SQUID sensor-based ultra low-field magnetic resonance apparatus with ${\mu}T$-level measurement field requires a strong prepolarization magnetic field ($B_p$) to magnetize its sample and obtain magnetic resonance signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This $B_p$ needs to be ramped down very quickly so that it does not interfere with signal acquisition which must take place before the sample magnetization relaxes off. A MOSFET switch-based $B_p$ coil driver has current ramp-down time ($t_{rd}$) that increases with $B_p$ current, which makes it unsuitable for driving high-field $B_p$ coil made of superconducting material. An energy cycling-type current driver has been developed for such a coil. This driver contains a storage capacitor inside a switch in IGBT-diode bridge configuration, which can manipulate how the capacitor is connected between the $B_p$ coil and its current source. The implemented circuit with 1.2 kV-tolerant devices was capable of driving 32 A current into a thick copper-wire solenoid $B_p$ coil with a 182 mm inner diameter, 0.23 H inductance, and 5.4 mT/A magnetic field-to-current ratio. The measured trd was 7.6 ms with a 160 ${\mu}F$ storage capacitor. trd was dependent only on the inductance of the coil and the capacitance of the driver capacitor. This driver is scalable to significantly higher current of superconducting $B_p$ coils without the $t_{rd}$ becoming unacceptably long with higher $B_p$ current.
Wearable and ubiquitous micro systems will be greatly growing and their related devices should be self-powered in order to avoid the replacement of finite power sources, for example, by scavenging energy from the environment. With ever reducing power requirements of both analog and digital circuits, power scavenging approaches are becoming increasingly realistic. One approach is to drive an electromechanical converter from ambient motion or vibration. Vibration-driven generators based on electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric technologies have been demonstrated. Among various generator types proposed so far, piezoelectric generator possesses considerable potential in micro system. To overcome low mechanical-to- electric energy conversion, the piezoelectric device should activate in resonance mode in response to external vibration. Normally, the external vibration excretes at low frequency ranging 0.1 to 200 Hz, whereas the resonant frequencies of the devices are fixed as constant. Therefore, keeping their resonant mode in varying external vibration can be one of important points in enhancing the conversion efficiency. We investigated the possibility of use of multi-bender type piezoelectric devices. To match the external vibration frequency with the device resonant frequency, the various devices with different resonant frequency were chosen. Under an external vibration acceleration of 0.1G at 120 Hz, the device exhibited a peak-to-peak voltage of 2.8 V and a power of 0.5 mw in resonance mode.

A new Current-Controlled Driving Method that can drive AC PDPs with low voltage and high luminous efficiency for the sustaining period is presented. In this driving method, the voltage source is connected to a storage capacitor and the stored voltage is delivered to the panel through LC resonance. Thus, this driving method can drive the panel with a voltage source as low as about half of the voltage necessary in the conventional driving methods. The discharge current flowing into the AC PDP is limited in this method. Thus, the power consumption for the discharge is reduced and the discharge input power to output luminance efficiency is improved. Experimental results using this driving method showed that we could drive an AC PDP with a voltage source as low as 146V and that high luminous efficiency of 1.33 1m/W can be achieved.
The fluorescence of ethidium bound to DNA, poly[d(A-T)$_2$], and poly[d(G-C)$_2$] at a [ethidium]/[DNA] ratio of 0.005 was quenched by porphyrins when both ethidium and the porphyrins simultaneously bound to the same polynucleotide. The quenching was tested using the "inner sphere" and the "Forster resonance energy transfer" (FRET) models, with the latter found to contribute, at least in part, to the quenching. Meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (TMPyP) exhibited a higher quenching and FRET efficiency than cis-bis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (BMPyP) for all of the tested DNA and polynucleotides, demonstrating that energy transfer efficiency is affected by the number of positive charges of porphyrins.
A highly efficient sustaining driver is proposed for plasma display panels (PDPs). When the PDP is charged and discharged, the proposed sustaining driver employs an address voltage source used in an addressing period. A voltage source is used for fully charging the panel to the sustaining voltage, and an initial inductor current helps the panel discharge to 0 V. The resonance between the panel and an inductor is made by shifting the voltage and current bias level when charging and discharging the panel. As a result, the proposed circuit can reduce power consumption, switching loss, heat dissipation, and production cost. Experimental results of a 42-inch PDP are provided to verify the operation and features of the proposed circuit.
The Stockbridge damper is used to control the aeolian vibration of a overhead transmission line due to the natural wind under a low velocity, between 1 m/s to 7 m/s. The damper model can be simply derived with several design parameters and the location of eigenvalues of design parameters are important to determine the efficiency of energy dissipation by excitation itself with two counterweights. First, the importance of resonance frequencies of Stockbridge damper was reviewed through the analysis of frequency response function of damper system. Then, the best selection of design parameters was investigated with the introduction of objected function that minimize the distance between the calculated eigenvalues and target frequency points. The best choice of design parameters was reviewed using the simulated results from the objective function and the effectiveness of selected design case was discussed at the point view of practical implementation.
The Ultrahigh Vacuum Electron Cyclotron Resonance Chemical Vapor Deposition(UHV-ECRCVD) system whose base pressure is 1${\times}10^{9}$ torr has been constructed. In-situ cleaning prior to the epitaxial growth was carried out at 56$0^{\circ}C$ by ECR generated uniform hydrogen plasma whose density is $10^{10}/cm{3}$. The natural oxide was effectively removed without damage by applying positive DC bias(+10V) to the substrate. RHEED(Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction) analysis has been used to confirm the removal of the surgace oxide and the streaky 2$\times$1 reconstruction of the Si surface, and the suppression of the substrate damage is anaylized by X-TEM(cross-sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy). Surface cleaning technique by ECR hydrogen plasma confirmed good quality epitaxial growth at low temperature.
Nanometer-sized noble metals can trap and guide sunlight for enhanced absorption of light based on surface plasmon that is beneficial for generation of hot electron flows. A pulse of high kinetic energy electrons (1-3 eV), or hot electrons, in metals can be generated after surface exposure to external energy, such as in the absorption of light or in exothermic chemical processes. These energetic electrons are not at thermal equilibrium with the metal atoms. It is highly probable that the correlation between hot electron generation and surface plasmon can offer a new guide for energy conversion systems [1-3]. We show that hot electron flow is generated on the modified gold thin film (<10 nm) of metal-semiconductor (TiO2) Schottky diodes by photon absorption, which is amplified by localized surface plasmon resonance. The short-circuit photocurrent obtained with low energy photons (lower than bandgap of TiO2, ~3.1-3.2 eV) is consistent with Fowler's law, confirming the presence of hot electron flows. The morphology of the metal thin film was modified to a connected gold island structure after heating to 120, 160, 200, and 240$^{\circ}C$. These connected island structures exhibit both a significant increase in hot electron flow and a localized surface plasmon with the peak energy at 550-570 nm, which was separately characterized with UV-Vis [4]. The result indicates a strong correlation between the hot electron flow and localized surface plasmon resonance with possible application in hot electron based solar cells and photodetectors.
