A Numerical Analysis on Combustion Characteristics of the Gasoline Engine using Methanol Reformulated Fuels under WOT Condition (전부하 운전조건에서 메탄올 개질연료를 사용한 가솔린 엔진의 연소특성에 대한 수치해석)

  • This research is to decide the possibility of using RM50(reformulated methanol fuel) without any modification of engine by the method of numerical analysis. Comparing the heat release rate, the difference among each fuel was decreased according to the increase of the engine speed, and the maximum heat release rate was higher in the order of RM50 and gasoline fuel. Also, this order corresponds to the order of burning speed. RM50 had the higher turbulent burning speed, and the curve of turbulent intensity was showed similar tendency to the curve of turbulent burning speed. RM50 had relatively high burning speed, short quenching length, high temperature in cylinder, so that it might increase NO emission, but owing to chemical reaction dynamics, it was decreased NO emission. Therefore, in order to predict the possibility of using RM50, it is needed to consider not only the temperature in cylinder by low heating value, but also combustion characteristics including burning speed.

  • We tried to improve the coating capability of the coating material using an additive(hexagonal crystalline graphite) of 2%, 3%, 4% and 6% under various pouring temperature for the easy isolation of sand and coating material from the final product. As a result in case of using a 2% and 3% additive to the Korean coating material generally no burning state has been occurred under the low pouring temperature, but it has been gradually increased with the pouring temperature, while in case of using a 2% and 3% additive to the Japanese coating material we could observe a strong burning state throughout the whole pouring temperature. On the other hand in case of using a 4% and 6% additive there has been no burning state through out the whole pouring temperature. From this result we could see that the best state of the final product without sand and coating material could generally be obtained if 4% and/or 6% of the crystalline graphite and the pouring temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$$\pm$$5^{\circ}C$ would be used.

  • Volatile organic compounds are air pollutants exhausting from industrial process, evaporation of solvent, and so on. Most of VOCs are the combustible gas of low calorific value as it is diluted by air. The systems burning such a hazardous gas need to increase enthalpy in order to increase flame stability. In this study an incinerator with reciprocating flow in the honeycomb ceramic has been used for the experiment of VOCs control. By the reciprocating flow system, the enthalpy of combustion gas is effectively regenerated into the enthalpy increases of the combustible gas through the honeycomb ceramic, which provides a heat storage. The position of the reaction zone is strongly dependent on the parameters of mixture velocity and time frequency. Flame front is changed to the point where burning velocity is coincided with burning velocity in the honeycomb ceramic. In this system it is important that flame front should be located symmetrically at the center of honeycomb ceramic for the purpose of increasing the reaction rate at one point. Peak temperature becomes higher with decreasing time frequency, at which the flow direction is regularly reversed.

  • Fuel flexibility of CFBC boiler was examined. Combustion characteristics of low grade coal, coal sludge, coal RDF mixture and RDF were compared. The operation result of a commercial 130TPH CFBC co-generation boiler burning a low grade Chinese coal were analysed. Burning characteristics of coal/RDF mixture and coal and industrial sludge mixture were studied in a 0.1MWth scale CFBC test rig. Also RDF fuel were tested in a 8TPH CFBC test facility. Though fuel characteristics were different, the combustion modes were all very stable. The temperature were maintained in between $800-950^{\circ}C$.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are low calorific value gases (LCVG) emitted from chemical processes such as painting booth, dye works and drying processes etc. Characteristics of VOCs are low calorific values less than 150 kcal/$m^3$, high activation energy for ignition and low energy output. These characteristics usually make combustion unstable and its treatment processes needs high-energy consumption, The cyclone combustion system is suitable for LCVG burning because it can recirculate energy through a high swirling flow to supply the activation energy for ignition, increases energy density to make a combustion temperature higher than usual swirl combustor and also increases mixing intensity, This research was conducted to develop optimized cyclone combustion system for thermal oxidation of VOCs. This research was executed to establish the effect of swirl number with respect to the combustion temperature and composition of exhausted gas in the specific combustor design.

  • This study was investigated and analyzed the side of phenomenological of the chlorophyll bleaching phenomenon on the leaf burning-disease of the Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) leaf. Red light (660-700 nm) was confirmed as one which induced the bleaching phenomenon and blue light (400-500 nm) did not at all. Temperature as 1 environmental factor had not any influence on chlorophyll bleaching phenomenon at all. Therefore, simple burning (thermal damage) hypothesis was perfectly ruled out by the result of this study. And, low pH accelerated chlorophyll bleaching velocity. A primary factor of chlorophyll bleaching phenomenon may be peculiar structural difference of the Ginseng leaf compared with other plant.

  • The emission control of automobile has been intensified as a part of the countermeasure to decrease air pollution in the world. As the cars with an alternative fuel starts to get into the spotlight, the cars with low emission has been introduced and exhaust gas regulation forced in this country. These days, LPG vehicles, which infrastructure of fuel was already built up, and CNG vehicles are recognized for alternative fuel cars in this country. In this study, the constant volume combustion chamber was manufactured and used for experiments to obtain the combustion characteristics of propane mixture. The combustion characteristics was analyzed, with the change of supply conditions of propane fuel. Inside the combustion chamber, the maximum temperature increase with the initial pressure is going up. The burning velocity also seems to have the same characteristic as the temperature. However, the heat flux do not change much according to the theoretical correct mixture but it changes with the various initial temperature of the combustion chamber.

The experiment measured the combustion characteristics, in regard to the change of combustion variable, and the change of ignition energy. During the combustion of fuel, the maximum temperature inside the combustion chamber is higher when the initial pressure is higher. The burning velocity also seems to have the same characteristic as the temperature. However, the heat flux did not change much with the theoretical correct mixture but the various initial temperature of the combustion chamber. The heat flux got faster and ignition energy bigger as the dwell time of the ignition system expanded. When the dwell time get longer, the ignition energy also increased then fixed. The ignition energy increased as the initial pressure inside the combustion chamber higher. The heat flux got faster as the dwell time expanded.

A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Diesel Fuel Droplet with Additive Oxygenate and Paraffin (함산소 및 파라핀계 혼합 디젤유 액적의 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • The single droplet combustion characteristics of multicomponent fuel such as diesel-oxygenate and diesel-paraffin blends under high ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure were investigated in the study. The results of the study may be concluded as follows : In the combustion of diesel fuel droplet with additive of oxygenate and paraffin, the dimensionless droplet size of $(D/D_o)^2$ was linearly decreased with time. A fuel droplet with low boiling temperature additives and in high boiling temperature diesel fuel evaporates and burns faster than usual diesel fuel. This rapid burning may result from so-called "micro-explosion" and its burning intensity varies with the types of additives. The results above may suggest that rapid evaporation of oxygenate additive in the middle stage of combustion can contribute much to combustion improvement of blended fuels. When compared to ordinary diesel fuel, neat oxygenate and paraffin fuels show blue flame during entire combustion which prove smokeless combustion.

  • Methane Hydrates or Natural Gas Hydrates (hereinafter NGH) are solid-state energy source formed by the clathration of methane gas in water molecules at low temperature and high pressure. NGH is also known as "burning ice" because of its burning property and appearance similar to that of dry ice. Today, concerns about the NGH are rising as an environment-friendly energy source that can replace fossil fuels. In this paper, to keep pace with the research and development of the NGH, the properties of the NGH and the general features of NGH carriers are introduced.
