  • In this paper, an adaptive cosine transform coding scheme which incorporate human visual properties into the coding scheme is investigated. Human vision is relatively sensitive to mid-frequency band, and insensitive to very low and very high frequency band. These property was mathematically modelled with MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) through many psychovisual experiment. DCT transforms energy in spatial domain into frequency domain, so can exploit the MTF very efficiently. Another well-known visual characteristics is spatial masking effect that visibility of noise is less in regions of high activity than in regions of low activity. Proposed coding scheme imploys quantization matrix which represent the properties of these spatial frequency response of human vision, and adaptively quality of an image. To compute the activity index of an image block, simple operation is performed in spatial domain, and according to activity index. block of low activity region is more exactly quantized relatively than that of high activity region. Results showed that, at low bit rate, the subjective quality of the reconstructed images by proposed coding scheme is acceptible than that of coding scheme without HVS properties.

  • To develop a material for functional food, the fraction Ⅰ,II and Ⅲ of onion extract were separated by Sephadex LH-20 column. The revealed purification levels of each fraction were 5.2%-6.5%, 12.2%-14.5% and 82.6%-86.7%, respectively. A functional activity test was performed with fraction Ⅲ. The ACE inhibition activity was about 50% at 5mg and about 80% at 10mg. The XOase inhibition activity of Korean Changnyong Daego was 84%, which was the highest. At the experiment of tyrosinase inhibition was detected 21-36% at 10mg. The cholesterol dose in mice blood was as low as low as 79$\pm$5(mg/100 mL) after the intake of fraction Ⅲ. Cholestrol dose in liver was decreased to below 50%. The results show that Sephadex LH-20 column method was very useful as a fraction method for the development of functional food material nsing onions.

  • This study was focused on the catalytic activity for the combustion of low-concentration methane using various commerical catalysts (six transition metal catalysts in Russia and one rare earth metal (Honeycomb) catalyst in Korea). Catalytic activity was strongly influenced by the type and loading content of metal supported in catalyst. Catalytic performance showed the highest activity in Honeycomb catalyst including rare earth metal, which was the most expensive catalyst, while the next was the catalyst supported Cu with high content (AOK-78-52) and also that supported Cr and Co (AOK-78-56). However, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts that were very cheap had lower activation energy than Honeycomb catalyst. In the economical field, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts with transition metals showed a good alternative catalyst on the combustion of methane.

  • The antioxidative effect of mugwort extracts was measured by DPPH and LDL with four different solutions (70% acetone, ethanol, hot water, cold water). Mugwort extracts contained 3.2% of polyphenol, 380 RE/l00 g of vitamin A, 16.2 mg/100 g of vitamin C, and 5.1 ${\alpha}$-TE/100 g of vitamin E. DPPH revealed the effect in the order of 70% acetone, hot water, ethanol, and cold water. In particular, 70% acetone showed outstandingly stronger activity than the control group. Also, when 10 ${\mu}\ell$ was added, the effect was well noticed. But the antioxidative activity was hardly seen at 15 ${\mu}\ell$. LDL exhibited the same order of strength in proportion to mugwort's concentration. Against the control group, the activity of 70% acetone was 7 times, hot water and ethanol 6 times, and cold water 2 times. This result is attributable to the antioxidative increase of polyphenol and antioxidative vitamins.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate differences in pain, pain interference, and fatigue, according to the level of physical activity in the elderly with chronic pain. Methods: Data were collected between January and March 2011 from 116 elders with chronic pain living in community settings. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program for descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA and ANCOVA. The reliability of the instruments was tested with Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient, which ranged from .91 to .93. Results: The results were as follows. The mean total physical activity was 2287.4 MET-min/week, and 41.4% of the investigated subjects were classified into the low physical activity group. After adjusting for age and sex, the moderate and high physical activity groups were significantly lower in pain (F=6.33, p=.002), pain interference (F=11.57, p<.001), and fatigue (F=3.16, p=.046) than the low physical activity group. Conclusion: Results from this study suggest that the level of physical activity can influence pain, pain interference and fatigue. Therefore, incorporating more physical activities into daily routines, inactive elderly individuals may improve their pain, pain interference and fatigue.

