The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of OPAC displays and search interfaces for children. The OPACS of Cheongju Miracle Library, Nowon Children's Library in Seoul. Los Angeles Public Library in the U.S.A. and HelMet Library System in Finland are examined on the basis of 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)' published by IFLA and Nielsen's 'User Interface Design Heuristics'. Discussed are such topics as the features of basic and detailed search screens. the brief display of search results. the arrangement and full display of bibliographic records, and the displays for zero-results and large retrieval sets. The OPAC displays of Cheongju Miracle Library and Nowon Children' Library are not particularly designed to serve children which are their primary users. The OPAC displays for children of LAPL and HelMet Library System are rather simplified and customized to represent specifically the needs and information seeking behavior of children.
Background: The goal of this study was to evaluate whether a modified fluoroscopic technique for positioning a hook plate affected the clinical results of treating Neer type II distal clavicle fractures and Rockwood type V acromioclavicular (AC) joint separations with this device. Methods: The study was a retrospective consecutive case series with data analysis. Sixty-four patients with a Neer type II distal clavicle fracture or a Rockwood type V AC joint injury treated between March 2009 and June 2013 were divided into 2 groups: traditional fluoroscopic technique (traditional view, 31 patients) or modified fluoroscopic technique ('hook' view, 33 patients). A visual analogue scale (VAS) score, the modified University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder scale score, and radiographic osteolysis were the main outcome measures. Results: The traditional group included a significantly larger number of patients with acromial osteolysis than the hook view group: 23 patients (74.2%) vs. 11 patients (33.3%), respectively (p=0.01). Before plate removal, the hook group reported less pain and higher UCLA shoulder scale scores than the traditional group: average VAS score, 1.55 vs. 2.26, respectively; average UCLA score, 30.88 vs. 27.06, respectively. However, there was no significant difference after plate removal. Conclusions: The hook view allows more accurate bending of the hook plate around the contour of the acromion, resulting in decreased osteolysis, decreased pain, and better function with the plate in situ.
Background: To compare the effect of different starting periods of rehabilitative exercise (early or delayed passive exercise) on the rate of retear and other clinical outcomes after the arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff. Methods: In total, 103 patients who underwent arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff were included in the study. Determined at 2 weeks post-operation, patients who were incapable of passive forward elevation greater than $90^{\circ}$ were allotted to the early exercise group (group I: 79 patients; 42 males, 37 females), whilst those capable were allotted to the delayed exercise group (group II: 24 patients; 14 males, 10 females). The group I started passive exercise, i.e. stretching, within 2 weeks of operation, whilst group II started within 6 weeks. The results were compared on average 15.8 months (11-49 months) post-operation using the passive range of motion, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain score, and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and Constant scores. Stiffness was defined as passive forward elevation or external rotation of less than $30^{\circ}C$ compared to the contralateral side. Follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out on average 1 year post-operation and the rate of retear was compared with Sugaya's criteria. Results: There were no differences between the two groups in gender, age, smoking, presence of diabetes, arm dominance, period of tear unattended, pre-operative range of motion, shape and size of tear, degree of tendon retraction, and tendon quality. There were no significant differences in clinical outcomes. Whilst stiffness was more frequent in group II (p-value 0.03), retear was more frequent in group I (p-value 0.028) according to the MRI follow-up. Conclusions: During rehabilitation after the arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff, the delay of passive exercise seems to decrease the rate of retear but increase the risk of stiffness.
Background: Arthroscopic fixations for large and comminuted bony Bankart lesions are technically difficult. We developed an arthroscopic multiple pulled suture (MPS) technique to restore large and comminuted bony Bankart lesions. Methods: Ten patients (mean age, 49.8 years; range, 31-79 years) underwent bony Bankart repair using the illustrated MPS technique and were then followed for a mean of 27.3 months. A plain radiograph series and three-dimensional computed tomography scans were taken at the initial clinical evaluation and 3 months postoperatively. Outcome measurements included the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Rowe score, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score, and subjective patient satisfaction, along with surgical complications. Results: Union of an osseous fragment with the glenoid rim was confirmed in all patients on a computed tomography scan 3 months after operation. The osseous fragment was restored to proper articular congruence and reduction. The affected shoulder was stable in nine of the 10 patients. One patient presented with a redislocation after a sports injury 3 years postoperatively. The ASES, Rowe, and UCLA scores improved at the final evaluation, and median patient satisfaction at the final follow-up was 9 of 10 points (range, 6-10 points). Conclusions: The arthroscopic MPS technique for bony Bankart lesions with large or comminuted osseous fragments was a relatively easy and safe method for stable fixation of the osseous fragment. Therefore, the arthroscopic MPS technique resulted in good restoration of stability with high patient satisfaction and low complication rates.

In this study, numerical analyses were used to investigate the performance of a coupling control method for the dynamic responses of adjacent buildings under multiple hazards. Numerical simulations were done using the earthquake loads of regions with strong seismicity in Los Angeles, California, and the wind loads in regions with strong winds in Charleston, North Carolina. The artificial earthquake and wind loads were made using SIMQKE and Kaimal Spectrum based on ASCE 7-10. Ten-story and twenty-story adjacent buildings were selected as example structures, and nonlinear hysteretic dampers were used to connect them. The Bouc-Wen model was used to model the nonlinear hysteretic dampers. The results show that the proposed control method could effectively reduce the dynamic responses, and the optimal control designs were different for each hazard.
