The capacity of tubular truss chords subjected to concentrated reaction forces in the vicinity of the open end (i.e., the bearing region) is not directly treated by existing design specifications; although capacity equations are promulgated for related tubular joint configurations. The lack of direct treatment of bearing capacity in existing design specifications seems to represent an unsatisfactory situation given the fact that connections very often control the design of long-span tubular structures comprised of members with slender cross-sections. The case of the simple-span overhead highway sign truss is studied, in which the bearing reaction is applied near the chord end. The present research is aimed at assessing the validity of adapting existing specifications' capacity equations from related cases so as to be applicable in determining design capacity in tubular truss bearing regions. These modified capacity equations are subsequently used in comparisons with full-scale experimental results obtained from testing carried out at the University of Pittsburgh.

Long-short pile composite foundations bear both vertical and horizontal loads in many engineering applications. This study used indoor model tests to determine the horizontal bearing mechanism of a composite foundation with long and short piles under horizontal loads. A custom experimental device was developed to prevent excessive eccentricity of the vertical loading device caused by the horizontal displacement. ABAQUS software was used to analyze the influence of the load size and cushion thickness on the horizontal bearing mechanism. The results reveal that a large vertical load leads to soil densification and increases the horizontal bearing capacity of the composite foundation. The magnitude of the horizontal displacement of the pile and the horizontal load borne by the pile are related to the piles' positions. Due to different pile lengths, the long piles exhibit long pile effects and experience bending deformation, whereas the short piles rotate around a point (0.2 L from the pile bottom) as the horizontal load increases. Selecting a larger cushion thickness significantly improves the horizontal load sharing capacity of the soil and reduces the horizontal displacement of the pile top.

It was demonstrated earlier that for laminar, isothermal flow of the lubricant in long journal bearings, inertia has negligible effect on the load carrying capacity and influences only the stability characteristics of the bearing. The question in the present paper is: 'will these conclusions of the isothermal theory remain valid in the presence of significant dissipation, or will lubricant inertia and dissipation interact non-linearly to bring about qualitative changes in bearing performance\ulcorner' The results obtained here assert that the effect of lubricant inertia on load carrying capacity remains negligible, irrespective of the rate of dissipation. The stability of the bearing is, however, affected by lubricant inertia. These results, although obtained here for long bearings with Sommerfeld and Gumbel boundary conditions, are believed to be applicable to practical bearing operations and affirm that bearing load may be calculated from classical, i. e., non-inertial theory.

The existing methods for installation of long steel pipe pile have some uneconomical problems such as increase of installation cost and period due to the welding of two piles and removal of soil plug, and decrease of driving efficiency due to the increase of driving resistance by time effect during the welding of piles and removal of soil plug, etc. Thus, in this study, new installation method for long steel pipe pile is suggested to work out the existing problems, and calibration chamber tests are peformed to investigate both driving and economical efficiency for the suggested method. The test results showed that the new installation method has increase bearing capacity as well as reduce installation cost and period for long steel pipe piles as compared with existing methods.
Form the application of long rail system the non-ballast steel plate bridges, fatigue strength increase and rail noise reduction can be expected. This is mainly form the reduction of the rail impact at the rail joint locations which already made to behave together from welds. In the high speed rail, application of long rail system is essential because without long rail system, the required serviceability level can not be achieved. But even with this long rail systems, the thermal expansion from the girder can not be absorbed in the normal bearing systems, and these expansion cause between girder and rail. Also unexpected rail buckling and fracture through rail thermal tension may happen. It was found through numerical analysis and field measurement that these problems can be avoided by semi-fixed bearing system. In this study, the benefits of non-ballast plate bridge through long rail system, especially at the point of girder stability, girder stiffness increase and bearing maintenance will be reviewed.

Bearing diagnostics is difficult in a gearbox because bearing signals are masked by the strong gear signals. Self adaptive noise cancellation(SANC) is useful technique to seperate bearing signals from gear signals. While gear signals are correlated with a long correlation length, bearing signals are not correlated with a short length. SANC seperates two components on the basis of correlation length. Then we can find defect frequency component in the envelope spectrum of the bearing signals.
In order to provide a novel strategy for long-span bridge health monitoring system design, this paper proposes a novel ultimate bearing capacity ratios based bridge internal force monitoring design method. The bridge ultimate bearing capacity analysis theories are briefly described. Then, based on the ultimate bearing capacity of the structural component, the component ultimate bearing capacity ratio, the uniformity of ultimate bearing capacity ratio, and the reference of component ultimate bearing capacity ratio are defined. Based on the defined indices, the high bearing components can then be found, and the internal force monitoring system can be designed. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the bridge health monitoring system design of the second highway bridge of Wuhu Yangtze river. Through the ultimate bearing capacity analysis of the bridge in eight load conditions, the high bearing components are found based on the proposed method. The bridge internal force monitoring system is then preliminary designed. The results show that the proposed method can provide quantitative criteria for sensors layout. The monitoring components based on the proposed method are consistent with the actual failure process of the bridge, and can reduce the monitoring of low bearing components. For the second highway bridge of Wuhu Yangtze river, only 59 components are designed to be monitored their internal forces. Therefore, the bridge internal force monitoring system based on the ultimate bearing capacity ratio can decrease the number of monitored components and the cost of the whole monitoring system.
Large tonnage pile foundation load test system is designed in this paper by using pre-stressed technique to optimize the design of anchor pile reaction beam system, in which project pile can be successfully taken as anchor pile. The test results show that the cracks and excessive deformations of the prestressed anti-force device designed in this study have not occurred, and the prestressed tendons of the anchor pile ensure that the anchor pile will not be pulled and fractured, and the prestressed tendons can be reused, thus ensuring the safety and reliability of the test. This test method can directly test bearing capacity of long rock-socketed piles, and analysis bearing behaviors from test results of sensors which embedded in the pile. Through test studied, authors summarized the vertical bearing characteristics of long rock-socketed piles and the main problems that should be paid attention to during design and construction, and provided reliable solutions.
