A personal portable type electronic dosimeter using silicon PIN photodiode and small GM tube is recently attracting much attention due to its advantages such as an immediate indication function of dose and dose rate, alerting function, and efficient management of radiation exposure history and dose data. We designed and manufactured a semiconductor radiation detector aimed to directly measure X-ray and v-ray irradiated in silicon PIN photodiode, without using high-priced scintillation materials. Using this semiconductor radiation detector, we developed an active electronic dosimeter, which measures the exposure dose using pulse counting method. In this case, it has a shortcoming of over-evaluating the dose that shows the difference between the dose measured with electronic dosimeter and the dose exposed to the human body in a low energy area. We proposed an energy compensation filter and developed a dose conversion algorithm to make both doses indicated on the detector and exposed to the human body proportional to each other, thus enabling a high-precision dose measurement. In order to prove its reliability in conducting personal dose measurement, crucial for protecting against radiation, the implemented electronic dosimeter was evaluated to successfully meet the IEC's criteria, as the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) conducted test on dose indication accuracy, and linearity, energy and angular dependences.
Gourd seeds were irradiated with the doses of 0-20 Gy to investigate the effect of the low dose $\gamma$-radiation on the early growth and physiological activity. The stimulating effects of the low dose y- radiation on the early growth were not noticeably high, but were increased generally at 4-16 Gy irradiation group. The catalase and peroxidase activity of cotyledon from seeds irradiated with $\gamma$- radiation were increased at 8 Gy irradiation group. The photochemical activity of leaf was noticeably high at 4 Gy irradiation group. The photochemical yield of PSII, estimated as Fv/Fm, decreased with increasing illumination time by 50% after 4 hrs in the control and 8 Gy irradiation group, while Fo slightly increased. However, Fv/Em in the 4 Gy irradiation group decreased by 40% of inhibition, indicating that photoinhibition decreased by the low dose $\gamma$- radiation. Changes in the effective quantum yield of PSII, $\varphi_{PSII}$ and 1/Fo- l/Fm, a measure of the rate constant of excitation trapping by the PSII reaction center, showed similar pattern to Fv/Em. NPQ decreased by 70% after photoinhibitory treatment with showing similar pattern between the control and the irradiation group. These results showed the positive effect of low dose $\gamma$- radiation on the seedling growth and the reduction of photoinhibition in the 4 Gy irradiation group.
Background: To investigate in-vitro antagonistic effect of low-dose liquiritigenin on gemcitabine-induced capillary leak syndrome (CLS) in pancreatic adenocarcinoma via inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated signalling pathways. Materials and Methods: Human pancreatic adenocarcinoma Panc-1 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were pre-treated using low-dose liquiritigenin for 24 h, then added into gemcitabine and incubated for 48 h. Cell viability, apoptosis rate and ROS levels of Panc-1 cells and HUVECs were respectively detected through methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) and flow cytometry. For HUVECs, transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) and transcellular and paracellular leak were measured using transwell assays, then poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1) and metal matrix proteinase-9 (MMP9) activity were assayed via kits, mRNA expressions of p53 and Rac-1 were determined through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR); The expressions of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and PARP-1 were measured via western blotting. Results: Low-dose liquiritigenin exerted no effect on gemcitabine-induced changes of cell viability, apoptosis rate and ROS levels in Panc-1 cells, but for HUVECs, liquiritigenin ($3{\mu}M$) could remarkably elevate gemcitabine-induced decrease of cell viability, transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), pro-MMP9 level and expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 (p<0.01). Meanwhile, it could also significantly decrease gemcitabine-induced increase of transcellular and paracellular leak, ROS level, PARP-1 activity, Act-MMP9 level, mRNA expressions of p53 and Rac-1, expression of PARP-1 and apoptosis rate (p<0.01). Conclusions: Low-dose liquiritigenin exerts an antagonistic effect on gemcitabine-induced leak across HUVECs via inhibiting ROS-mediated signalling pathways, but without affecting gemcitabine-induced Panc-1 cell apoptosis. Therefore, low-dose liquiritigenin might be beneficial to prevent the occurrence of gemcitabine-induced CLS in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
To investigate hormetic effect of low dose ${\gamma}$-ray on the uptake of mineral nutrients in Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. Hekjinju var. Surim and) and radish (Raphanus sativas var. Chung-un), seeds of these plants were irradiated with the dose of 1 to 10 Gy. Germination rate and dry weight were examined at pot experiment in greenhouse. Samples for analysis of mineral nutrient were harvested at 17 days and at 59 days after seedling and were analyzed by ICP. Brassica campestris varieties showed higher germination rate and dry weight production with increasing ${\gamma}$ ray dose. Dry weight of Hekjinju Surim and were 143% and 138% at 10Gy dose. respectively. There was no tendency in germination rate and dry weight production for Raphanus sativas var. Chung-un with ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The pattern of mineral nutrient content of these plants showed ${\gamma}$ or ${\delta}$ type of dose-reaction curve with no siginificant. This investigation suggests that the more results can be required to understand the hormetic effect of low dose ${\gamma}$ ray on the uptake of mineral nutrient for these plants.
Hormesis is a dose-response phenomenon that is characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. This biphasic dose-responses have had a long and extensive history in the fields of chemical toxicology, radiation biology and pharmacology. Hormesis has been found from bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, but hormesis in plants has received relatively little attention. Thus principles, occurrence, factors affecting the expression of hormetic responses, and their mechanisms in plants induced by herbicides are reviewed to provide the potentials for crop enhancement. Bromacil, bromoxynil, chloramben, propachlor, terbacil, EPTC, MSMA, and glyphosate at low doses showed stimulatory response in growth. Subtoxic dose of glyphosate increased sucrose content in sugarcane that is used worldwide in sugarcane production. Low dose of protoporphyrinogen-inhibiting herbicides induced increased pathogen defence, and low dose of triazine herbicides improved nitrogen metabolism and increased protein content in some crops. Further researches on potential benefits and risks of hormesis and its mechanism are needed for application of crop enhancement in agriculture.

