  • A design of 2 stage S-DLVA(successive detector log video amplifier) was studied to detect wide dynamic radar pulse ranging from -70 ㏈m to 0㏈m. A basic design idea was focused on the linear detection in logarithmic scale of wide dynamic range radar pulses from nosie-like weak power of -70 ㏈m to relatively high power 0 ㏈m. It is highly formidable, since it requires high speed detection less than 10 nsec over the operating frequency ranges from 6 to 18 ㎓. A limiter diode, a tunnel diode and an L17-C were used as a protecting device, a detector diode and a log video amplifier in companion as a single stage detector to give voltage output proportional to the input power of about 35 ㏈ dynamic range. A protype of 2-stage DLVA having one more single stage detector was fabricated with a 32 ㏈ low noise amplifier and a 3 ㏈ hybrid coupler to provide total 70 ㏈ dynamic range detection. The logging characteristics were measured to have log slope of 25m.V/㏈ against 70 ㏈ logging range from -55 ㏈m to +15 ㏈m, the log linearity of within +/- 1.5 ㏈, and tangential sensitivity was at -63 ㏈m. The pulse dynamics of rise time and recovery time were measured as 50 nsec and 1.2 $\mu$sec, respectively. The reason might be due to the parasitic capacitances of packaged limiter, tunnel diode, and L17-C.

  • In this paper, the method to detect the IM(Inter Modulation) components of power amplifier is proposed by using frequency down-convertor. Output signals of power amplifier which is coupled by 20dB coupler and divided by power divider are applied to RF and LO of the frequency converter. It could be found the magnitude of IM components of power amplifier as a converted DC voltage which is come from the difference between 3th and 5th IM component. The detected DC voltage values are changed from 0.72V to 0.9V when 3rd IM component level changed from -26.4dBm to +2.15dBm and 5th IM component level changed from -34.2dBm to -12.89dBm as the Vgs of 3W power amplifier is changed.

  • In this paper, we implemented a HF-band magnetic-field communication system consisting of an amplitude shift keying(ASK) transmitter, a pair of loop antennas, and an ASK receiver. Especially, we suggested a new ASK transmitter architecture, where a drain bias of class E amplifier is switched alternatively between two voltage levels with respect to input data. A maximum 5 W class E amplifier was designed using a low cost IRF510 power MOSFET at the frequency of 6.78 MHz. A measured sensitivity of the designed ASK receiver is -78 dBm, which consists of a log amplifier, a filter, and a comparator. Maximum communication range of magnetic-wave communication system with loop antennas was calculated using magnetic field equations in both near-field and far-field ranges. Also, in order to verify the calculated values, an indoor propagation loss was measured using a pair of loop antennas whose dimensions are $30{\times}30cm$. Maximum operating range is estimated about 35 m in case of transmitter's output power of 1 W and receiver sensitivity of -70 dBm, respectively. Finally, the communication field test using the designed ASK transmitter and receiver was successfully done at the distance of 5 m.

  • We designed and fabricated a semiconductor optical amplifier-integrated dual-mode laser (SOA-DML) as a compact and widely tunable continuous-wave terahertz (CW THz) beat source, and a pin-photodiode (pin-PD) integrated with a log-periodic planar antenna as a CW THz emitter. The SOA-DML chip consists of two distributed feedback lasers, a phase section for a tunable beat source, an amplifier, and a tapered spot-size converter for high output power and fiber-coupling efficiency. The SOA-DML module exhibits an output power of more than 15 dBm and clear four-wave mixing throughout the entire tuning range. Using integrated micro-heaters, we were able to tune the optical beat frequency from 380 GHz to 1,120 GHz. In addition, the effect of benzocyclobutene polymer in the antenna design of a pin-PD was considered. Furthermore, a dual active photodiode (PD) for high output power was designed, resulting in a 1.7-fold increase in efficiency compared with a single active PD at 220 GHz. Finally, herein we successfully show the feasibility of the CW THz system by demonstrating THz frequency-domain spectroscopy of an ${\alpha}$-lactose pellet using the modularized SOA-DML and a PD emitter.

