  • The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, energy management of liquid propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. The present study focused on the macroscopic spray characteristics of liquid sheets formed by triplet impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are compared to experiments conducted on spray images which formed by triplet impinging jets concerning with airassist effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure and high pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared by polymeric effect from molecular force and showed inactive atomization characteristics, because of extensional viscosity related by restriction of atomization process and breakup time delay of turbulence transition. As increasing mass flow rate of the air(increasing GAR), spray breakup level is also increased.

  • Diurnal variations of coastal surface wind speed are analyzed with five years of hourly wind from Port Aransas, Texas. These data reveal the highest frequency of occurrence of the nighttime wind maximum near midnight, especially during those seasons when onshore flow prevails. Nighttime wind maxima with a southerly component occurred approximately three times more frequently than with a northerly component on the annual average. The neutral atmospheric stability prevails near the coast. Thus it allows downward transfer of momentum from the nocturnal low level jet under the onshore wind situation and strong wind shear between an elevated frontal and ground-based inversion for offshore wind, resulting in the nocturnal coastal surface wind maximum.

  • The effects of injection angles between $0^{\circ}$ and $9^{\circ}$, mainstream turbulent intensities between 0.36 percent and 9.3 percent and embedded longitudinal vortices on jets issuing from a single film cooling hole and from a row of inclined holes are investigated. The heat transfer coefficients around film cooling holes are affected greatly by the compound injection angles. The injected jets affected weakly by the freestream turbulence at low level. However, the heat transfer coefficients near the film cooling holes have higher values at a high turbulence intensity. The vortices generated from a delta winglet change the injected jet direction and the kidney-type vortex pattern.

  • From the hourly data of 75 Korean weather stations over a 12-year period (2001~2012), this study has chosen three cases (January 12, 2006; January 11, 2008; and February 22, 2009) of multiple freezing rains and investigated the atmospheric circulations that seemed to cause the events. As a result, the receding high pressure type (2006), prevailing high pressure type (2008), and warm front type (2009) are confirmed as synoptic patterns. In all three cases, freezing rain was found in regions with a strong ascending current near the end point of a low-level jet that carried the warm humid air from low latitudes. The strong ascending current resulted from lower-level convergence and upper-level divergence. In 2006 and 2009, the melting process was confirmed. In 2008, the supercooled warm rain process (SWRP) was confirmed. In contrast to existing SWRP theory, it was found that the cool air produced at the middle atmosphere and near the earth's surface led to the formation of freezing rain. The sources of this cool air were supposed to be the evaporative latent heat and the cold advection coming from the northeast. On the other hand, a special case was detected, in which the freezing rain occurred when both the soil surface temperature and surface air temperature were above $0^{\circ}C$. The thickness distributions related to freezing rain in Korea were found to be similar to those in North America. A P-type nomogram was considered for freezing rain forecasting; however, it was not relevant enough to Korea, and few modifications were needed.

  • This study investigates the impact of cumulus parameterization scheme (CPS) with different horizontal grid sizes on the simulation of the local heavy rainfall case over the Korean Peninsula. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-based real-time forecast system of the Joint Center for High-impact Weather and Climate Research (JHWC) is used. Three CPSs are used for sensitivity experiments: the BMJ (Betts-Miller-Janjic), GD (Grell-Devenyi ensemble), and KF (Kain-Fritsch) CPSs. The heavy rainfall case selected in this study is characterized by low-level jet and low-level transport of warm and moist air. In 27-km simulations (DM1), simulated precipitation is overestimated in the experiment with BMJ scheme, and it is underestimated with GD scheme. The experiment with KF scheme shows well-developed precipitation cells in the southern and the central region of the Korean Peninsula, which are similar to the observations. All schemes show wet bias and cold bias in the lower troposphere. The simulated rainfall in 27-km horizontal resolution has influence on rainfall forecast in 9-km horizontal resolution, so the statements on 27-km horizontal resolution can be applied to 9-km horizontal resolution. In the sensitivity experiments of CPS for DM3 (3-km resolution), the experiment with BMJ scheme shows better heavy rainfall forecast than the other experiments. The experiments with CPS in 3-km horizontal resolution improve rainfall forecasts compared to the experiments without CPS, especially in rainfall distribution. The experiments with CPS show lower LCL(Lifted Condensation Level) than those without CPS at the maximum rainfall point, and weaker vertical velocity is simulated in the experiments with CPS compared to the experiments without CPS. It means that CPS suppresses convective instability and influences mainly convective rainfall. Consequently, heavy rainfall simulation with BMJ CPS is better than the other CPSs, and even in 3-km horizontal resolution, CPS should be applied to control convective instability. This conclusion can be generalized by conducting more experiments for a variety of cases over the Korean Peninsula.

