  • In this paper, a soft-switching scheme for the PWM interleaved buck converter(IBC) is newly proposed to obtain the advantages of both the conventional PWM interleaved buck and resonant converters such as ease of control, reduced switching losses and stresses, and low EMI. To obtain the soft-switching action, the proposed scheme employs an auxiliary circuit, which is added to the conventional interleaved buck converter and used to achieve soft-switching for both the main switches and the output diodes while not incurring any additional losses due to the auxiliary circuit itself. In this paper, the basic operations are discussed and design guidelines are presented. And through the experimental results, the usefulness of the proposed converter is verified.

  • This study analyzes a ladder multilevel converter (double ladder topology) with the use of a new averaging modeling technique. This technique introduces an analytical method to compute for the switching losses and is used to conduct an in-depth analysis of the influence of the switching frequency and parasitic resistance of components on converter efficiency. The obtained results enable the selection of switches and switching frequency to minimize losses. Moreover, simulation results and experimental measurements validate the analytical calculations.

  • The dielectric constants and dielectric losses of ZrTiO$_4$thin films deposited by DC magnetron reactive sputtering were investigated. The paraelectric properties were measured in the 100kHz range. As the deposition temperature increased (up to 67$0^{\circ}C$), the dielectric losses (tan$\delta$) decreased (down to 0.017$\pm$0.007), while the dielectric constants ($\varepsilon$) were in the range of 35$\pm$7. Post annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$ in oxygen for 2h reduced tan$\delta$ down to 0.005$\pm$0.001, higher than those of well-sintered bulk ZrTiO$_4$.

  • An anolmalous magnetoresistance effect has been theoretically studied at very low temperatures for composite normal metal conductors. This anomalous behavior is due to transverse Hall currents in the composite which would result in increased losses and higher effective resistance for the composite conductor. In this paper, transverse current flow and effective resistance with Cu-Al conductor configuration were analyzed using FEM(finite element method) for predicting the Hall losses to be resulted in anomalous magnetoresistance effect. And they are plotted three dimensionally to be visualized.

  • A cycle analysis is performed to investigate how the non-ideal gas behavior of helium reduces the heating capacity of VM heat pumps. Since the operating pressures of VM heat pumps are as high as 1 to 20 MPa, the compressibility factor of helium becomes clearly greater than 1 and the non-ideal behavior always represents a thermal loss in heating. To calculate the amount of the losses, an adiabatic cycle analysis is performed with the real properties of helium and the net enthaply flows through the two regenerators are numerically obtained. It is shown that the non-ideal gas losses could be as much as 8% in the heating capacity when the operating pressures are greater than 10MPa. The effects of the operating temperatures and the dead volumes on the loss are presented.

  • Performance of a VM heat pump is considerably affected by various losses, such as enthalpy dump, reheat loss, pumping loss, conduction loss and shuttle loss. A second-order analysis model of VM heat pumps, which allows consideration of the major losses, was presented. Actual heat transfer rates for heat exchangers were calculated from the heat transfer rates obtained by the adiabatic analysis and various losses. New effective temperatures of heat exchangers were calculated from the actual heat transfer rates and the mean heat transfer coefficients until there was no appreciable change in the effective temperatures. Effects of design parameters, such as phase angle, swept volume ratio, regenerator length and speed on heating capacity, cooling capacity and COP were shown.

  • AC loss is one of the important parameters in HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) AC devices. Among the HTS AC power devices, the transformer is the essential part in the electrical power system. But unfortunately, the transformer is the worst HTS device concerning AC loss because of very large magnetization loss due to high magnetic field applied to the HTS wire. We calculated the magnetization losses in HTS pancake windings for transformer according to the operating temperature. Two kinds of arrangement of HTS pancake windings were adopted for calculation of AC losses of a shell type transformer, and the analysis results were presented and discussed.

  • A new soft switching technique that improves performance of the high power factor boost rectifier by reducing switching losses is introduced. The losses are reduced by air active snubber which consists of an inductor, a capacitor a rectifier, and an auxiliary switch. Since the boost switch turns off with zero current, this technique is well suited for implementations with insulated gate bipolar transistors. The reverse recovery related losses of the rectifier are also reduced by the snubber inductor which is connected in series with the boost switch and the boost rectifier. In addition, the auxiliary switch operates with zero voltage switching. A complete design procedure and extensive performance evaluation of the proposed active snubber using a 1.2[kW] high power factor boost rectifier operating from a $90[V_{rms}]$ input are also presented.

  • Propagation losses including bath transmission losses and bending losses of the flexible dielectric tube waveguide using commercial polymer substances for a short distance millimeter wave transmission are analytically predicted. The transmission loss and the bending loss are strongly dependent on the power flow distributions in each region. The obtained propagation tosses are compared with those of the commercial metal rigid and flexible waveguides.

  • This paper presents the analysis and optimization of air-core permanent magnet linear synchronous motor with overlapping concentrated windings to achieve high thrust density, high thrust per copper losses and low thrust ripple. For the motor design, we adopt equivalent magnetizing current (EMC) method to analyze the magnetic field and give analytical formulae for calculation of motor parameters such as no-load back EMF, dynamic force, thrust density and thrust per copper losses. Further, we proposed a multi-objective optimization by genetic algorithm to search for the optimum parameters. The design optimization is verified by 2-D Finite Element analysis (FEA).
