Impact of Logistics 4.0 Technology Adoption on Logistics Performance: The Mediating Effect of Logistics Innovation Capability and the Mediated Moderation Effect of Firm Size

  • Purpose - This study aims to identify the relationship between logistics companies' Logistics 4.0 technology adoption with logistics innovation capability and logistics performance, and analyze the mediating effect of logistics innovation capability and the mediated moderation effect of firm size through logistics innovation capability. Design/methodology - Research models and hypotheses were established based on prior research related to Industry 4.0, Logistics 4.0, logistics technology, logistics performance, and firm size. The survey was conducted on the employees of logistics companies, and exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, discriminant validity analysis, structural equation model analysis, mediation effect, moderation effect, and the mediated moderation effect analysis were performed. Findings - The adoption of Logistics 4.0 technology was found to significantly affect logistics innovation capability and logistics performance. Logistics innovation capability was found to significantly affect logistics performance. Moreover, logistics innovation capability was found to have a significant mediation effect on the relationship between Logistics 4.0 technology adoption and logistics performance. The moderation effect based on firm size was found to have a partial effect on logistics innovation capability and logistics performance, but the mediated moderation effect was not significant. Originality/value - This study is meaningful in that it empirically analyzed the relationship of Logistics 4.0 technology adoption with logistics innovation capability and logistics performance, the mediating effect of logistics innovation capability, the moderation effect of firm size, and the mediated moderation effect of firm size, which were not addressed in previous studies.

  • The research purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the effects of technological readiness and innovation on logistics performance. To build up and maintain an important role in global supply chains, nowadays it is obvious that countries and logistics providers need to achieve competitive advantage in terms of digitalization. However, there is a lack of empirical studies about the impacts of information technologies and innovation potential on the logistics efficiency of countries. Hence, the study analyzes whether the corresponding pillars of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) matter for the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) and its dimensions. For determining the effects, the pooled regression approach is applied. The results show that technological readiness and innovation are positively and statistically significantly correlated with logistics performance: competence and quality of logistics services, efficiency of customs clearance processes, ability to track and trace consignments, frequency with which shipments reach consignee within scheduled or expected time, and ease of arranging competitively priced shipments. The findings of this study suggest that investments in innovations and technology progress improve countries' logistics efficiency, which is an important prerequisite for enabling Logistics 4.0 and thus, Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation of the economy and society.

  • Busan is Korea's No. 1 trading port, and the logistics industry plays an important role in the regional industry as a whole. In Busan, various efforts are being made to revitalize the port logistics industry, but it is necessary to develop various policies and related technologies linked with the 4th industry. In this study, we propose a smart refrigeration logistics center, which is required for the activation of Busan New Port and the new port of Pusan New Port, which is connected with the 4th industry. I would like to present the operation direction of the center.

  • The change of the development of transport and logistics systems occurs with the active change of technology and the advent of the era of Industry 4.0. It requires modernization of approaches to the development of transport and logistics systems at the macro and micro levels. The present study aims to identify perspective directions of development and evolution, find out the existing obstacles in the integration of technological solutions of transport and logistics systems at the macro and micro levels. This study is based on a quantitative and qualitative methodology for assessing the level of integration of technologies into transport and logistics systems to study the prospects for their development at the micro level. Macroeconomic indicators of transport and logistics in the context of different regions of the world were used to quantify the development prospects. For a qualitative assessment of the development of the transport and logistics system, the case study method was used. The object of the study was selected logistics company Sensco Logistics Inc., Austin TX. At the macro level, countries with more innovative logistics sectors have stronger mechanisms for coordinating private sector activities. Simplification of administrative procedures of control and regulation by the public sector in order to facilitate trade between countries is a promising direction for the development of transport and logistics systems. Such reforms are more effective in developing a "rigid" transport infrastructure. The integration of Industry 4.0 technology solutions into the international logistics sector is defined by political and legal barriers, especially in developing countries. In low-income countries, hard and soft infrastructure reforms are hindering the development of logistics companies that provide transport services. This determines the national level of development of transport and logistics systems, and in general the global level of development of transport and logistics. In developed countries, the legal barriers to the development of new technological logistics are environmental requirements for the integration of technologies into the transport system. These trends are slowing down the development of International Logistics, which, compared to other industries, is slower to integrate Industry 4.0 technologies. This study combines macroeconomic factors that determine the prospects for the development of transport and logistics systems at the micro level.

Flexible Operation of International Commercial Terms to Increase Logistics Efficiency in Logistics 4.0 (물류 4.0 시대에서 물류효율성 증대를 위한 인코텀즈 상 정형거래조건의 탄력적 운용방안 연구)

  • Recently, International commerce has continuously expanded with the development of logistics technology. However, the cost of international logistics is rising rapidly. The Korea International Trade Association (2021) proposes that the use of international commercial terms in Incoterms® could be an effective way against logistics costs. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect on the flexible operation of international commercial terms. For the detection of variables and data collection for empirical analysis based on previous studies and in-depth interviews. The questionnaires were distributed after pilot-study to a random sample of companies based on the list of members such as the Korea International Trade Association, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, and the Global Small and Medium Business Association. A total of 800 questionnaires were distributed, and 166 were used for empirical analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, mutual cooperation and Flexibly using of international commercial terms has a positive (+) effect on logistics efficiency. This is in line with the study of Yang (2021) and Stojanović et al. (2021) that logistics by using international commercial terms will increase the efficiency of logistics. Second, use of international commercial terms based on mutual understanding mediates the relationship between the logistics environment of the other country and the logistics efficiency. As in the study of Vidrova (2020), it is important to operate on international commercial terms mutually.

