  • The coaxial magnetic gear with the flux concentrating structure is known that it has the torque performance advantage over the coaxial magnetic gear having surface mounted permanent magnet, thanks to the flux focusing effect. But, if the solid cores are used in the modulating pieces and rotor cores to consider the mechanical reliability and cost reduction, the operating torque of the flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gear can be significantly diminished because the iron losses at the solid cores affect the actual transmitted torque. Furthermore, the modulating pieces and rotor cores have different characteristics of the iron losses from one another, because the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density, which cause the iron losses, are different. Thus, in this paper, we focused on the analysis of the characteristics of the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density and resultant eddy current losses in the surface mounted PM and flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gears, when these coaxial magnetic gears have the solid cores at the modulating pieces and rotor cores. The characteristics of pull-out torque (static torque), operating torque (dynamic torque), and efficiency are also researched, and compared by the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment.

  • The growing size and complex process in construction project recently leads to increase risk and the losses as well. Even though researchers have identified the major risk indicators, there is lack of comprehensive and quantitative research for identifying the relationship between the risk indicators and economic losses associated with construction projects. To address this shortage of research, this study defines risk indicators and create a framework to assess the influence of economic losses from the indicators. An insurance company's claim payout record was accepted as the dependent variable to reflect the real economic losses. Based on the claims, we categorized the causes and results of accidents. To establish framework, built environment vulnerability indicators and geographical vulnerability indicators were employed as the risk indicators. A Pearson correlation analysis was adopted to validate the relationship with loss ratio and risk indicators. Consequently, this framework and its results may offer significant references for under writers of insurance companies and loss prevention activities.

  • Piston-cylinder system are widely used in power engineering applications. In reciprocating refrigeration compressors, where extremely low friction losses are required, ringless pistons are being used to diminish the friction between piston rings and cylinder wall. Since the ringless piston has the freedom of lateral motion there is a potential danger that it will occasionally hit the cylinder wall while moving up and down along it's axis. A good design must therefore provide a smooth and stable reciprocating motion of the piston and ensure that the fluid film separating the piston from the cylinder wall is maintained all times. And the compromise between refrigerant gas leakage through the piston-cylinder clearance and the friction losses is required utilizing a dynamic analysis of the secondary motion for the high efficiency compressor. To this end, the computer program is developed for calculating the entire piston trajectory and the lubrication characteristics as functions of crank angle under compressor running conditions. The results explored the effects of some design parameters and operating conditions on the stability of the piston, the oil leakage, and friction losses.

  • This paper is proposed an efficiency optimization control algorithm for a synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM) which minimizes the copper and iron losses. Also, this paper presents a speed estimated control scheme of SynRM using artificial neural network(ANN). There exists a variety of combinations of d and q-axis current which provide a specific motor torque. The objective of the efficiency optimization controller is to seek a combination of d and q-axis current components, which provides minimum losses at a certain operating point in steady state. It is shown that the current components which directly govern the torque production have been very well regulated by the efficiency optimization control scheme. The proposed algorithm allows the electromagnetic losses in variable speed and torque drives to be reduced while keeping good torque control dynamics. The control performance of ANN is evaluated by analysis for various operating conditions. Analysis results are presented to show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • When HTS tapes are used in power application, they are used by winding form, such as, a pancake and a solenoid. When AC current is applied to the coil, Ac magnetic field is generated in winding. This AC magnetic field acts as an external magnetic field and makes loss. In this paper the radial magnetic field component ($B_r$) and the axial magnetic field component ($B_z$) in a pancake and a solenoid were calculated by numerical analysis method and compare with measured value. AC losses of a short sample were calculated by Norris equation and n numerical analysis based on Brandt equation. AC losses of the pancake coil and the solenoid coil were also calculated.

  • This paper deals with the generating characteristic analysis of permanent magnet (PM) machines with multi-pole rotor and 3-phase stator windings considering losses such as copper loss, iron loss and mechanical loss. First, using d-q transformation, dynamic equations of PM machines are established. And then, characteristic equations for losses, power and efficiency are also derived. On the basis of d-q dynamic equations and characteristic equations, dynamic simulation algorithm is achieved by the MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results are validated extensively by finite element (FE) analyses.

  • This study analyzes a ladder multilevel converter (double ladder topology) with the use of a new averaging modeling technique. This technique introduces an analytical method to compute for the switching losses and is used to conduct an in-depth analysis of the influence of the switching frequency and parasitic resistance of components on converter efficiency. The obtained results enable the selection of switches and switching frequency to minimize losses. Moreover, simulation results and experimental measurements validate the analytical calculations.

  • A cycle analysis is performed to investigate how the non-ideal gas behavior of helium reduces the heating capacity of VM heat pumps. Since the operating pressures of VM heat pumps are as high as 1 to 20 MPa, the compressibility factor of helium becomes clearly greater than 1 and the non-ideal behavior always represents a thermal loss in heating. To calculate the amount of the losses, an adiabatic cycle analysis is performed with the real properties of helium and the net enthaply flows through the two regenerators are numerically obtained. It is shown that the non-ideal gas losses could be as much as 8% in the heating capacity when the operating pressures are greater than 10MPa. The effects of the operating temperatures and the dead volumes on the loss are presented.

  • AC loss is one of the important parameters in HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) AC devices. Among the HTS AC power devices, the transformer is the essential part in the electrical power system. But unfortunately, the transformer is the worst HTS device concerning AC loss because of very large magnetization loss due to high magnetic field applied to the HTS wire. We calculated the magnetization losses in HTS pancake windings for transformer according to the operating temperature. Two kinds of arrangement of HTS pancake windings were adopted for calculation of AC losses of a shell type transformer, and the analysis results were presented and discussed.

  • In this paper, optimal stator slot shape of 3-phase inverter-fed induction motor is designed to reduce stator core and winding losses. For the analysis, the F.E.M on 1 phase band periodic condition in stator is coupled with harmonic equivalent circuit. For the optimal design, the conjugate gradient method is used as an optimizing algorithm. The stator core and winding losses are reduced by the design method. The results are verified by those of the time-step finite element analysis.
