  • Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed for Alloy 690 and 316 SS in a simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) environment. Alloy 690 showed about twice longer LCF life than 316 SS at the test condition of 0.4% amplitude at strain rate of 0.004%/s. Observation of the oxide layers formed on the fatigue crack surface showed that Cr and Ni rich oxide was formed for Alloy 690, while Fe and Cr rich oxide for 316 SS as an inner layer. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the oxide layers formed on the LCF crack surface of Alloy 690 had higher impedance and less defect density than those of 316 SS, which resulted in longer LCF life of Alloy 690 than 316 SS in a simulated PWR environment.

  • This work is concerned with an evaluation of dynamic boric acid corrosion (BAC) of low alloy steel for reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Mockup test method was newly established to investigate dynamic BAC of the low alloy steel under various conditions simulating a primary water leakage incident. The average corrosion rate was measured from the weight loss of the low alloy steel specimen, and the maximum corrosion rate was obtained by the surface profilometry after the mockup test. The corrosion rates increased with the rise of the leakage rate of the primary water containing boric acid, and the presence of oxygen dissolved in the primary water also accelerated the corrosion. From the specimen surface analysis, it was found that typical flow-accelerated corrosion and jet-impingement occurred under two-phase fluid of water droplet and steam environment. The maximum corrosion rate was determined as 5.97 mm/year at the leakage rate of 20 cc/min of the primary water with a saturated content of oxygen within the range of experimental condition of this work.

  • High-strength low-alloy steel is one of the widely used materials in onshore and offshore plant engineering. We investigated the alloying effect of solute atoms in α-Fe based alloy using ab initio calculations. Empirical equations were used to establish the effect of alloying on the Vicker's hardness, screw energy coefficient, and edge dislocation energy coefficient of the steel. Screw and edge energy coefficients were improved by the addition of V and Cr solute atoms. In addition, the addition of trace quantities of V, Cr, and Mn enhanced abrasion resistance. Solute atoms and contents with excellent mechanical properties were selected and their thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior were investigated. The addition of Cr atom is expected to form alloys with low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient. This study provides a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research in low-alloy steel and can be used to guide researchers to explore and develop α-Fe based alloys with improved properties, that can be fabricated in smart and cost-effective manners.

  • This study examined how varying tempering temperatures affect the susceptibility of Cr-Mo low alloy steels to hydrogen embrittlement. A slow strain-rate test (SSRT) was carried out on the steels electrochemically pre-charged with hydrogen in order to examine the hydrogen embrittlement behavior. The results showed that the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the Cr-Mo low alloy steels improved with increasing tempering temperature. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) revealed that diffusible hydrogen content decreased with increasing tempering temperature, accompanied by a slight increase in the peak temperature. This decrease in hydrogen content was likely due to a reduction in dislocation density which served as reversible hydrogen trap sites. These findings underline the significant role of tempering temperature in enhancing the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steels.

  • Alloy 617 is the one of the leading candidate materials for intermediate heat exchangers(IHX) of a very high temperature reactor(VHTR) system. Some of the components are joined by many welding techniques and therefore the welded joints are inevitable in the construction of systems. In the present paper, the low cycle fatigue(LCF) behaviors of Alloy 617 base metal(BM) and the gas tungsten arc welded (GTAWed) weld joints(WJ) are investigated experimentally under strain controlled LCF tests. Fully axial total-strain controlled tests have been conducted at room temperature with total strain ranges of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5%. The weld joints have shown a lower fatigue lives compared with base metals at all the testing conditions. The weld joints have shown a higher cyclic stress response behavior than base metal. Both BM and WJ exhibited cyclic strain hardening behavior, depending on the total strain range. In addition, the strain-life parameters for BM and WJ were determined, based on Coffin-Manson equations.

  • This study conducts numerical simulations of Isotropic conductive adhesives using low melting point alloy fillers during the reflow process. The CIP method and predictor-corrector method are used to simulate more accurately on free surface flow of low melting point alloy fillers. For finding out optical conditions to obtain reliable conduction paths, the present study conducts extensive numerical simulations.

  • This work aims to investigate on the low cycle fatigue life assessment, which is adopted on the strain-life relationship, or better known as the Coffin-Manson relationship, and also the strain energy density-based model. The low cycle fatigue test results of Alloy 617 weldments under $900^{\circ}C$ have been statistically estimated through the Coffin-Manson relationship according to the provided strain profile. In addition, the strain energy density-based model is proposed to represent the energy dissipated per cycle as fatigue damage parameter. Based on the results, Alloy 617 weldments followed the Coffin-Manson relationship and strain energy density-based model well, and they were compatible with the experimental data. The predicted lives based on these two proposed models were examined with the experimental data to select a proper life prediction parameter.

  • In the present study, we investigate the effects of long-term heat treatment at elevated temperatures on the mechanical softening of the Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel. The influence of long-term heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical strength was evaluated. To simulate the long-term material degradation, heat treatment test was interrupted at several stages up to 10,000 hours in an electric furnace. The Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel shows a typical bainitic phase, which consists of a well-developed lath substructure with fine precipitates along the lath boundaries. However, these fine precipitates were redissolved into the matrix with long-term heat treatment, and then the lath substructures were recovered. Consequently, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength decreased during long-term heat treatment showing a mechanical softening phenomenon.

  • The effects of boron additions in steels have long been recognized as very important, mainly with respect to hardnability of heat treatable steels. The systematics of structure and properties of boron steels will then be illustrated in the context of low-alloy steels with carbon contents raging from 0.05 to 0.25% and boron contents 0-130 ppm. we investigated the effect of the microstructure and mechanical properties with heat treatment condition of the boron-treated(0.0013 ppm) low carbon(0.2 %C) low alloy steel. The specimens were austenitised for 5 and 10, 15 min at $880{\sim}940^{\circ}C$(with/without tempered at 150, 180 and $210^{\circ}C$ for the various periods of time from 60 min to 120 min) After heat treatment, mechanical properties were measured by tensile test and hardness test. For analysis of microstructure, Optical/SEM analysis and XRD were carried out.
