  • The vibration isolation system is a system that attenuates the vibration transmitted from surroundings by using external energy supply like electricity and feedback and/or feedforward functions. Such a system needs stiff structure to make precise positioning without ripple within a certain bandwidth. So, a horizontal and rotary arrangement of the actuation module is suggested by using lever linkage. Modeling and kinematic formulation are completed and system identification is accomplished to tune the design variables accurately. The vibration isolation control is performed by mu-synthesis with the uncertainties in design variables. Low frequency signal enhancement circuit and saturation proof integration algorithm are devised to use seismic sensors for displacement control. This overall system shows good disturbance rejection performance.

  • Micro vibration isolation, typically originated from ground, is always a prime concern for the nano-measurement instruments such as Atomic Force Microscopes. A four mount active vibration isolation system is proposed in this paper. Modeling and control of such a four mount system was analyzed. Combined active-passive isolation principle is used for vibration isolation by mounting the instrument on a passively damped isolation system made of Elastomer along with the active stage in parallel that consists of very soft actuation system, the Voice Coil Motor. The active stage works in combination with the passive stage for working as a very low frequency vibration attenuator.

  • With the rotational speed of the hard disk drive (HDD) increased, the low frequency structural vibration induced by the unbalance force gives rise to the structure home noise of the personal computer, and finally degrades the noise quality. As the unbalance of the hard disk drive is decided by the mechanical assembly allowance between clamping and platter disk, there is limit to control this unbalance by the improved assembly method. To improve the noise and vibration performance of PC, basically the unbalance of HDD needs to be measured absolutely and reduced during the stage of the disk assembly. This study introduces the HDD unbalance measurement methods of the absolute magnitude based on the mobility concept, and the unbalance location information with the acceleration orbit.

  • A new mechanical-electrical hybrid passive dam ping treatment is proposed to improve the performance of structural vibration control. The proposed hybrid passive damping system consists of a constrained layer damping treatment and a shunt circuit. In a passive mechanical constrained layer damping, a viscoelastic material damping layer is used to control the structural vibration modes in high frequency range. The passive electrical damping is designed for targeting the vibration amplitude in the low frequency range. The governing equations of motion are derived through the Hamilton's principle. The obtained mathematical model is validated experimentally. The presented theoretical and experimental techniques provide invaluable tools for controlling the multiple modes of a vibrating structure over a wide frequency band.

  • The vibration of a running vehicle can be classified on lateral, longitudinal and vertical motions. The important factor on the stability and ride quality of a railway vehicle is the lateral motion. The contact between wheel and rail with conicity influences strongly on the lateral motion. In this study, an experiment for the vibration of a running railway vehicle was performed using a small scale railway vehicle model. Also, the effects on the car body, bogie and wheelset were examined for the weight and the stiffness of the first and second suspension. The experimental results showed that the lateral vibration increases as the wheel conicity and stiffness of the second suspension increase. And the lateral vibration of the bogie increases as the mass ratio between car body and bogie increases. Also, the lateral vibration of the wheel becomes high at low speed, while the wheel of 1/20 conicity makes severe vibration at high speed running.

  • The dynamic modulation transfer function (MTF) for image degradation caused by sinusoidal vibration is formulated based on a Bessel function of the first kind. The presented method makes it possible to obtain an analytical MTF expression derived for arbitrary frequency sinusoidal vibration. The error obtained by the use of finite order sum approximations instead of infinite sums is investigated in detail. Dynamic MTF exhibits a stronger random behavior for low frequency vibration than high frequency vibration. The calculated MTFs agree well with the measured MTFs with the slant edge method in imaging experiments. With the proposed formula, allowable amplitudes of any frequency vibration are easily calculated. This is practical for the analysis and design of the line-of-sight stabilization system in the remote sensing camera.

  • This paper deals with the method of vibration measurement of a gun barrel structure using mechanical filter. When a bullet with high speed is moving within a gun barrel type structure with low bending vibration frequencies, it is difficult to measure the bending vibration signals of the structure. For example, noncontact type sensors such as displacement or velocity sensor are not appropriate for the measurement of vibrational signals because of the movement effect of the equipment frame through the moving structures or effect of the ground vibration. One of contact type sensors such as accelerometer is profitable for measurement of vibrational signals because of its wide measurement ranges. In the case of a gun barrel structure including high vibrational signals like shock waves, however, it is necessary to propose vibration measurement method filtering high frequencies. The purpose of the paper is to propose the proper vibrational measurement technique filtering high frequencies of a gun barrel type structure.

  • Vibration characteristics of the feeding system in a CD-ROM drive are identified by a theoretical modeling as well as vibration experiments. For this purpose, we establish a vibration model due to the rigid-body motion and perform the modal testings using the impact hammer and shaker. The analysis and experiments show that the feeding system has three rigid-body vibration modes in the low-frequency region and two of them come from the tilting modes. In order to remove the harmful tilting modes for the tracking servo control, a methodology to find the optimal positions of the dampers is also proposed in this study.

  • In modern surveillance equipment, infrared (IR) sensors are essential for detection and observation. The IR sensor is connected to a miniature cryogenic cooler to maintain the temperature at very low levels, i.e., temperatures as low as 77 K. However, the quality of the image captured by the sensor is degraded by the transmission of vibration disturbances from the cooler. Therefore, to maintain high image quality, the compressor vibration and the force transmitted to the sensor have to be mitigated. For the compressor vibration isolating system, a tuned dynamic vibration absorber, combined with a passive isolator, is proposed. A cryogenic compressor bracket and springs are designed to allow the absorber mass to mitigate the vibration jitter in the axial direction. The system design is analyzed and evaluated in terms of the dynamic suppression of the harmonic force at the operating frequency of the cooler.

  • In urban tunnels, namely, in case there are residents in the near distance, we normally use non-vibration and ambient vibration which are not blasting methods because it’ impossible to meet the blasting vibration regulation with only normal explosives. However, non-vibration methods not only cause increase of excavating cost, but need much time than explosives. Generally, the lower velocity explosives with 2,000 m/s VOD have been applied to ambient vibration blasting in open cut area, but difficult in tunneling in its use. However, by charging the hole together with lower velocity explosives and normal explosives, we have got the result which shows 20~30% vibration decrease compared with using only normal explosives. Therefore, I’ like to suggest the blasting method which is able to do as ambient vibration using lower velocity explosives mixed with normal explosives in urban tunnel and the area which is adjacent to security facilities within the vibration regulation.
