  • Cryogenic propellant rockets utilize a natural circulation loop of cryogenic fluid to cool the engine inlet temperature before launch. The geometric information about the circulation system, such as length and diameter of the pipes and the heat input to the system, defines the mass flow rate of the natural circulation loop. We performed experiments to verify the natural circulation mass flow rate and compared the results with the analytical results. The comparison of the mass flow rate between experiments and numerical simulations showed a 12% offset. We also included a prediction of the natural circulation flow rate in the low-gravity section and in the acceleration section in the upper stage of the launch vehicle. The oxygen tank should have 100 kPa(a) of pressure in the acceleration section to maintain a high flow rate for the natural circulation loop. In the low-gravity section, there should be an optimal tank pressure that leads to the maximum natural circulation flow rate.

  • Gravity characteristics and Moho undulations are investigated in the Korean peninsula by using satellite gravity data. According to the development of satellite geodesy, gravity potential models which have high accuracy and resolution were released. Using the EIGEN-CGOIC model based on low orbit satellite data such as CHAMP and GRACE, geoid and gravity anomaly were calculated by spherical harmonic analysis. The study area is located at $123^{\circ}\sim132^{\circ}E, 33^{\circ}\sim43^{\circ}$N including Korea. Free-air anomalies, which show the effect of terrain, have the values between $-37\sim724 mgal. After Bouguer correction, the range of simple Bouguer anomalies is $-221\sim246$ mgal. Complete Bouguer anomalies after terrain correction increase from continent to marine. This phenomenon is related rise of Moho discontinuity. The cut-frequency for extraction of Moho undulation was determined by power spectrum analysis, and then 3D inversion modeling was implemented. The mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation of Moho depth undulation are -26, -36, -8, and 4.9 krn, respectively.

  • Objectives: The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of chiropractic treatment and low back exercise on lumbar lordosis angle, gravity line, range of motion, and pain degree of university students who are taking a commuter bus at least 4 hours of round trip. Methods: A group of 15 participants received chiropractic treatment around the lumbar spine region twice per week for 8 weeks. Another group of 15 participants were treated with low back exercise three times per week for 8 weeks. Results: In the present results, both chiropractic treatment and low back exercise did not affect the change of lumbar lordosis. However, chiropractic treatment also significantly improved the range of the lumbar motion, including Flexion, Extension, Right Lateral Flexion and Left Lateral Flexion(p<0.05), and consequently decreased the pain degree. Low back exercise significantly moved the lumbar gravity line to almost normal scale, and improved the range of the lumbar motion, including Flexion, and Right Lateral Flexion (p<0.05), resulting in the reduction of pain degree, although both chiropractic treatment and exercise treatment did not change the lumbar lordosis angle at the statistically significant. Conclusions: From these results, it can be inferred that chiropractic treatment might be beneficial to alleviating the low back pain of the university students using a commuter bus by improving the range of lumbar motion or stabilizing the lumbar gravity line.

  • The method to consider gravity effect on the performance of a condenser is developed, and a simple condenser having 'nU' type two circuits is analyzed. Each circuit has the same length and inlet air-side operational conditions. The only difference between two circuits is the direction of refrigerant flow, which is exactly opposite each other between the upper 'n' type circuit and the lower 'U' type circuit. It is shown that the gravity makes the distribution of refrigerant flow uneven in the two circuits at lower refrigerant flow rates; heat transfer rate also becomes uneven. Moreover, much of the refrigerant exists as liquid state in the circuit having low refrigerant flow rate, which will make the cycle balance unstable in the refrigeration cycle system like a heat pump.

  • Seeds of colored rice generally have high anthocyanin and flavonoid content but some cultivars have low seed germination rate. This defect poses unstable seedling establishment in nursery bed. The seed gravity variations of 10 colored rice varieties and its effect on germination, seed soaking duration and their optimum seeding rates for seedling raising in machine transplanting were investigated in the experiment. Based on seed gravity distribution of the 7 black- and 3 red-colored rice varieties at three levels of seed gravity (1.0<, 1.0~1.06, 1.06>), the black colored seeds such as Josaengheugchal and Sinmyungheugchal had high amount of specific gravity of below 1.0 ranging from 86~ 96%, while they had only 3~13% of seeds in specific gravity above 1.06. Sintoheugmi, Heugjinju, Heugnam, Heugkwang had various mass of seeds, showing 29~44% for specific gravity of below 1.0, 24~39% for 1.0~1.06 and 25~45% for above 1.06. On the other hand, the red colored rice such as Hongjinju, Jeogjinju and Geonkanghongmi had high percentage of specific gravity of above 1.06 with 84~86% while they had only 9~12% of specific gravity below 1.0 similar to Ilmibyeo of noncolored rice. The black colored seed generally showed low germination percentage, slow germination speed and long mean germination time, and low water absorption rate as compared with seed of the red colored rice which was similar to those of Ilmibyeo used as a control cultivar. The black colored seeds took 2~4 days longer seed soaking duration than the red colored rice before germination. This was related to high seed amount of specific gravity below 1.0 in black colored rices. The high amount of seed gravity above 1.06 in the colored rice seeds was positively correlated with percentage of germination, germination speed and mean germination time, ripened grain ratio and water absorption. Seed gravity distribution effect were less pronounced between back- and red- colored seeds in seedling emergence. The black colored rice has slightly lower normal seedling emergence rate than the red colored rice and Ilmibyeo in the seedbed soil due to high percentage of ungerminated seed. Normal seedling emergence rate of the black colored rice in the seedbed was 75.2~82.2% for 10-day old seedling and 85.3~ 90.9% for 30-day old seedling which was lower by 4.5~ 8.0% and 0~3.3%, respectively, than the red colored rice. Based on the normal seedling number per tray of Ilmibyeo for seeding rate of 10-day and 30-day old seedlings, the recommended seeding rate of black colored rice is 200~ 220g seeds for the 10-day old seedling and 110~130g for the 30-day old seedling in transplanting rice while the seeding rate of the red colored rice was 220g seeds for the 10-day old seedling and 130g for the 30-day old seedling.