  • For the sea-level performance test of rocket motor designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, ejectors with no induced secondary flow are generally used, which serves dual purposes of evacuating the test cell and performing as a supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED). The main concern of this research is to simulate starting transients in order to visualize evolution of internal shock structures in SED with different initial cell (vacuum chamber) pressures. RANS code with low Reynolds $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed for these computations. Numerical results were compared with the pressure measurements previously performed [Proceedings of 2004 Annual Conference, KIMST], and showed good agreements with pressure-time history of measured data. In the case of low vacuum chamber pressure, abrupt impingement of the under-expanded supersonic jet from the nozzle onto the diffuser wall was observed, whereas initial impingement point was located downstream and moved slowly upstream in the case of non-vacuum chamber pressure. In spite of initially dissimilar evolution of shock structures, iso-mach contour revealed that the steady shock structures had little difference except the location of flow separation and normal shock.

  • Fishing dredge in Jeollabuk-do began to become widespread in the 1960s and has continued to catch diverse kinds of shellfish in the productive fishing grounds around Dongjin River, Mangyeong River and Geum River estuaries. Since the 1970s, the construction of various large-scale industrial complex and the implementation of Saemangeum reclamation project have resulted in a decrease in main fishing areas and a sharp decline in shellfish production. As a result, dredge fishery has faced many difficulties. Dredge fishery in Jeollabuk-do is carried out with a total of 30 fishing permits as of 2016. Surf clams, hen clams, bladder moon snails, and common orient clams were mainly caught before the construction of Saemangeum dike while comb pen shells, purple whelks and ark shells are mainly caught afterwards. Inside the Saemangeum dike, most fish species have disappeared due to low water level and low salinity, and littleneck clams are caught using a jet pump type of fishing dredge. Outside the dike, the diversity of shellfish species has been reduced; comb pen shells are mainly caught. In this process, a lot of friction occurs due to the use of a reformatted dredge. Therefore, a lot of research needs to be conducted in the near future.

  • Ricci et al. (2017, Nature, 549, 488) discovered a lack of high accretion rate, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the hard X-ray selected Swift/BAT local AGN survey. This was interpreted as radiative pressure driven AGN feedback clearing its immediate vicinity composed of dusty gas (having an effectively low Eddington limit in the order of 0.01-0.1), and governing the level of nuclear obscuration. As we find Eddington-limited accretion and high extinction values among obscured, luminous AGN (quasars) however, it may be that the local X-ray AGN and the distant quasars undergo different feedback mechanisms in clearing their surroundings. In this study, we simply compare the obscuring column density and Eddington ratio values for quasars selected by various methods, including X-ray obscured, optically blue, infrared red/luminous, and submillimeter bright AGN. We find obscured quasars lying on the column density-Eddington ratio diagram previously unoccupied by Ricci et al., suggesting that radiative pressure is insufficient to clear its dusty structure at high luminosity, or that the dust in obscured quasars are more extended than the low luminosity counterparts to become fully transparent. We discuss alternative feedback scenarios that may be more relevant for obscured quasars.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between the total precipitable water vapor in the atmosphere and the moving speed of recent typhoons. This study used ground observation data of air temperature, precipitation, and wind speed from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) as well as total rainfall data and Red-Green-Blue (RGB) composite images from the U.S. Meteorological and Satellite Research Institute and the KMA's Cheollian Satellite 2A (GEO-KOMPSAT-2A). Using the typhoon location and moving speed data provided by the KMA, we compared the moving speeds of typhoon Bavi, Maysak, and Haishen from 2020, typhoon Tapah from 2019, and typhoon Kong-rey from 2018 with the average typhoon speed by latitude. Tapah and Kong-rey moved at average speed with changing latitude, while Bavi and Maysak showed a significant decrease in moving speed between approximately 25°N and 30°N. This is because a water vapor band in the atmosphere in front of these two typhoons induced frontogenesis and prevented their movement. In other words, when the water vapor band generated by the low-level jet causes frontogenesis in front of the moving typhoon, the high pressure area located between the site of frontogenesis and the typhoon develops further, inducing as a blocking effect. Together with the tropical night phenomenon, this slows the typhoon. Bavi and Maysak were accompanied by copious atmospheric water vapor; consequently, a water vapor band along the low-level jet induced frontogenesis. Then, the downdraft of the high pressure between the frontogenesis and the typhoon caused the tropical night phenomenon. Finally, strong winds and heavy rains occurred in succession once the typhoon landed.

  • The MEMS solid propellant thrusters have very low thrust level for applying to the propulsion system of micro/nano satellites or the side jet thruster of smart bombs. In this research, the fabrication possibility of planar type MEMS solid propellant thrusters that have enlarged burning surface area was examined and the safety of the structure of thruster during the firing test was confirmed. The performance of a micro igniter which is the key component of the MEMS solid propellant thruster was estimated by the ANSYS Icepak and evaluated by the experiment. Finally, the thrust was measured by the micro force sensor. The levels of thrust were 300, 600 mN in the case of K=15, 20.
