A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of inflow supply air temperature and velocity on ventilation effectiveness in an underfloor air conditioning space. A low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions. A step-down injection method is used to calculate local and room mean ages from transient concentrations based on the concept of the age of air. Results show that there is a significant effect of Archimedes number on ventilation effectiveness especially for cooling conditions. Reynolds number shows relatively minor effect on velocity distribution and ventilation effectiveness especially for isothermal and heating conditions. It can be concluded that underfloor air conditioning system provides good ventilation characteristics for cooling conditions because of temperature stratification in the space.
The primary goal of this research is to investigate flow separation phenomena using various turbulence models. Also investigated are the effects of free-stream turbulence intensity on the flow over a NACA 0018 airfoil. The flow field around a NACA 0018 airfoil has been numerically simulated using RANS at Reynolds numbers ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 and angles of attack (AoA) ranging from 0° to 18° with various inflow conditions. A parametric study is conducted over a range of chord Reynolds numbers for free-stream turbulence intensities from 0.1 % to 0.5 % to understand the effects of each parameter on the suction side laminar separation bubble. The results showed that increasing the free-stream turbulence intensity reduces the length of the separation bubble formed over the suction side of the airfoil, as well as the flow prediction accuracy of each model. These models were used to compare the modeling accuracy and processing time improvements. The K- SST performs well in this simulation for estimating lift coefficients, with only small deviations at larger angles of attack. However, a stall was not predicted by the transition k-kl-omega. When predicting the location of flow reattachment over the airfoil, the transition k-kl-omega model also made some over-predictions. The Cp plots showed that the model generated results more in line with the experimental findings.
Three-dimensional flow analysis is implemented to investigate the flow through transonic axial-flow compressor rotor(NASA R67) and to evaluate the performances of Abid's low-Reynolds-number k-$\omega$ and Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models. A finite volume method is used fur spatial discretization. The equations are solved implicitly in time by the use of approximate factorization. The upwind difference scheme is used for inviscid terms and viscous terms are approximated with central difference. The flux-difference-splitting method of Roe is used to obtain fluxes at the cell faces. Numerical analysis is performed near peak efficiency and near stall. The results are compared with the experimental data for NASA R67 rotor. Blade-to-Blade Mach number distributions are compared to confirm the accuracy of the code. From the results, it is concluded that Abid'k-$\omega$ model is better for the calculation of flow rate and efficiency than Baldwin-Lomax model. But, the predictions for Mach number and shock structure are almost the same.
A theoretical and numerical investigation is performed on the flow in a micronozzle for precision-controlled sealant dispenser. The working fluid is a highly viscous epoxy used as sealant in producing LCD panels, which contains a number of tiny solid spacers. Flow analysis is conducted in order to achieve the optimal design of internal geometry of a nozzle. A simplified design analysis methodology is proposed for predicting the flow in the nozzle based on the assumption that the Reynolds number is much less than O(1). The parallel numerical computations are performed by using a CFD package FLUENT. Comparison discloses that the theoretical model gives a good prediction on the distribution of pressure and wall shear stress in the nozzle. However, the theoretical model has a difficulty in predicting the maximum wall shear stress as found in a limited region near edge by numerical computation. The theoretical and numerical simulations provide the good guideline for designing a dispensing micronozzle.
A new low Reynolds number nonlinear second moment turbulence closure was introduced to analyze a square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow. Inclusion of nonlinear return to isotropy term and cubic mean pressure strain term has brought out a marked improvement in the level of agreement with measured velocity profiles. Optimization of present closure was performed by comparison of computed velocity profiles with the experimental ones with variation of nonlinear return to isotropy term and quadratic and cubic pressure-strain model. Progressive vortex breakdown due to the interaction of primary and secondary flows was well captured by using the optimized second moment turbulence closure.
A Navier-Stokes code with a modified low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used to study the unsteady transitional boundary layer flow due to rotor-stator interaction. The modification, proposed by Launder, to improve prediction of stagnation flows was incorporated to the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. turbulence model by Fan-Lakshminarayana-Barnett. Numerical solution is shown to capture well the calmed laminar flow as well as the wake induced transitional strip due to rotor-stator interaction and shows improvement, in terms of onset of transition and its length, over previous Euler/boundary layer solution. The turbulent kinetic energy shows local maximum along the upstream rotor wake in the wake induced transitional strip and this characteristics is observed untill the end of transition. The wake induced strip also shown apparent even in the laminar sublayer as the upstream rotor wake penetrates inside the boundary layer.
A marine flapped rudder is designed to improve the effective lift generated by the rudder; this also improves the maneuverability of the ship. The flap is a high lift device installed at the trailing edge of the rudder to augment lift. In this paper, the characteristics of a thick flapped rudder are analyzed at a low Reynolds number with various ratios of flap chord length to total chord length and various aspect ratios, based on the computational fluid dynamics technique. The performance of the rudder with respect to lift, drag, and center of pressure are investigated, and the efficient ratio of flap chord length to total chord length and improved aspect ratio are determined. Ed: highlight - or 'superior'. As a case study, the flow on the flapped rudder of an NACA0021 section shape in free stream condition is simulated. The standard k-epsilon turbulence model is used to model the flow around the flapped rudder. The results indicate that the efficient ratio of the flap chord length to total chord length and aspect ratio are 0.3 and 1.4, respectively.
Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.
In this paper, confined multiple slot jet impingement with exhaust ports is investigated numerically. A flow cell, defined as volume sectioned by the impingement and confinement surfaces and the centerlines of adjacent nozzle and exhaust port, is chosen for computational domain. The effects of Reynolds number and geometrical parameters on the heat transfer performance and the flow characteristics are studied. For turbulence, the Abe-Kondoh-Nagano version of the low-Reynolds k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed. The results showed that the local Nusselt number distribution is shifted down and show poor heat transfer performance for small Reynolds number and small ratio of the lateral and axial length of flow cell. The rest of range, except the range of the shift phenomenon, can be classified into three groups by heat transfer characteristics.
The comparison of two commercial codes(FLUENT and STAR-CCM+) and an open-source code(OpenFOAM) are carried out for the aerodynamic analysis of flight vehicles at low speeds. Tailless blended-wing-body UCAV, main wing and propeller of HALE UAV(EAV-3) are chosen as geometries for the investigation. Using the same mesh, incompressible flow simulations are carried out and the results from three different codes are compared. In the linear region, the maximum difference of lift and drag coefficients of UCAV are found to be less than 2% and 5 counts, respectively and shows good agreement with wind tunnel test data. In a stall region, however, the reliability of RANS simulation is found to become poor and the uncertainty according to code also increases. The effect of turbulence models and meshes generated from different tools are also examined. The transition model yields better results in terms of drag which are much closer to the test data. The pitching moment is confirmed to be sensitive to the existence and the location of transition. For the case of EAV-3 wing, the difference of results with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is increased when Reynolds number becomes low. The results for the propeller show good agreement within 1% difference of thrust. The reliability and uncertainty of three codes is found to be reasonable for the purpose of engineering use. However, the physical validity and reliability of results seem to be carefully examined when ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is used for aerodynamic simulation at low speeds or low Reynolds number conditions.