  • To compensate the nonlinearity of electroabsorption modulator(EAM) resulting from its near exponential transfer function, a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) that has a log transfer function is used. Since the transfer function of SOA is inverse to that of EAM, the intermodulation distortion(IMD) of EAM can be reduced by cascading SOA to EAM. Also, the RF gain can be increased by the optical gain of SOA. For these reasons, spurious free dynamic range(SFDR) of EAM is enhanced by connecting SOA to EAM in series and operating in gain salutation region. To improve the nonlinearity compensation of EAM, the increased gain of SOA is required and the slope of gain saturation, the ratio of gain to input SOA power, needs to be steep. However, signal spontaneous beat noise that is the dominant system noise increases in proportion to the gain such that the SFDR of EAM is reduced. The higher the gain of SOA is, the more ASE is increased. Thus the noise level of system is increased and the following SFDR of EAM is decreased. The slope of gain saturation region and ASE of have trade-off relation and the optimization is achieved at 8㏈ optical gain. 9㏈ enhancement of SFDR of EAM is obtained. This scheme is easy to embody the linear EAM and the integration with three components (DFB-LD, EAM and SOA) offers many merits, such as low insertion loss, low chirping and low polarization sensitivity.

  • Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas have pioneered a new field of plasma for biomedical application bridging plasma physics and biology. Biological and medical applications of plasmas have attracted considerable attention due to promising applications in medicine such as electro-surgery, dentistry, skin care and sterilization of heat-sensitive medical instruments [1]. Traditional approaches using electronic devices have limits in heating, high voltage shock, and high current shock for patients. It is a great demand for plasma medical industrial acceptance that the plasma generation device should be compact, inexpensive, and safe for patients. Microwave-excited micro-plasma has the highest feasibility compared with other types of plasma sources since it has the advantages of low power, low voltage, safety from high-voltage shock, electromagnetic compatibility, and long lifetime due to the low energy of striking ions [2]. Recent experiment [2] shows three-log reduction within 180-s treatment of S. mutans with a low-power palm-size microwave power module for biomedical application. Experiments using microwave plasma are discussed. This low-power palm-size microwave power module board includes a power amplifier (PA) chip, a phase locked loop (PLL) chip, and an impedance matching network. As it has been a success, more compact-size module is needed for the portability of microwave devices and for the various medical applications of microwave plasma source. For the plasma generator, a 1.35-GHz coaxial transmission line resonator (CTLR) [3] is used. The way of reducing the size and enhancing the performances of the module is examined.

  • Efforts to employ smart home sensors to monitor the indoor activities of elderly single residents have been made to assess the feasibility of a safe and healthy lifestyle. However, the bathroom remains an area of blind spot. In this study, we have developed and evaluated a new edge computer device that can automatically detect water usage activities in the bathroom and record the activity log on a cloud server. Three kinds of sound as flushing, showering, and washing using wash basin generated during water usage were recorded and cut into 1-second scenes. These sound clips were then converted into a 2-dimensional image using MEL-spectrogram. Sound data augmentation techniques were adopted to obtain better learning effect from smaller number of data sets. These techniques, some of which are applied in time domain and others in frequency domain, increased the number of training data set by 30 times. A deep learning model, called CRNN, combining Convolutional Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network was employed. The edge device was implemented using Raspberry Pi 4 and was equipped with a condenser microphone and amplifier to run the pre-trained model in real-time. The detected activities were recorded as text-based activity logs on a Firebase server. Performance was evaluated in two bathrooms for the three water usage activities, resulting in an accuracy of 96.1% and 88.2%, and F1 Score of 96.1% and 87.8%, respectively. Most of the classification errors were observed in the water sound from washing. In conclusion, this system demonstrates the potential for use in recording the activities as a lifelog of elderly single residents to a cloud server over the long-term.
