We integrated and correlated datasets from surface and subsurface geophysics, drilling cores, and engineering geology to identify geological interfaces and characterize the joints and fracture zones within the rock mass. The regional geometry of a geologically weak zone was investigated via a fence projection of electrical resistivity data and a borehole image-processing system. Subsurface discontinuities and intensive fracture zones within the rock mass are delineated by cross-hole seismic tomography and analyses of dip directions in rose diagrams. The dynamic elastic modulus is studied in terms of the P-wave velocity and Poisson's ratio. Subsurface discontinuities, which are conventionally identified using the N value and from core samples, can now be identified from anomalous reflection coefficients (i.e., acoustic impedance contrast) calculated using a pair of well logs, comprising seismic velocity from suspension-PS logging and density from logging. Intensive fracture zones identified in the synthetic seismogram are matched to core loss zones in the drilling core data and to a high concentration of joints in the borehole imaging system. The upper boundaries of fracture zones are correlated to strongly negative amplitude in the synthetic trace, which is constructed by convolution of the optimal Ricker wavelet with a reflection coefficient. The standard deviations of dynamic elastic moduli are higher for fracture zones than for acompact rock mass, due to the wide range of velocities resulting from the large numbers of joints and fractures within the zone.
Using a discrete wavenumber method, we examine the effects on Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) logs when a mismatch exists between the amplitudes or generating times of the signals from individual monopoles in a LWD multipole source. An amplitude-mismatched LWD dipole/quadrupole source produces non-dipole/non-quadrupole modes as well as flexural and screw modes. The strongest of non-dipole/non-quadrupole modes is the Stoneley mode, whose amplitude increases with increasing mismatch. However, we can recover the flexural mode signals by A-C processing, and the screw mode by A-B+C-D processing, respectively. The Stoneley mode, which has the same amplitude at the same radial distance from the borehole axis, is cancelled out by A-C and A-B+C-D processing as long as the tool is placed at the centre of the borehole. The responses from a time-mismatched LWD multipole source look like the summation of responses by two or four monopole sources off the borehole axis. However, we can avoid the misinterpretation of the formation velocities by referring to the computed dispersion curves, which are independent of the arrival times of the modes, on the frequency semblance plot.

This paper reports the application of GPS (Global Positioning System) technique into the geotechnical information system. Typical example of such application can be the database of logging data. Other examples can be found from the surveying for road work, excavation work, landslide mapping and image processing of slope face. This paper also reports the enhancement method of the accuracy. The results from this study confirms that GPS could be a powerful tool for the future geotechnical investigation works in Korea.
To assess deep geological environment for the research and development of hish-level radioactive waste disposal, six boreholes of 3" in diameter were installed in two granitic areas. An areal extent of the rock block scale in the study sites was estimated by the lineament analysis from satellite images and shaded relief maps. The characterization of fracture system developed in rock block scale was carried out based on the acoustic televiewer logging in deep boreholes. In the Yuseong site, the granite rock mass was divided into the upper and lower zones at around -160m based on the probabilistic distribution characteristics of the geometric parameters such as orientation, fracture frequency, spacing and aperture size. Since the groundwater flow is dependent on the fracture system in a fractured rock mass, the correlation of the fracture frequency and cumulative aperture size to the hydraulic conductivity was also discussed.

Salesperson Monitoring System (SMS) is geographic based information system that supports business auditing, sales area coordinating and customer management for each salesperson. Conventional SMSs focus mainly on the monitoring or logging functions, i.e., a salesperson locating or moving trail tracking. However, the schedules have been planned by human planner, and they have rarely been managed with a software system like SMS. In this paper, a mixed integer programming model for a salesperson routing schedule is provided. Then, 2-phase Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to make salesperson routing schedule. Experimental results show a validity of the proposed method.
This paper describes a method of detecting formation boundaries, and permeable fractures, from frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs. Field data sets were collected between the depths of 330 and 360 m in well EE-4 in the Higashi-Hachimantai geothermal field, using a monopole acoustic logging tool with a source central frequency of 15 kHz. Stoneley wave amplitude spectra were calculated by performing a fast Fourier transform on the waveforms, and the spectra were then collected into a frequency-depth distribution of Stoneley wave amplitudes. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave log shows four main characteristic peaks at frequencies 6.5, 8.8, 12, and 13.3 kHz. The magnitudes of the Stoneley wave at these four frequencies are affected by formation properties. The Stoneley wave at higher frequencies (12 and 13.3 kHz) has higher amplitudes in hard formations than in soft formations, while the wave at lower frequencies (6.5 and 8.8 kHz) has higher amplitudes in soft formations than in hard formations. The correlation of the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log with the logs of lithology, degree of welding, and P-wave velocity is excellent, with all of them showing similar discontinuities at the depths of formation boundaries. It is obvious from these facts that the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log provides useful clues for detecting formation boundaries. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs are also applicable to the detection of a single permeable fracture. The procedure uses the Stoneley wave spectral amplitude logs at the four frequencies, and weighting functions. The optimally weighted sum of the four Stoneley wave spectral amplitudes becomes almost constant at all depths, except at the depth of a permeable fracture. The assumptions that underlie this procedure are that the energy of the Stoneley wave is conserved in continuous media, but that attenuation of the Stoneley wave may occur at a permeable fracture. This attenuation may take place at anyone of the four characteristic Stoneley wave frequencies. We think our multispectral approach is the only reliable method for the detection of permeable fractures.

The deep foundation is frequently used for the infrastructures. Since the quality control of the cast-in-place concrete foundations such as CIP piles and slurry walls is not so easy as that of the ready made PC(prestressed concrete) piles, it is necessary to get the information on the integrity of the concrete of the foundation. The depth estimation of foundations whose depths are unknown is also very important in repair and reinforcement works or in safety inspection and assessment to the big structures. The cross-hole sonic logging(CSL) system and the single channel reflection seismic measurement system were developed to test the integrity of pile. The former is well applied to CIP structures, while the later to all kinds of piles with less accurate result compared to that of CSL. To estimate the depth of the deep foundations, parallel seismics, borehole RADAR, and borehole magnetics can be used.

Storage Class Memory(SCM) has been considered as a next-generation storage device because it has positive advantages to be used both as a memory and storage. However, there are significant problems of data consistency in recently proposed file systems for SCM such as insufficient data consistency or excessive data consistency-control overhead. This paper proposes a novel data consistency-control scheme, which changes the write mode for log data depending on the modified data ratio in a block, using a rollback-recovery scheme instead of the Write Ahead Logging (WAL) scheme. The proposed scheme reduces the log data size and the synchronization cost for data consistency. In order to evaluate the proposed scheme, we implemented our scheme on a Linux 3.10.2-based system and measured its performance. The experimental results show that our scheme enhances the write throughput by 9 times on average when compared to the legacy data consistency control scheme.

In this paper, a Mobile Continuous Query Processing System (MCQPS) is designed to solve problems related to database hoarding, maintenance of shared data consistency, and optimization of logging. These problems are caused by weak connectivity and disconnection of wireless networks inherent in mobile database systems under mobile client-server environments. We show the superiority of the proposed MCQPS by comparing its performance to the Client-Intercept-Server (C-I-S) model. In addition, several experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed indexing structure and methodology for real-time continuous queries.
