vertical tubes and - 4.75% to - 1.44% for horizontal tubes, and the improved measurement method had good measurement accuracy.

  • In this study, the influence of a frost formed on the vertical plate for different operating conditions(the temperature of the air, the humidity of the air, the velocity of the air, and the temperature of the cooling plate) is investigated. The performance of the heat exchanger is examined by introducing a parameter such as the energy transfer resistance. Correlations which relate frost density, frost thickness and energy transfer resistance to Reynolds number, air temperature and humidity, and cooling plate temperature are developed. Static pressure drop and air flow rate are expressed as a function of free flow area of air.

  • Heat transfer performances of individual row of two-row fin and tube heat exchangers are experimentally investigated. Tested are four heat exchangers which are geometrically identical with the exception of fin shape, slit or louver, and that the fins between the first row and the second row are connected or separated. The tube diameter and fin spacing of the heat exchangers examined are 7mm and 1.4mm, respectively. All thermal fluid measurements are made using a psychrometric calorimeter. In order to evaluate air-side heat transfer coefficients of individual rows, tube-side water flow rates of individual rows are independently controlled such that the water-side temperature drops in each row remain at $5^{\circ}C$. Frontal air velocity varies in the range from 0.7m/s to 2.5m/s. Heat transfer coefficients are presented in terms of Colburn ${\jmath}-factor$. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the upstream row is larger than that for the downstream row at low Reynolds numbers.

  • To demonstrate the desalination system, the demo-plant was scheduled to be installed. The system was planned to use solar thermal collector as heat source and PV as electricity source. For the design of the desalination demonstration system, firstly the solar thermal system would be well designed from the result between the supplied heat into the fresh water generator and the fresh water yield. The generator for demonstration system was chosen as the fresh water generator of the single stage and effect with plate-type heat exchanger using low pressure evaporation method. The test facility for the tests to reveal the relationship between the fresh water yield and the supplied heat flow rate was designed and manufactured. The maximum fresh water yield of two fresh water generators applied in this study was designed as 1.5 Ton/day. The parameters relating with the performance of fresh water generator are known as sea water inlet temperature, hot water inlet temperature, and hot water flow rate. Through the experiments, this study firstly showed detail operation characteristics of the generator and designed the solar thermal system for the demonstration system.

  • This paper proposes an optimum pipe material (PVC vs. PE) design & selection for open loop ground heat exchangers. Heat exchange efficiency and/or workability, and the need for trench insulation were investigated by comparing EWT (cooling mode) of each system. CFD simulations for the PVC and PE pipe with the same inner diameter show similar EWT. This is because the PVC pipe has a small thickness but a low thermal conductivity as compared to the PE pipe, and thus these two properties tend to offset each other. However, a hypothetically insulated pipe led to a meaningful drop of EWT. This means pipe insulation is of importance in performance of ground heat exchangers. From analyzing climate data and system operation, it is not advantageous to insulate trench pipes due to construction difficulties and ground temperature characteristics that are seasonally varied.
