  • As a series of 'Performance Assessment of Building Envelopes I: Double Skin Facade', three types (interior, exterior, mixed (int.&ext.)) of lightshelves and RetroLux were examined in terms of $CO_2$ emissions. It is shown that the exterior lightshelf could achieve the most energy savings (9.6-38.7%) in general office buildings due to blocking solar radiation before entering the indoor space. However, the interior lightshelf is the worst (1.4-5.2%) among three of them. The RetroLux has two components: (1) sun-reflector (first louver component), (2) light shelf for improving daylight induction (second louver component). Due to these two components, solar radiation from windows is filtered depending on seasonal variation (solar altitude). Therefore, the RetroLux can reduce 18.0-27.9% of annual energy consumption (both cooling and heating), and $552-3,290Won/m^2{\cdot}yr$ of operation cost is saved.

  • The new shape of louver-fin has been applied to a parallel flow condenser to enhance air-side heat transfer rate lot an automotive air-conditioner R- l34a is employed as a refrigerant inside the flat tube of the condenser, This problem is of particular interest in reducing the geometric size of the automotive air conditioner The effect of air flow rate on pressure drop as well as heat transfer in air side are studied in detail. Comparison of the performance is also made with that of a conventional parallel flow condenser, which is available in the market. The results obtained indicate that the total pressure drop through the pre sent condenser is not changed, while the heat transfer rate is increased by 24% at high veto city of air flow, compared with those of the conventional condenser. The parallel flow condenser with a new shape of louver-fin could be reduced in size by 20% for the equivalent condenser capacity, compared with the conventional parallel flow condenser.

  • The effect of inclination angle on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the brazed aluminum heat exchangers is experimentally investigated. Three samples having different fin pitches(1.25, 1.5 and 2.0 mm) were tested. Results show that heat transfer coefficient is not affected by the inclination angle. However, the friction factor increases as the inclination angle increases with negligible difference between the forward and backward inclination. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor are the smallest at $F_p=1.5mm$, followed by $F_p=2.0mm$ and 1.25mm. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver layout. Comparison with existing correlations is also made.

  • To protect the turbine blade, many cooling techniques has developed. With all other things, film-cooling has been widely used as the important alternative. In the present work, numerical analysis has been performed to investigate and to compare the film-cooling performance of various film-cooling hole schemes such as cylindrical, crescent, louver, and dumbbell holes. To analyze the turbulent flow and the film-cooling mechanism, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis has been performed with shear stress transport turbulence model. The validation of numerical results has been assessed in comparison with experimental data. The characteristics of fluid flow and the film-cooling performance for each shaped hole have been investigated and evaluated in terms of centerline, laterally averaged and spatially averaged film-cooling effectivenesses. The dumbbell shaped hole shows better film-cooling effectiveness than other shaped holes. And the louver and cylindrical shaped hole shows lower one, and concentrated flow on centerline only.

  • This study presents the experimental study on improvement of frost/defrost performance in an heat pump system with newly developed fin and multiple compressors. As multiple compressors system, the variable and single speed compressor combinations has been introduced and compared with single speed 1-compressor system in a view point of improvement of frost/defrost performance. Also, newly developed corrugate shaped fin has been compared with conventional louver shaped fin. The frost/defrost performance is defined and some parameters are compared to discuss the effect of each combination. From this experimental study, it is known that if the variable and single speed compressor combination system equipped with corrugate shaped fin, the system performance has greatly improved not only for heating capacity, but also for frost performance.

  • In this paper, reentering ratio and cooling capacity of individual cooling towers arrayed on a building roof were studied by a numerical method. The number of 16 cooling towers were divided into 4 banks. It was considered the summer prevailing wind characteristics as west wind and south wind of 5 m/s. It was also considered the roofwall types as the curtainwall and the louverwall that had the outdoor air intake louver in the curtainwall. In this case, the louver was suggested as the solution that could prevent reentering phenomenon due to recirculation and interference of the discharge air. In the case of the curtainwall, the averaged reentering ratio are predicted 13.3% and 24.4% for the west and south wind of 5 m/s, respectively. In the case of the louverwall, the averaged reentering ratio are predicted 2.5% and 9.7% for the west and south wind of 5 m/s, respectively. Therefore, the louverwall is a appropriate solution for reducing the reentering phenomenon.

  • Privacy films are typically manufactured by combining black resin and transparent louver-shaped patterns. The use of black resin results in excellent light-shielding. However, black resin can reduce the transmittance of privacy films at the front viewing angle. In this study, we applied $SiO_2/SiON$ multi-layer thin films on a privacy film to maintain transmittance at the front viewing angle and improve light-shielding at the side viewing angle. We determined the optimum combination of thicknesses of the $SiO_2/SiON$ multi-layer stacks to increase the overall transmittance; the light shielding could be maximized at the side viewing angle.

  • This paper presents the numerical model development of a microchannel heat exchanger in mobile air-conditioning and heat pump applications. The model has been developed based on the effectiveness-NTU method using a segment-by-segment modeling approach. State-of-art correlations are used for refrigerant- and air-side heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. The calculated heat condenser capacities are in good agreement with experimental data, with an average difference of 1.86%. The current model can be used for microchannel condenser simulations under various operating conditions. It is anticipated to improve productivity in designing and optimizing microchannel heat exchangers with folded louver fin geometry.

  • In the present study, a tunnel type soundproof wall with partial opening is proposed to reduce the environmental noise caused by railway vehicles traveling on bridges, which affects residents of high-rise apartment buildings; the study also attempts to minimize load due to wind and the weight of the wall. Applying the principles of computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, and the ray tracing method, a reduction in noise as well as of the overall weight of the soundproof walls is estimated. Analysis results show that the proposed soundproof wall with a partial opening weighs less, while reducing the wind loading by up to 30%. To prevent direct propagation of sound through openings in the wall, an acoustic louver, which is a type of silencer, could be considered for the opening. In order to achieve a similar noise effect with existing insulation material, the fluid flow and the insulation effect of the acoustic louver are analyzed. As the considered opening is in the range of 30~40% of the total length of the soundproof wall, the noise effect and wind load are reduced by 10dB and 25% respectively. Consequently, opening some part of tunnel type soundproof walls and installing louvers on the wall openings can have the effects of weight-reduction and reduced wind load. If a partial opening is applied with proper sound material application, a gain of an additional 5~10dB of noise reduction can be achieved.
