For the successful R&D and deployment of LED-based green energy lighting systems, the real-time power quality measurement of both various non-linear power signals including pulse waveform, spike waveform, etc and the undesired-signals including harmonics, sag, swell, etc is required. In this paper, we propose a low-cost power quality measurement (PQM) method for low- (60Hz-several KHz) to high-frequency (several tens KHz) power signals, which are generated by green-energy lighting systems, and implement a PQM testbed using TI TMS320F28335 MCU. The proposed algorithm is programmed using C in the CCS (Code Composer Studio) 3.3 environment and is verified using test signals generated by an arbitrary signal generator, NF-WF1974. In the implemented testbed, we can measure various non-linear current signals that LED SMPS generates, analyze harmonics by fast Fourier transform, and test sag, swell, and interruption using wavelet transform.

Currently, the quantize-and-forward (QF) scheme with high order modulation and quantization has rather high complexity and it is thus impractical, especially in multiple relay cooperative communications. To overcome these deficiencies, an improved low complex QF scheme is proposed by the combination of the low order binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and the 1-bit and 2-bit quantization, respectively. In this scheme, the relay selection is optimized by the best relay position for best bit-error-rate (BER) performance, where the relays are located closely to the destination node. In addition, an optimal power allocation is also suggested on a total power constraint. Finally, the BER and the achievable rate of the low order 1-bit, 2-bit and 3-bit QF schemes are simulated and analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the 3-bit QF scheme has about 1.8~5 dB, 4.5~7.5 dB and 1~2.5 dB performance gains than those of the decode-and-forward (DF), the 1-bit and 2-bit QF schemes, at BER of $10^{-2}$, respectively. For the 2-bit QF, the scheme of the normalized Source-Relay (S-R) distance with 0.9 has about 5dB, 7.5dB, 9dB and 15dB gains than those of the distance with 0.7, 0.5, 0.3 and 0.1, respectively, at BER of $10^{-3}$. In addition, the proposed optimal power allocation saves about 2.5dB much more relay power on an average than that of the fixed power allocation. Therefore, the proposed QF scheme can obtain excellent features, such as good BER performance, low complexity and high power efficiency, which make it much pragmatic in the future cooperative communications.
An efficiency improving method for Uninterruptible Power Supply System(UPS) was developed by using OP-AMP based application circuits such as voltage detection device, current detection device and static switch control device. The efficiency improving algorithm was made by mixing the operating concepts of On-Line type UPS with the operating concepts of Off-Line type UPS. The UPS' inverter does not work if the UPS' output load current is not higher than the low load operating current which is about 0-30(%) of the UPS' output load capacity. The low load operating current is adjustable within the half of the UPS' output load capacity. If the UPS' output load current is rising over than the low load operating current, the UPS' inverter starts working and the inverter output power feeds to the loads of UPS. If UPS' input power breaks out while UPS' inverter does not operate because the load current is low, the inverter starts working within 4(ms) with excessive output voltage which is ${\pm}$8(%) of normal UPS' output voltage. Like these. UPS can continuously feeds power to it's load device and reduce power consumptions.

This paper proposes a low power-loss current measurement using a resistor and bypass switch. Conventional current sensing method using a resistor has a disadvantage of power loss which degrades the efficiency of the entire systems. On the other hand, proposed measurement technique operating with bypass-switch connected in parallel with sensing resistor can reduce power loss significantly the current sensor. The propose measurement works for discrete-time sampling of current sensing. Even while the analog-digital conversion does not occur at the controller, the sensing voltage across the sensor still causes ohmic conduction loss without information delivery. Hence, the bypass switch bypasses the sensing current with a small amount of power loss. In this paper, a 90[W] prototype hardware has been implemented for photovoltaic MPPT experimental verification of the proposed low power-loss current measurement technique. From the results, it can be seen that PV power observation is successfully done with the proposed method.