  • Gravity, magnetic and VLF surveys were conducted to investigat the structural stability and hazards associated with the Ubong landfill in Pohang City, which has been built to dump industrial wastes. In 1994, the collapse of a bank happened in the 6th landfill site due to sudden heavy rain, and a large quantity of waste materials flowed out to the nearby landfill sites, factories and roads. We used $10{\times}10m$ resolution DEM data for gravity reductions. The maximum variation of the terrain effect in the survey area is about 0.5 mgal and the terrain effect is large in the vicinity of bank boundary. The Bouguer gravity anomaly map shows the effect due to the variatino of thickness and type of waste materials. The small negative gravity anomaly increases from the 9th site to the 6th site. The small negative gravity anomaly of the 9th site reflects the relatively shallow dumping depth of average 14.5 m in this site and increased density of waste materials by the repeated stabilization process of soil overlaying. The 6th site is located at the center of the former valley and rainfall and groundwater are expected to flow from south-east to north-west. Therefore, considering the previous accident of mixing waste and bank materials at the north-west boundary of the landfill, there may be some environmental problems of leakage of contaminated water and bank stability. The complex inversion technique using Simulated annealing and Marquardt-Levenberg methods was applied to calculate three-dimensional density distribution from gravity data. In the case of 6th site, it is apparent that the landfill had been dumped in four sectors. However, most part of the 9th site and showed that high magnetic industrial wastes were concentrated in the 6th site. The result of magnetic survey showing low magnetic anomalies along the boundaries of two sites is similar to that of gravity data. The VLF data also reveals four divided sectors in the 6th site, and overall anomaly trend indicates the directio of former valley.

  • Gravity characteristics are investigated in the vicinity of the DASAN scientific station, located at the Svalbard Archipelago, the Arctic using ArcGP data. Boundary effects of free-air gravity anomalies, which appeared generally at the continental margin, are erased after Bouguer correction was applied. Complete Bouguer anomalies produced after terrain correction by GrOPO30 show that gravity anomalies increase from continent to marine. This phenomena seem to be related to the rise of Moho discontinuity. The cut-off frequency of 0.16 was decided after power spectrum analysis and the gravity anomalies were divided into two parts. Residual anomalies in high frequency part show that characteristics of high values along the faults and of low values related to thick sediments in the continent. Characteristic is low values from basement subsidence of continental slope or thick sediments in the marine. The undulation of Moho discontinuity from 3-D inversion modeling show typical characteristics of continental margin that become higher from Svalbard archipelago to Knipovich ridge bordering Eurasian plate.

  • Gravity and magnetic surveys were carried out to investigate the three-dimensional configuration and characteristics of the landfills at Nanjido waste disposal site. For terrain correction and three-dimensional density inversion of gravity data an algorithm, which calculates the gravity effect of a three-dimensional body by using the solid angle method, is developed. This algorithm has been proved to give more accurate terrain correction values for the small survey area having varied topography like Nanjido site as compared with widely used methods such as Hammer's method and multiquadric equation method. Density inversion of gravity anomaly data gives very useful information about the lateral and vertical variation of the landfills, which can be used to discriminate the kinds of wastes. The average density of filled materials appears to be $1.7\;g/cm^3$ which is much higher than the value $(0.8\;g/cm^3)$ estimated by Seoul City. The lateral variation of density shows high correlation with the pattern of ongoing depression of the landfills. The northern region of the landfill no. 1, which shows low density and high depression, is closely associated with the industrial waste and sludge filled area. The magnetic anomaly data provide information about relative concentration of magnetic materials, which is also very useful to investigate characteristics of the fills. Several high positive anomaly regions on the reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly map are appeared to be associated with the industrial waste fills, but certain industrial waste fills show low negative anomalies. This kind of magnetic information can be used in selecting drilling locations over landfills away from buried metal products during the stabilization process.

  • Shipborne gravity data are analyzed to investigate crustal structure under Dok Island and its surrounding seamounts located in border of Ulleung Basin and Oki Bank in the East Sea. Relatively low free-air gravity anomaly compared with the volume of seamounts may be explainable by isostatic compensation. From 1 st to 3rd Dokdo Seamounts, the decrease of free-air and Bouguer gravity anomalies implies the different degree of isostatic compensation, crustal thickness or/and density contrast. 3-D gravity modelling shows that seamounts have the mirror roots for regional Airy isostatic compensation, and from Ulleung Basin to Oki Bank, Moho discontinuity deepens and the density of crust is decreases. The results infer that study area is transitional zone from thin oceanic to thick continental crust. The depth of Moho discontinuity is about 15∼16 km, which may be interpreted as an uplifting of Mantle to shallow depth comparing with other borders of the Ulleung Basin.