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the composition of organic acids on the bioavailability of heavy metals in the rhizosphere of corn (Zea mays L.) over 12 weeks after treatment of biosolids. After planting the plants were sampled at 12th week and analyzed for heavy metals in shoot and root and organic acids in the rhizosphere. Results showed that biomass yields of Zea mays L. grown on biosolids-treated media were significantly higher than those grown on standard media. The effect of biosolids on biomass yields of Zea mays L. was in order of Riverside ${\approx}$ Los Angeles ${\approx}$ MWRDGC > Milorganite > Nu-earth > standard media. Metal uptake by Zea mays L. was closely related with the contents contained on biosolids treated. In the plot treated with Nu-earth the uptake of Cd and Zn by shoot was significantly higher than those at the plots treated with other biosolids. The uptake patterns of Cd and Zn by root were similar to those of shoot. The uptake of Cr and Ni was significantly higher with application of Nu-earth over other biosolids. In all cases, the major organic acids in the rhizoshpere were lactic, acetic, propionic, butyric, and oxalic acids. Other organic acids were glutaric and succinic and occasionally, pyruvic and tartaric acids were also found. And the organic acid compositions did not vary significantly with the treatments of biosolids. Butyric and acetic acids were distinctively dominant both in the standard and the biosolids treatments.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in Health Locus of Control (HLOC), depression, wellbeing, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP) between middle aged Korean and Korean-American women. Methods: Data from 80 Korean-American women living in Los Angeles, USA and 82 Korean women living in W-city, Korea, were collected using a self administered questionnaire including items on HLOC, HPLP, a Wellbeing Index and Major Depression Inventory. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the middle aged Koreans and Korean-Americans on mean age, education, religion, and current health insurance. Significant differences were found on HLOC (F= 2.504, p=.033) and Wellbeing (F=2.451, p=.036). The results also showed significant differences on HPLP (total HPLP, F=4.655, p=.001; physical activity, F=2.967, p=.014; nutrition, F=4.250, p=.001; spiritual growth, F=4.398, p=.001; interpersonal relations, F=2.648, p=.025; and stress management, F=5.201, p<.001) using ANCOVA. However, there were no significant differences on depression, or health responsibility in HPLP between the groups. Conclusion: Understanding middle aged women's health adjustments based on their culture will enhance the ability of health professionals to provide culturally congruent care and enable middle aged women to develop healthy lifestyles.
This study examined how socio-demographic and background characteristics, acculturation, and gender role attitudes influence Korean American male adults' beliefs about wife beating. Using a structured self-administered questionnaire, data was collected from 201 Korean American men between the ages of 20 and 64, married for at least two years, currently living with a wife, and residing in Los Angeles County. Of the 201, 196 completed questionnaires were used to analyze the data. The respondents' beliefs about wife beating were measured by the Inventory of Beliefs About Wife Beating(IBWB) Short Form, consisting of 11 items. The multiple regression analyses revealed that age and traditional gender role attitudes were significantly associated with the respondents' beliefs about wife beating, but no significant associations between witnessed parental abuse and acculturation and beliefs about wife beating were found. Implications of the findings for mental health programs and future research are discussed.
This study suggests a method for deriving earthquake response based on log-normal distribution in order to obtain realistic and reliable probability and statistical seismic response of structures. The development of three earthquake suites were presented, with a brief description of 2%, 10%, and 50% in 50 years probability of exceedance according the USGS Los Angeles probabilistic seismic hazard maps. In order to analyze the basic dynamic behavior, a Single-Degree-of-Freedom (SDOF) structure was selected and the seismic response spectrum representing the response of each natural period was plotted. Overall, the mean response values presented through the log-normal distribution is lower than the standard normal distribution. Thus, it is considered that the former method can be provided as the effective cost on performance-based seismic design more than the latter one.

Background: The duration of immobilization after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and the optimal time to commence rehabilitation are still the subject of ongoing debates. This study was undertaken to evaluate the functional outcome and rotator cuff healing status after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair by comparing early and delayed rehabilitation. Methods: Totally, 76 patients with small, medium, and large sized rotator cuff tears underwent arthroscopic repair using the suturebridge technique. In early rehabilitation group, 38 patients commenced passive range of motion at postoperative day 2 whereas 38 patients assigned to the delayed rehabilitation group commenced passive range of motion at postoperative week 3. At the end of the study period, clinical and functional evaluations (Constant score, the University of California, Los Angeles [UCLA] shoulder score) were carried out, subsequent to measuring the range of motion, visual analogue scale for pain, and isokinetic dynamometer test. Rotator cuff healing was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging at least 6 months after surgery. Results: No significant difference was obtained in range of motion and visual analogue scale between both groups. Functional outcomes showed similar improvements in the Constant score (early: 67.0-88.0; delayed: 66.9-91.0; p<0.001) and the UCLA shoulder score (early: 20.3-32.3; delayed: 20.4-32.4; p<0.001). Furthermore, rotator cuff healing showed no significant differences between the groups (range, 6-15 months; average, 10.4 months). Conclusions: Delayed passive rehabilitation does not bring about superior outcomes. Therefore, early rehabilitation would be useful to help patients resume their daily lives.
