Height Dependence of Plasma Properties in a Solar Limb Active Region Observed by Hinode/EIS

  • We investigate a cool loop and a dark lane over a limb active region on 2007 March 14 by the Hinode/EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS). The cool loop is clearly seen in the EIS spectral lines formed at the transition region temperature (log T = 5.8). The dark lane is characterized by an elongated faint structure in coronal spectral lines (log T = 5.8 - 6.1) and rooted on a bright point. We examine their electron densities, Doppler velocities, and non-thermal velocities as a function of distance from the limb using the spectral lines formed at different temperatures (log T = 5.4 - 6.4). The electron densities of the cool loop and the dark lane are derived from the density sensitive line pairs of Mg VII, Fe XII, and Fe XIV spectra. Under the hydrostatic equilibrium and isothermal assumption, we determine their temperatures from the density scale height. Comparing the scale height temperatures to the peak formation temperatures of the spectral lines, we note that the scale height temperature of the cool loop is consistent with a peak formation temperature of the Mg VII (log T = 5.8) and the scale height temperature of the dark lane is close to a peak formation temperature of the Fe XII and Fe XIII (log T = 6.1 - 6.2). It is interesting to note that the structures of the cool loop and the dark lane are most visible in these temperature lines. While the non-thermal velocity in the cool loop slightly decreases (less than 7 km $s^{-1}$) along the loop, that in the dark lane sharply falls off with height. The variation of non-thermal velocity with height in the cool loop and the dark lane is contrast to that in off-limb polar coronal holes which are considered as source of the fast solar wind. Such a decrease in the non-thermal velocity may be explained by wave damping near the solar surface or turbulence due to magnetic reconnection near the bright point.

The Effect of Penetrating Agent and Fluorosilane on High Temperature Teflon Coating (침투제와 불소화실란이 고온용 테프론 코팅에 미치는 영향)

  • Although the basalt fiber has superior fire-resistance and chemical resistance, it has many disadvantages in its applications. Generally, the tensile and loop strengths of basalt fiber were decreased with generated frictional heat during industial appplications. To solve this problem, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating system was introduced and a sutable coating condition was evaluated. The basalt fiber was pre-treated with triethoxytrifluoropropylsilane (TMTFPS) at various pHs and then coated with PTFE dispersions with penetrating agent sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfo succinate (DOS-Na) to increase the tensile and loop strengths as well as to reduce the fibril during working. A universial testing machine (Instron Model 3366) was used to measure tensile and loop strengths. When the PTFE dispersion with 0.25 wt% of DOS-Na was coated on the surface of basalt fiber after pre-treating with 5 wt% of PTFE, the highest tensile and loop strengths were reached to 3.5 gf/D and 2.4 gf/D, respectively.

  • The most important problem in NC machining of a freeform mold surface is removal of tool interference. In this paper three methods are introduced to remove self-intersection on offsetted freeform surface for 3-axis NC. All methods are using intersectional offset curves on original offset surface. The fast method is sequential loop check using two lines which have two neighbor points of intersectional offset curves.

  • In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

An Algorithm for Splitting a Box by a Loop and Its Applications in Manufacturing

  • During the design of dies and molds, the cavity of the object is obtained by subtracting it from a surrounding rectangular block. This box is subsequently split into two halves by the parting surface. Similar problems also occur in some RP processes such as LOM, SGC, SLS and 3DP where the machine produces a block inside which the prototype is buried. Determining the orientation of the object inside the box and the corresponding parting surface taking appropriate constraints into account have been addressed by several researchers. However, given the parting surface, the problem of splitting the box development of a software package called OptiLOM (now a module of an RP software Magics 8.0), the authors realized non-triviality of this problem since the loop can spread over as many as 5 faces of the box. In this paper, the authors have tried to bring out the importance of this problem and have presented their algorithm to solve it.

  • A first order shear deformable Loop-subdivision triangular element which can handle transverse shear deformation of moderately thick shell is developed. The developed element is general since it includes the effect of transverse shear deformation and has standard six degrees of freedom per node.(three translations and three rotations) The quartic box-spline function is employed as interpolation basis function. Numerical examples for the benchmark problems are analyzed in order to assess the performance of the newly developed subdivision shell element. Both in the uniform and in the distorted mesh configurations.

A New Robust Integral Variable Structure Controller for Uncertain More Affine Nonlinear Systems with Mismatched Uncertainties (부정합조건 불확실성을 갖는 비선형 시스템을 위한 새로운 강인한 적분 가변 구조 제어기)

  • In this note, a systematic design of a new robust nonlinear integral variable structure controller based on state dependent nonlinear form is presented for the control of uncertain more affine nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties and matched disturbance. After an affine uncertain nonlinear system is represented in the form of state dependent nonlinear system, a systematic design of a new robust nonlinear integral variable structure controller is presented. To be linear in the closed loop resultant dynamics and remove the reaching phase problems, the linear integral sliding surface is suggested. A corresponding control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop exponential stability and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the linear integral sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation studies, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.

  • This paper proposes a new inductance minimization scheme for a gradient system of arbitrarily selected shape. Although it is important to minimize the gradient coil inductance to reduce the current switching time, such minimization has been possible only for cylindrical or parallel biplanar coils. By using small current loops on arbitrarily selected surface as optimization elements, the inductance of the whole circuit can be minimized using the loop's self- and mutual-inductances. Wire positions can be easily derived from the loop current distribution. Preliminary studies for the design of x-directional surface gradient coil show the utility of tile proposed gradient coil design scheme.

After a MIMO uncertain affine nonlinear system is represented in the form of state dependent nonlinear system, a systematic design of a robust nonlinear variable structure controller is presented. To be linear in the closed loop resultant dynamics, the linear sliding surface is applied. A corresponding diagonalized control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop global exponential stability and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the linear sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation study, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.
