A versatile software architecture for civil structure monitoring with wireless sensor networks

  • Structural health monitoring with wireless sensor networks has received much attention in recent years due to the ease of sensor installation and low deployment and maintenance costs. However, sensor network technology needs to solve numerous challenges in order to substitute conventional systems: large amounts of data, remote configuration of measurement parameters, on-site calibration of sensors and robust networking functionality for long-term deployments. We present a structural health monitoring network that addresses these challenges and is used in several deployments for monitoring of bridges and buildings. Our system supports a diverse set of sensors, a library of highly optimized processing algorithms and a lightweight solution to support a wide range of network runtime configurations. This allows flexible partitioning of the application between the sensor network and the backend software. We present an analysis of this partitioning and evaluate the performance of our system in three experimental network deployments on civil structures.

Model tests on the moored vessel with different moonpool shapes

  • Moonpools are vertical wells in a floating body used onboard many types of vessels like cable-laying vessels and offshore support vessels. Moonpool gives passage to underwater activities for different types of ships as per their mission requirements. It is observed that inside a moonpool considerable relative motions may occur, depending on shape, depth of the moonpool and on the frequency range of the waves to which the ship is exposed. The vessel responses are entirely different in zero and non-zero Froude number. Former situation is paid attention in this study as the mission requirement of the platform is to be in the particular location for long period of operation. It is well known that there are two modes of responses depending on the shape of the moonpool viz., piston mode for square shape and sloshing mode for rectangular shapes with different aspect ratios of opening like 1:1.5 and 1:2 ratios. Circular shaped moonpool is also tested for measuring the responses. The vessel moored using heavy lines are modeled and tested in the wave basin. The moored lines are provided with pre-tension and the dynamic tensions on the lines are measured. The different modes of oscillations of water column are measured using wave gauge and the vessel response at a particular situation is determined. RAOs determined for various situations provide better insight to the designer. The experiments done in the wave basin may also be compared with a software package meant for handling moored floating bodies.

Effect of rain on flutter derivatives of bridge decks

  • Flutter derivatives provide the basis of predicting the critical wind speed in flutter and buffeting analysis of long-span cable-supported bridges. Many studies have been performed on the methods and applications of identification of flutter derivatives of bridge decks under wind action. In fact, strong wind, especially typhoon, is always accompanied by heavy rain. Then, what is the effect of rain on flutter derivatives and flutter critical wind speed of bridges? Unfortunately, there have been no studies on this subject. This paper makes an initial study on this problem. Covariance-driven Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI in short) which is capable of estimating the flutter derivatives of bridge decks from their steady random responses is presented first. An experimental set-up is specially designed and manufactured to produce the conditions of rain and wind. Wind tunnel tests of a quasi-streamlined thin plate model are conducted under conditions of only wind action and simultaneous wind-rain action, respectively. The flutter derivatives are then extracted by the SSI method, and comparisons are made between the flutter derivatives under the two different conditions. The comparison results tentatively indicate that rain has non-trivial effects on flutter derivatives, especially on and $H_2$ and $A_2$thus the flutter critical wind speeds of bridges.

인접 교류전류가 Bi-2223테이프의 통전손실에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Neighboring Tape′s AC Currents on Transport Current Loss of a Bi-2223 Tape)

  • Bi-2223 tapes have been developed for low-field power applications at liquid nitrogen temperature. When the Bi-2223 tapes are used in an application such as a power transmission cable or a power transformer, they are supplied with an AC transport current simultaneously. AC loss taking into account such real applications is a crucial issue for power applications fo the Bi-2223 tapes to be feasible. In this paper, the transport losses for different AC current levels and arrangements of the neighboring tapes have been measured in a 1./5 m long Bi-2223 tape. The significant increase of the transport losses due to neighboring tape's AC currents is observed. An increase of the transport losses caused by a decrease of the Bi-2223 tape's critical current is a minor effect. The measured trasprot losses could not be explained by a dynamic resistance loss based on DC voltage-current characteristics in combination with the neighboring tape's AC currents.The trasport losses do not depend on the frequency of the neighboring tape's AC currents but is arrangements in the range of small current especially.