Recently, the interest in DC systems to achieve more efficient connection with renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and DC loads has been growing extensively. DC systems are more advantageous than AC systems because of their low conversion losses. However, the DC-link voltage is variable during operation because of different random effects. This study focuses on DC voltage stabilization applied in stand-alone DC microgrids by means of voltage ranges, power management, and coordination scheme. The quality and stability of the entire system are improved by keeping the voltage within acceptable limits. In terms of optimized control, the maximum power should be tracked from renewable resources during different operating modes of the system. The ESS and VSDG cover the power shortage after all available renewable energy is consumed. Keeping the state of charge of the ESS within the allowed bands is the key role of the control system. Load shedding or power generation curtailment should automatically occur if the maximum tolerable voltage variation is exceeded. PSIM-based simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed control measures.

This paper presents a novel reset scheme for mm-scale sensing systems with stringent volume and area constraints. In such systems, multi-layer structure is required to maximize the silicon area per volume and minimize the system size. The multi-layer structure requires wirebonding connections for power delivery and communication among layers, but the area overhead for wirebonding pads can be significant. The proposed reset scheme exploits already existing power wires and thus does not require additional wires for system-wide reset operation. To implement the proposed reset scheme, a power management unit is designed to impose reset condition, and a reset detector is designed to interpret the reset condition indicated by the power wires. The reset detector uses a coupling capacitor for the initial power-up and a feedback path to hold the developed supply voltage. The prototype reset detector is fabricated in a $180-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and the measurement results with the prototype mm-scale system confirmed robust reset operation over a wide range of temperatures and voltages.

Wave power generation systems operated in the ocean, has been developed as large power and grid power connection systems in general. However, small wave power generation systems offer operational efficiency for the lighted (navigation aids) buoy. They simply adopts a full-wave rectification for charging battery (direct connection method). In this paper, a wave power controller based on a booster converter is developed by considering a characteristic of the wells turbine. Both direct connection and booster converter power controller is designed and tested to compare the characteristics. Experiments demonstrate that the output of the proposed controller has improved the characteristic of output power, when generator output voltage is low.
This paper presents a special protection scheme, which was established in the KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) system, against a critically low voltage profile in a part of the system after a double-circuit tower outage. Without establishing the scheme, the outage triggers the operation of a zone 3 relay and trips the component. This sequence of events possibly leads to a blackout of the local system. The scheme consists of an inter-substation communication network using PITR (Protective Integrated Transmitter and Receiver) for acquisition of the substations' data, and under-voltage load shedding devices. This paper describes the procedure for determining the load shedding in the scheme and the experiences of the implementation.
This paper presents a novel circuit topology of the double two-switch forward type high frequency transformer linked soft-switching PWM DC-DC power converter with tapped inductor filters that can operate under a condition of the low peak voltage stress across the power semiconductor devices and lowered peak current stress through the transformer for some high power applications. This circuit topology of an interleaved two-switch forward soft-switching power converter is proposed in the order to minimize an idle circulating current due to the tapped inductor filter without of any additional active auxiliary resonant-assisted snubber circuits, such as active resonant DC link snubbers and AC link snubbers, active resonant commutation leg link snubbers. The unique advantages of this power converter are less power circuit components and power semiconductor devices, constant frequency PWM scheme, cost effective configuration and wider soft-switching PWM operation range under PWM power regulations load variations. The practical effectiveness of the proposed soft-switching converter circuit topology is tested by simulations and is proved by experimental results received from the 500W-100kHz breadboard setup.

Forest fire simulation tests were performed with polymer and porcelain insulators at GOCHANG Power Testing Center. These tests consisted of open flames causing a temperature rise of up to $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ measured at the insulator surfaces. Mechanical and electrical characteristics such as the specific mechanical load, the low frequency dry flashover voltage and the impulse flashover voltage were analyzed for the polymer insulators before, during and after the simulation tests and then compared to the porcelain insulators. At the end of the fire simulation tests, there was no detrimental deterioration of any of the insulators. All the insulators passed the KEPCO specification criteria. This study showed that the forest fire simulation had no impact on the polymer insulators.
