This paper describes a localization method based on Monte Carlo Localization approach for a mobile robot. The method uses range data which are measured from ultrasound transmitting beacons whose locations are given a priori. The ultrasound receiver on-board a robot detects the range from the beacons. The method requires several beacons, theoretically over three. The method proposes a sensor model for the range sensing based on statistical analysis of the sensor output. The experiment uses commercialized beacons and detector which are used for trilateration localization. The performance of the proposed method is verified through real implementation. Especially, it is shown that the performance of the localization degrades as the sensor update rate decreases compared with the MCL algorithm update rate. Though the method requires exact location of the beacons, it doesn't require geometrical map information of the environment. Also, it is applicable to estimation of the location of both the beacons and robot simultaneously.

Algorithms for geographical routing and location update attract the researchers' interests in wireless ad hoc networks. Even though many various schemes have been proposed, most of them cause scalability problem in small groups of nodes. To defeat this problem, flooding algorithm is widely utilized due to low complexity. However, there is no previous research work to evaluate flooding algorithm through implementation instead of simulation. In this paper, we present implementation of flooding algorithm on Raspberry Pi and performance evaluation results.

The assignment of cells to reporting or non-reporting cells is an NP-hard problem having an exponential complexity in the Reporting Cell Location Management (RCLM) system. Frequent location update may result in degradation of quality of service due to interference. Miss on the location of a mobile terminal will necessitate a search operation on the network when a call comes in. The number of reporting cells and which cell must be reporting cell should be determined to balance the registration (location update) and search (paging) operations to minimize the cost of RCLM system. T1is paper compares Max-Min ant system (MMAS), rank-based ant system (RAS) and hybrid method of MMAS and RAS that generally used to solve combinatorial optimization problems. Experimental results demonstrate that hybrid method of MMAS and RAS is an effective and competitive approach in fairly satisfactory results with respect to solution quality and execution time for the optimal design of location management system.
This study deals with the location management in WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) networks. The new location management method is the one of the many techniques used to provide the packet switched (PS) services effectively in WCDMA networks. WCDMA introduces RA (routing area) for the PS services in addition to LA (location area) for the circuit switched (CS) services. WCDMA system also adopts the cooperative paging and the combined area update which are to decrease signaling traffic using the PS network resources for the CS services. Considering the characteristics of the WCDMA networks, this study formulate into the mathematical programming problem for the location management. Rather than the existing researches which consider the single MSC/SGSN networks, we deal with the multi MSC/SGSN networks, where both MSC area and SGSN area should be determined as well. Fairness between traffic loads of MSC/SGSN and the system cost incurred to MSC/SGSN are also incorporated into our model, which make the model more realistic. We propose greedy algorithms for the problems, which consists of the merger of two neighboring areas and the movement of an area. Extensive experiment has been done based on the realistic problem examples. Followed by the analysis of parameter effect on the final solutions and the quality of final solutions obtained by our greedy algorithms. Our proposed model and analysis result can be used to determine WCDMA system areas and to predict the system performance measures by the determination.