  • Vibration performance of a 6 kW stand-alone wind turbine(W/T) generator is investigated under the wind environment of Daegwanryung mountain area. In the W/T, wind condition, power performance and structural stability are correlated each other An integrated monitoring system which consists of accelerometers, anemometers, power meters and auxiliary sensors for atmospheric data are constructed to measure the required data simultaneously. Based upon the data acquired over a long period of time, vibration performance of the W/T structure is estimated with annual wind data and generating power performance. Within the operating speed range, possibility of severe nitration is diagnosed. Vibration sources are identified and countermeasures are proposed. The goal of the study is to offer the basic information on W/T vibration performance at the design stage of a small stand alone W/T structure.

The progresses of superconducting technology for power grid last decade in China

  • With the increasing development of renewable energy, it is expected that large-scale renewable power would be transported from the west and north area of China to the east and south area. For this reason, it will be necessary to develop a wide-area power grid in which the renewable energy would be the dominant power source, and the power grid will be faced by some critical challenges such as long-distance large-capacity power transmission, the stability of the wide-area power grid and the land use problem for the power grid. The superconducting technology for power (STP) would be a possible alternative for the development of China's future power grid. In last decade, STP has been extensively developed in China. In this paper, we present an overview of the R&D of STP last decade in China including: 1) the development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials, 2) DC power cables, 3) superconducting power substations, 4) fault current limiters and 5) superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES).

  • 분산 컴퓨터 시스템에서 정보 화일을 효율적으로 관리, 운용하기 위한 화일 할당 문제의 최적해를 구하는 화일 할당 알고리듬을 제안한다. 컴퓨터 노드(site)가 많은 경우 화일 할당에 많은 시간이 소요되므로 선 할당(preassignment)을 수행하여 문제의 규모를 축소하고 계산시간을 개선한다. 할당이 진행중인 상태의 표시치(representative value)를 정확하게 나타내기 위해 기대값을 이용한 평가치 계산기법을 제안하고 빠른 시간에 최적 할당이 이루어지도록 후보 노드(candidate node)에 대한 선택기준(selection criteria)을 설정한다. 선택기준에 의해 각 노드의 화일 할당 여부를 결정하고 최종 평가치가 할당 상태의 전체 비용을 나타낸다. 제안한 알고리듬은 다항식 시간(polynomial time)알고리듬이며 여러 예제에 실현한 결과 할당 소요시간이 개선되고 기존의 할당 알고리듬과 비교하여 최적해를 구하는데 있어 우수함을 나타냈다.

The aerodynamic characteristics of twin column, high rise bridge towers

  • The high-rise supporting towers of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges commonly comprise a pair of slender prisms of roughly square cross-section with a center-to-centre spacing of from perhaps 2 to 6 widths and connected by one or more cross-ties. The tower columns may have a constant spacing as common for suspension bridges or the spacing may reduce towards the top of the tower. The present paper is concerned with the aerodynamics of such towers and describes an experimental investigation of the overall aerodynamic forces acting on a pair of square cylinders in two-dimensional flow. Wind tunnel pressure measurements were carried out in smooth flow and with a longitudinal intensity of turbulence 0.10. Different angles of attack were considered between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, and separations between the two columns from twice to 13 times the side width of the column. The mean values of the overall forces proved to be related to the bias introduced in the flow by the interaction between the two cylinders; the overall rms forces are related to the level of coherence between the shedding-induced forces on the two cylinders and to their phase. Plots showing the variation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number as a function of the separation, together with the force coefficients spectra and lift cross-correlation functions are presented in the paper.

최소침습술을 위한 의료용 인스트루먼트의 동작 성능 향상 (Improvement in the Control Performance of Instruments used for Minimally Invasive Surgery)

  • This paper presents feedforward controllers to improve the control performance of the motion and grasping force of a surgical instrument used in an MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) robot. The surgical instrument has a long distance between the drive motors and its active joints. Therefore, the gripper on the instrument is controlled by a cable drive mechanism, which generates a coupled motion between the wrist joint and the grip direction. In order to solve the problem, this paper analyzes the pulley composition of the surgical instrument and proposes feedforward controllers to eliminate the coupled motion. Furthermore, feedforward controllers to regulate the grasping force are proposed to deal with another coupling problem between the grasping force of the instrument and the motion of the instrument joints. The experimental results demonstrate the improved control performance of the motion and grasping force of the instrument.