  • In this study, the antibacterial activity of major compounds obtained from domestic plant essential oils was investigated against four species of fish pathogenic bacteria, namely, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio harveyi, Streptococcus iniae, and Streptococcus parauberis. We observed that α-terpineol and eucalyptol showed high antibacterial activity against S. iniae, whereas α-terpineol and β-linalool showed high antibacterial activity against S. parauberis. The antibacterial activity of eucalyptol and β-linalool was significantly high against E. tarda, and α-terpineol and β-linalool exerted antibacterial activity against V. harveyi. All compounds showing significant antibacterial activity also exhibited high solubility in water (≥1,000 mg/L). In contrast, compounds such as α-limonene and α-pinene with low water solubility showed significantly low antibacterial activity against all bacteria. These findings can be utilized further to estimate the antibacterial activity of compounds isolated from plant essential oils for the prevention of fish disease.

  • The purposes of this study was to evaluate the effect of low power GaAsAl laser on tissue contraction in a linear incision wound on rat skin. The linear incision wound was made on the midline of the backside in the experimental animals. Low power laser applications with different intensities such as 3, 6, or 10 mW were applied to the experimental animals twice a day for 10 days. On either the seventh or tenth postoperative day, the quantitative analysis of the inflammatory reaction surrounding the linear incision wounds on the rats were performed using enzymatical analysis of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. The number of neutrophil was $.07-1.0{\times}106/m{\ell}$ from a normal blood sample that was obtained from the normal experimental animals. Each concentration of neutrophil showed .04-.62 unit activity of MPO. Therefore, the 6 unit activity of MPO per neutrophil was $.57{\pm}.014{\times}10^{-6}$ unit. On the 7th and 10th post operative day, non treated tissues demonstrated increased MPO activity as compared to that of normal tissue. These data indicated that the inflammatory reaction of tissue was induced after wound induction and the MPO activity were increased in the inflammed tissues. While both 3 mW or 6 mW intensity of laser treatments did not affect the tissue MPO activity, 10 mW intensity of laser treatment significantly decreased the tissue MPO activity on the 7th and 10th post operative day. These data demonstrated that only 10 mW intensity of laser treatment successfully suppressed tissue inflammatory reaction after wound induction. In conclusion, these findings suggested that 10 mW of GaAIAs laser treatments effectively suppressed the inflammatory reaction of tissue that was induced during the wound healing process.

  • Two slaughter experiments were conducted to determine the effects of rumen escape starch, by altering dietary starch concentration and corn particle size, on ${\alpha}$-amylase activity in the pancreas and the small intestinal digesta of lambs. In experiment 1, 18 wether lambs (28.5${\pm}$1.6 kg) were fed low, medium or high starch diets for 35 d and slaughtered. Dietary starch concentrations linearly increased rumen escape starch (p<0.05). Pancreatic ${\alpha}$-amylase activity was lower (p<0.05) in lambs fed the low starch diet. When expressed per gram of digesta, ${\alpha}$-amylase activity was lower in lambs fed the low starch diet. However, expressed as total activity, ${\alpha}$-amylase in the digesta was greater in lambs fed the medium starch diet. In experiment 2, 12 wether lambs (23.5${\pm}$0.3 kg) were fed diets with finely cracked corn, coarsely cracked corn and whole corn. These dietary treatments continued for 35 d before tissue collection. Rumen escape starch increased with increasing corn particle size (p<0.05). ${\alpha}$-amylase activity in the pancreas and the small intestinal digesta was significantly greater (p<0.05) in lambs fed the coarsely cracked corn. These data suggest that increasing rumen escape starch results in a quadratic increase in total ${\alpha}$-amylase activity in the pancreas and the small intestinal digesta. Maximum ${\alpha}$-amylase activity is reached when rumen escape starch is about 100-120 g/d in 25-30 kg lambs.

  • Beef loaves(5${\times}5{\times}$5cm) were cooked by conventional moist-heat and by various levels of microwaves. The mean internal temperature of the meats cooked by low power microwaves for 5~15 min were not significantly different from the conventionally boiled meats for 30 min. When cooking was made by microwaves at low level for 5~10 min, or at high level for 2 min and additional heating at low power level for 5min, the percent cooking loss were comparable with the samples cooked conventionally for 20~40 min. General proteolytic activity determined with azocoll indicated that enzyme activity decreased as internal temperature increased(r=-0.5779, p<0.05), and maximum activity occured at meats conventionally moist-heated for 10 min and by low power microwave for 5 min. Sensory scores for tenderness were high at conventional moist-heat for 30 min, for 20 min, microwave cooked at thatwing power for 10 min and at low power level for 10 min, in descending order. There were no significant differences in the thiamin content of meats after various treatments.
