  • In this paper, the equalization for frequency slope of path loss in Multi-Band(MB) OFDM UWB is proposed. The path loss of a signal is proportionate to the square of the signal's frequency. So, the received signal amplitudes of OFDM subcarrier can be different up to 3dB when MB-OFDM occupies bandwidth over 1.5GHz. The differences of subcarrier-amplitudes make an effective of 0.3 bit reduction of soft decision bits of viterbi decoder, and when the effective of 0.3 bit reduction can cause 0.5dB SNR degradation. This paper proposes two modem architectures which compensate for the degraded subcarrier by multiplying the reciprocal of degraded values in analog or digital domain. It is shown that, for the proposed architecture applied to MB-OFDM UWB, the performance improvements up to 0.5dB can be obtained over the conventional uncompensated receiver architecture.

  • In this paper, a novel loss minimization of an induction generator in wind energy generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on the flux level reduction, for which the generator d-axis current reference is estimated using support vector regression (SVR). Wind speed is employed as an input of the SVR and the samples of the generator d-axis current reference are used as output to train the SVR algorithm off-line. Data samples for wind speed and d-axis current are collected for the training process, which plots a relation of input and output. The predicted off-line function and the instantaneous wind speed are then used to determine the d-axis current reference. It is shown that the effect of loss minimization is more significant at low wind speed and the loss reduction is about to 40% at 4[m/s] wind speed. The validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results.

  • For improving the heat loss of a refrigerator around door gasket, it is very important to reduce the amount of rubber magnet used, of which thermal conductivity is much higher than the plastics, and enhancing the magnetic properties of rubber magnet itself is crucial for this. In the present study, therefore, a relationship between the optimum conditions of rubber magnet fabrication process and raw material compositions in the ferrite powder/CPE binder compounds was investigated for finding a way to enhance the magnetic properties of rubber magnet. Magnetic attraction forces of a sample rubber magnet was measured as function of distance, and thermal properties of the sample ferrite powder/CPE binder compound were analyzed with TG/DTA thermal analyzer. As a results, a rubber magnet strip with enhanced magnetic properties was expected to be fabricated, of which raw material compound was prepared by compounding with higher ferrite magnetic powder concentration.

  • This paper presents an efficient algorithm for loss reduction and load balancing by sectionalizing switch operation in large scale distribution system of radial type. We use Genetic algorithm and Kruskal algorithm to solve distribution system reconfiguration. Genetic algorithm is used to minimize objective function including loss and load balancing items. Kruskal algorithm is used to satisfy the radial condition of distribution system. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the ability to search a good solution regardless of initial configuration and size of system.

  • In this paper, a soft switching half-bridge converter using secondary switches for output control and conduction loss reduction is proposed. The conventional half-bridge converter must be fixed on duty cycle for soft switching. The proposed converter was consisted of two added switches in series of the secondary rectifier diodes. The main switches with constant duty cycle are operated ZVS. The secondary switches are operated ZV-ZCS. Especially, the primary switches were fixed duty cycle for maximum voltage conversion ratio. Output of converter is controlled by duty cycle or phase-shifted time of secondary switches. The conduction loss of the proposed converter can be reduced by the secondary switches. The operation characteristic, analysis, simulation and experimental results of the proposed converter are presented.

  • The objective of this study is to document the secondary flow and the total pressure loss distribution in the contoured endwall installed linear turbine nozzle guide vane cascade passage and to propose an appropriate contraction ratio of the contoured endwall which shows the best loss reduction among the simulated cases. In this study, three different contraction ratio of contoured endwalls have been tested. This study was performed by experimental method and when the contoured endwall has the contraction ratio of 0.17 on exit height the results showed the best loss reduction.

  • In this paper, admittance is introduced to represent electro-mechanical characteristics of piezoelectric structures and to predict the performance of piezoelectric shunt system. Finite element method is used to obtain numerical admittance. In order to illuminate the effect of noise reduction in the shunt system, two experimental setups were constructed. One is for matching the resonant shunt damping. The other is a standard test setup according to SAE J1400 used to measure the transmission loss for the smart panel with shunt circuit. Shunt performance and noise reduction of smart panel are realized by these two experiments.

  • Little is known about how the increased porosity of a deciduous windbreak, which results from loss of leaves, influences wind speed reduction. We hypothesized that, with loss of foliage, the wind speed reduction effectiveness of a deciduous windbreak decreases on near leeward side but not on further leeward side and that wind speed recovers faster in the full foliage season than in other seasons. During summer, autumn, and winter (full, medium, and non-foliage season, respectively), we observed wind speed and direction around a deciduous windbreak in a traditional Korean village on windward and near and further leeward sides (at -8H, 2H, and 6H; H = 20 m, a windbreak height). We used a linear mixed effects model to determine that the relative wind speed reduction at 2H significantly decreased from 83% to 48% ($F_{2,111.97}=73.6$, P < 0.0001) with the loss of foliage. However, the relative wind speed reduction at 6H significantly increased from 26% to 43% ($F_{2,98.54}=18.5$, P < 0.0001). Consequently, wind speed recovery rate between 2H and 6H in summer was two times higher than in autumn and ten times higher than in winter ($F_{2,102.93}=223.1$, P < 0.0001). These results indicate that deciduous windbreaks with full foliage seem to induce large turbulence and increase wind speed recovery rate on leeward side. Our study suggests that further research is needed to find the optimal foliage density of a deciduous windbreak for maximizing windbreak effectiveness regardless of seasonal foliage changes.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the reduction in bending properties of radiata pine sapwood associated with incipient brown-rot decay. Decayed bending specimens by Tyromyces palustris and Gloeophyllum trabeum for varoious periods were tested destructively. Brown-rot decay by T. palustris and G. trabeum caused serious reduction in bending properties at very early stages of decay, with about 30 percent decrease in bending strength observed for only 1~2 percent weight loss. In general, the reduction in bending properties caused by T. palustris was somewhat greater than that by G. trabeum. Work to maximum load was reduced most severely and rapidly from the onset of decay, while modulus of elasticity showed a much more moderate rate of reduction. Modulus of rupture was affected by decay to a greater extent than was modulus of elasticity. Since a relatively strong correlation between weight loss and bending strength was observed, the residual strength of decayed wood can be predicted by weight loss due to decay. The results of this study indicate that very early stages of brown-rot decay reduce the bending strength significantly. Thus, it is recommended that all load-bearing members in wooden structures, especially those that are periodically wetted, should be inspected regularly to prevent a sudden failure even though there are no definite signs of decay.
