Driving Event Data such as the rapid acceleration, the rapid deceleration, the sudden braking, and the sudden departure, and over speeding provide important information to predict or analyze the driving habits and accident risk of a driver. Most of the data that represent the driver's driving habits generally fit to the parametric distribution, whereas extreme parts of the data to estimate the accident risk of a driver may not. This paper presents an empirical distribution that is divided into two regions, one is from the normal distribution, and the other is from the general pareto distribution for the driving habits of a driver.

This study conducted a 3-stage survey and simulation experiment to identify the impact of vehicle platoons on car-following behavior of manually-driven vehicles. Vehicle maneuvering data obtained from driving simulations was statistically analyzed based on three measures including average speed, acceleration noise, and offset to represent the deviation of lateral movements. Results indicate that MV drivers tended to have psychological burden while driving in automated vehicle platooning environments, which resulted in different vehicle maneuvers. It is expected that the outcome of this study would be useful fundamentals in developing various traffic operations strategies for managing mixed traffic stream consisting of MVs and autonomous vehicles.
Analysis of the interaction between the automated vehicles and manual vehicles is very important in analyzing the performance of automated cooperative driving environments. In particular, the automated vehicle platooning can affect the driving behavior of adjacent manual vehicles. The purpose of this study is to analyze the lane change behavior of the manual vehicles in automated vehicle platonning environment and to conduct the experiment and questionnaire surveys in three stages. In the first stage, a video questionnaire survey was conducted, and responsive behaviors of manual vehicles were investigated. In second stage, the driving simulator experiments were conducted to investigate the lane change behaviors of in automated vehicle platonning environments. To analyze the lane change behavior of the manual vehicles, lane change durations and acceleration noise, which are indicators of traffic flow stability, were used. The driving behavior of manual vehicles were compared across different market penetration rates (MPR) of automated vehicles and human factors. Lastly, NASA-TLX (NASA Task Load Index) was used to evaluate the workload of the manual vehicle drivers. As a result of the analysis, it was identified that manual vehicle drivers had psychological burdens while driving in automated vehicle platonning environments. Lane change durations were longer when the MPR of the automated vehicles increased, and acceleration noise were increased in the case of 30-40 years old or female drivers. The results from this study can be used as a fundamental for more realistic traffic simulations reflecting the interaction between the automated vehicles and manual vehicles. It is also expected to effectively support the establishment of valuable transportation management strategy in automated vehicle environments.
In roadside workplaces, more attention should be paid to the safety of workers. The roadside workers underestimate the effect of the brightness of their clothes and judge that drivers will recognize them easily, and the drivers misjudge that the roadside workers are far away and that the vehicle can be stopped in sufficient time. Therefore, customized safety education reflecting this and wearing work clothes with certified visibility functions are required. In Korea, it is not compulsory for roadside workers and vehicle guide attendants to wear work clothes with a visibility function. In this study, the distance ahead perceived by drivers was measured using manikins wearing certified and non-certified reflective safety vests. The perception distance of the non-certified reflective safety vest was 1.4 times longer than that of the certified reflective safety vest, thus confirming the importance of wearing a certified reflective safety vest. To prevent roadside workers from suffering traffic accidents, we propose the enactment of a law that makes it mandatory for them to wear high-visibility safety clothing. Specifically, Article 32 of the Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act should include high-visibility safety clothing in life protection equipment, and additionally, to prevent secondary accidents, we propose the enactment of a law requiring the installation and wearing of certified reflective safety vests in vehicles.

With the increase of truck traffic, roads are becoming more congested and the risk of accidents is also increasing. Since the fatality rate of traffic accidents caused by trucks is about 2 to 3 times higher than that of passenger cars and buses, it is urgent to prepare policies for truck traffic safety. While most of the previous studies focused on factor analysis that contributes to traffic accidents, this study presented traffic safety policies (4 major-criteria and 12 sub-criteria) for trucks through driver interviews and previous studies. Then, the priority of the policies was evaluated by using Fuzzy-AHP. As a result, the improvement of truck drivers' working environment was evaluated as the most important criteria, and followed by the improvement of road traffic conditions. In detail, there is an urgent need to improve the freight car fare system, ensure sufficient rest for drivers, and strengthen the crackdown of illegal parking and stopping along roads. This study is expected to be usefully utilized in preparing traffic flow safety policies in preparation for the continuous increase of truck traffic.
Busan Port has a major function as the sixth largest port among the world container cargo standards and the second largest port among the world transshipment cargo standards. However, because of the lack of policy reflection on the port facility and carriers, overload control is a serious problem in freight transportation of transshipment cargo in Busan New Port and the port hinterland. In this regard, we reviewed the actual conditions of drivers, carriers, logistics managers, identified the problems, and suggest improvement plans.

Traffic safety in freeway work zones is of keen interest since both crash frequency and severity are much higher than those in general freeway sections. The lane closure in work zones results in greater work load of drivers due to compulsory lane changes and speed reduction. Therefore, traffic merging control is an effective countermeasure for enhancing work zone safety. This study proposed an integrated framework based on driving and traffic simulations to evaluate traffic merging control methods in terms of traffic safety. In addition to the conventional merging method using the taper, joint merge and chicane-type merge were evaluated by the proposed methodology. Chicane-type merge outperformed other methods under level of service (LOS) A and B. On the other hand, it was identified that joint merge showed the best safety performance under LOS C traffic conditions.

Intentional aggressive driving (IAD) is a very dangerous driving behavior that threatens to attack the adjacent vehicles. Most existing studies have focused on the independent driving characteristics of attack drivers. However, the identification of interactions between the offender and the victim is necessary for the traffic safety analysis. This study established multi-agent driving simulation environments to systematically analyze vehicle interactions in terms of traffic safety. Time-to-collision (TTC) was adopted to quantify vehicle interactions in terms of traffic safety. In addition, a exponential decay function was further applied to compare the overall pattern of change in crash potentials when IAD events occurred. The outcome of this study would be useful in developing policy-making activities to enhance traffic safety by reducing dangerous driving events including intentional aggressive driving.

Effective installation and operations of traffic safety signs in the advance warning area is of considerable interest for safer traffic management at freeway work zones. This study evaluated the feasibility of traffic safety sign installation based on a driving simulation experiment to take drivers' responsive characteristics into consideration. Both the compliance rate for speed limit and a lane-changing safety index were used for evaluating a set of driving simulation scenarios. It was identified that providing speed limit signs to reduce speed in advance and afterward guiding lane-changing could lead to safer maneuvering of vehicles entering work zones. The outcomes of this study are expected to be useful for revising freeway work zone management policies toward crash prevention.
This study proposes a novel performance measure, which is referred to as Hazardous Spacing Index (HSI), to be used for evaluating safety of traffic stream on freeways. The basic principle of the proposed methodology is to investigate whether drivers would have sufficient stopping sight distance (SSD) under limited visibility conditions to eliminate rear-end crash potentials at every time step. Both Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) data were used to derive visibility distance (VD) and SSD, respectively. Moreover, the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) method was adopted to predict both VD and SSD in estimating predictive HSIs, which would be used to trigger advanced warning information to encourage safer driving. The outcome of this study is also expected to be used for monitoring freeway traffic stream in terms of safety.