To observe the stimulating effects of low dose ${\gamma}$ - radiation on the dormancy breaking and physiological activity, potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) were irradiated at the dose of $0.5{\sim}30$ Gy. Low dose ${\gamma}$ - radiation exhibited promoting effects on the sprouting rate within the range of optimum dose of 1 Gy and 2 Gy and on the sprout length within the range of optimum dose of 2 Gy and 4 Gy. Regardless of storage duration and irradiation doses, the number of sprouts was enhanced. The number of sprouts, which were reserved for 15 days after production (DAP), were significantly increased under 4, 8 and 16 Gy irradiation. The growth of 45 DAP sprouts was extremely stimulated under 4 Gy irradiation accompanying the increase of peroxidase activity in the plantlet. In this study, it was also suggested that the activities of antioxidative enzymes of potato plantlets were not related to the irradiation dose during the plantlet development with the exception of decrease in catalase activity.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the dosimetric difference between intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in head and neck cancer (HNC). The study primarily focuses on low-dose spillage evaluation between these two techniques. Methods: This retrospective study involved 45 patients with HNC. The treatment plans were generated using the IMRT and VMAT techniques for all patients. Dosimetric comparisons were performed in terms of target coverage, organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing, and various parameters, including conformity index, uniformity index, homogeneity index, conformation number, low-dose volumes, and normal tissue integral dose (NTID). Results: No significant (P>0.05) difference in planning target volume coverage (D95%) was observed between IMRT and VMAT plans for supraglottic larynx, hard palate, and tongue cancers. A decrease in dose volumes ranging from 1 Gy to 30 Gy was observed for VMAT plans compared with those for IMRT plans, except for V1Gy and V30Gy for supraglottic larynx cancer and V1Gy for tongue cancer. Moreover, decreases (P<0.05) in NTID were observed for VMAT plans compared with that for IMRT plans in supraglottic larynx (4.50%), hard palate (12.80%), and tongue (7.76%) cancers. In contrast, a slight increase in monitor units for VMAT compared with those for IMRT in supraglottic larynx (0.46%), hard palate (2.54%), and tongue (7.56%) cancers. Conclusions: For advanced-stage HNC, both IMRT and VMAT offer satisfactory clinical plans. VMAT offers a conformal and homogeneous dose distribution with comparable OAR sparing and higher dose falloff outside the target volume than IMRT, which provides an edge to reduce the risk of secondary malignancies for HNC over IMRT.

Purpose: To evaluate the results of absorbed and effective doses using two different modes, standard mode (A-mode) and low-dose mode (B-mode) settings for prostate cancer IGRT from CBCT. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was obtained using Clinac iX integrated with On Board Imager (OBI) System and CBCT. CT images were obtained using a GE Light Speed scanner. Absorbed dose to organs from ICRP recommendations and effective doses to body was performed using A-mode and B-mode CBCT. Measurements were performed using a Anderson rando phantom with TLD-100 (Thermoluminescent dosimeters). TLD-100 were widely used to estimate absorbed dose and effective dose from CBCT with TLD System 4000 HAWSHAW. TLD-100 were calibrated to know sensitivity values using photon beam. The measurements were repeated three times for prostate center. Then, Evaluations of effective dose and absorbed dose were performed among the A-mode and B-mode CBCT. Results: The prostate absorbed dose from A-mode and B mode CBCT were 5.5 cGy 1.1 cGy per scan. Respectively Effective doses to body from A mode and B-mode CBCT were 19.1 mSv, 4.4 mSv per scan. Effective dose from A-mode CBCT were approximately 4 times lower than B-mode CBCT. Conclusion: We have shown that it is possible to reduce the effective dose considerably by low dose mode(B-mode) or lower mAs CBCT settings for prostate cancer IGRT. Therefore, we should try to select B-mode or low condition setting to decrease extra patient dose during the IGRT for prostate cancer as possible.

To observe the stimulating effect of low dose ${\gamma}$ radiation on the dormancy breaking and growth, microtubers of two potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima and cv. Superior) were irradiated at the dose of 0.5-30 Gy. Though it varied with cultivars and storage duration, sprouting rate, plant growth and tuber yield were promoted by 2-8 Gy irradiation in microtuber of 'Dejima' stored at low temperature. On the other hand, in microtuber of 'Superior', sprouting rate was promoted by 2 and 4 Gy irradiation, and the growth and tuber yield by 4 Gy irradiation. These results suggest that low dose of ${\gamma}$ radiation could have stimulating effects on the dormancy breaking of microtuber and potato growth.