  • Logistics creates a boom in accordance with the recent new technique's development along with the recent RFID/USN of ubiquitous computing technique. The wave of 4PL(Fourth Party Logistics) that added the strategic consulting based on new IT techniques to logistics outsourcing through existing 3PL service with is a great issue. Moreover, the customer enterprises which contained manufacturers and distributors need the one stop service, therefore a method for effectively dealing with global logistics' environment changes is needed. Above all, a development of the 4PL system with RFID is very urgent. We developed the RFID u-4PL system progressed more than the present system, in which we applied many international standards. Finally, we constructed the web service based on Web 2.0 because of important condition of 4PL.

A Study on Locational Competitiveness Factor of Inland Logistics Complex in Gangwon (강원영동남부권 내륙물류기지 입지경쟁 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This res arch was conducted to identify a suitable location for an inland logistics complex in Gangwon Province, South Korea and it aims use competitive factors to derive implications from the logistics competitiveness of Gangwon Province. According to Origin-Destination analysis, the most suitable and desirable site for creating the complex was found to be in the Wonju city area. A total of 28 variable were derived through prior study in order to identify the competition factors for the inland logistics complex, As a result of exploratory factor analysis, a total of 16 subfactors were reclassified into four main factors. Analytic hierarchy process(AHP) analysis showed that 'accessibility factors' (0.374) ranked highest in terms of importance, followed by 'reliability factors' (0.358), 'operability factors' (0.166), and 'government policy factors' (0.102). In each category, delivery of goods from the inland logistics complex base to the demand site was found to be the most important factor (0.160).

  • This research is aimed to identify the building factors and deriving the importance of each factor for establishing the smart distribution center in the fourth industrial revolution era. The research methodology used CFPR(Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relations) to effectively extract expert knowledge. Research has shown as principle factors that "Service" is the first factor to be considered as 0.271, followed by "Infra(Warehouse)"(0.254), "Information System"(0.247), and "Equipment"(0.228). And as detailed factors, "Reliability" showed the highest importance as 0.091, followed "Visibility of Information System"(0.076), "Space Advancement"(0.075), "Location"(0.074) and "Satisfaction of service"(0.073). This study has implications in that it has presented an establishment direction for the smart distribution center.

The Data Envelopment Analysis of Global Logistics provider (글로벌물류기업의 효율성 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a benchmark of performance standards for Global Logistics Provider in the merging logistics market. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be employed to compare and analyse the efficiencies of Global Logistics Provider(3PL, 4PL). That is because Global Logistics Providers are able to reach the highest level of efficiency by using Logistics institutions and Logistics service systematically. This research is focused on analyzing the efficiencies of top 40 Global Logistics Providers. The framework assumes that the Providers use three inputs to produce one output. The inputs include number of employees information system, and number of warehouses. The output is the annual turnover. The results show that Panalpina, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Maersk Logistics/Damco, Hub Group, Lander Global Logistics on Global Logistics Providers are the efficient providers. This paper also allows the inefficient DMUs to establish their benchmarking strategies. The strategies are dependent on the assets such as number of employees, information system, and number of warehouses.

On the Consideration of Logistics Network Establishment and Priority Evaluation between Korea and China Using AHP method (AHP법을 이용한 한중간 물류네트워크 구축에 따른 우선과제 평가에 관한 연구)

  • It is an urgent problem that Korea logistics enteprises' expansion of advance into China market and the logistics network establishment between Korea and China to back up the former are to be solved. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to deduce the subjects to establish the logistics network between Korea and China, and to evaluate the priority order. The results of this research are as follows: First, we conducted face-to-face interviews on the advisery group in China and Korean enterprises which advanced into China, and drew out 6 promoting subjects to build the logistics network between the two. Second, the AHP model was adopted, which is a multi-criteria?multi-hierarchical decision making method, to draw out the weight and priority order of the deduced 6 promoting items. Third, the resultant priority order of the promoting subjects is as follows: No.1 - to establish the distribution & logistics support center by region(0.3900); No.2 - to support various taxes in investing the logistics business abroad(0.1980) ; No.3 - to improve the management of CIQ(0.1958); No.4 - to back up the joint-venture of logistics firms(0.1169); No.5 - to enhance trade and foreign policies to deregulate the entry into logistics markets(0.0536); No.6 - to construct the logistics information system of China(Northest Ssia)(0.0458). This paper resulted in finding out Korea logistics enterprises that have not secured their own inland-transport network in China and the actual difficulties of Korean enterprises with using the inferior network that advanced into China. These problems were developed into the analysis adopting the AHP method, and the significancy of this paper is to present the priority order of promoting problems using a sophisticated technique.