In mobile communication systems, location management deals with the location determination of users in a network. One of the strategies used in location management is to partition the network into location areas. Each location area consists of a group of cells. The goal of location management is to partition the network into a number of location areas such that the total paging cost and handoff (or update) cost is a minimum. Finding the optimal number of location areas and the corresponding configuration of the partitioned network is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. This cell grouping problem is to find a compromise between the location update and paging operations such that the cost of mobile terminal location tracking is a minimum in location area wireless network. In fact, this is shown to be an NP-complete problem in an earlier study. In this paper, artificial bee colony (ABC) is developed and proposed to obtain the best/optimal group of cells for location area planning for location management system. The performance of the artificial bee colony (ABC) is better than or similar to those of other population-based algorithms with the advantage of employing fewer control parameters. The important control parameter of ABC is only 'Limit' which is the number of trials after which a food source is assumed to be abandoned. Simulation results for 16, 36, and 64 cell grouping problems in wireless network show that the performance of our ABC is better than those alternatives such as ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO).
The development in the mobile computing systems have arisen new and previously unforeseen problems, such as problems in information management of mobile host, disconnection of mobile host and low bandwidths of wireless communications. Especially, location information management strategy of mobile host results in an increased overhead in mobile computing systems. Due to the mobility of the mobiles host, the changes in the mobile host's address depends on the mobile host's location, and is maintained by mapping physical address on virtual address, Since previously suggested several strategies for mapping method between physical address and virtual address did not tackle the increase of mobile host and distribution of location information, it was not able to support the scalability in mobile computing systems. Thus, to distribute the location inrormation, we propose an advanced n-depth LiST (Location information Search Tree) and the parallel location search and update strategy based on the advanced n-depth LiST. The advanced n-depth LiST is logically a hierarchical structure that clusters the location information server by ring structure and reduces the location information search and update cost by parallel seatch and updated method. The experiment shows that even though the distance of two MHs that communicate with each other is large, due to the strnctural distribution of location information, advanced n-depth LiST results in good performance. Moreover, despite the reduction in the location information search cost, there was no increase in the location information update cost.

In this paper, we propose a multi-state based hybrid location update scheme, which integrates the time-based and the movement-based methods. In the proposed scheme, a mobile terminal updates its location after n cell boundary crossing and a time interval of T[sec]. We derive an analytical solution for the performance of the hybrid scheme with exponential cell resident time and evaluate it numerically with time-varying random walk mobility model, which we model as multi-states Markov chain. Furthermore, we also evaluate the scheme for arbitrary cell resident times by simulation. From the numerical analysis and the simulation results, we prove that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the time-based and the movement-based methods, when implemented alone, more accurately adapting to the time-varying user mobility.
Moving objects are spatiotemporal data that location and shape of spatial objects are changed continuously over time. If spatiotemporal moving objects are managed by conventional database system, moving objects management systems have two problems as follows. First, update for location information changed over time is occurred frequently. Second, past and future information of moving objects are not provided by system because only current state of objects is stored in the system. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal moving objects management system which is able to not only manage historical information of moving objects without frequent update, but also provide all location information about past, current, and near future. In the proposed system, information of moving objects are divided into location information for representing location and motion information for representing moving habits. Especially, we propose the method which can search location information all objects by use of changing process algorithms with minimum history information. Finally, we applied the proposed method to battlefield analysis system, as the result of experiment, we knew that past, current, and near future location information for moving objects are managed by relational database and GIS system.
Binding update for the routing optimization in MIPv6 can make the involved nodes vulnerable to various attacks. Therefore, secure binding update becomes an important research issue in MIPv6, and several protocols have been proposed for this purpose. In this paper, we compare several existing binding update protocols such as RR, SUCV and OMIPv6 and analyze the vulnerability of nodes to the possible attacks and drawbacks of address management and scalability and overhead of encryption operations. Then, we suggest the design requirements for the secure binding update and propose an advanced protocol based on the design principle. Through the analysis, we show that our protocol can achieve a higher level of security against the various attacks and enable better management of address, provide the location privacy and reduce the computational overhead of mobile nodes with constraint computational power.

With the increasing number of subscribers in the mobile communication, the reduction of the cell size and the increment of roaming frequency have increased the cost of location management. In order to reduce the cost of location management, we propose a new strategy of location management. In this scheme, whether the terminal executes location update or not is decided both by the call arrival probability in a new LA and by the number of location updates which are unexecuted despite that the terminal moved into a new LA. The call arrival probability is computed using the predicted information about the terminal mobility pattern. We simulated to evaluate our strategy's performance. In the high mobility prediction level, this scheme reduces the cost of location update considerably. Even though it is in the low mobility prediction level, the cost does not exceed that of IS-41 at most. This scheme also showed better performance, compared with that of AS(Alternative Strategy) which requires an overhead such as predicted information maintenance.
