  • In this study, we investigates active control technology to reduce the noise transmitted to the outside through the opening of enclosures. A numerical model based on acoustic boundary element method is first established. Using the numerical model, the acoustic transfer functions of the field points over the opening to the primary source at arbitrary locations are estimated. The feedforward control to minimize the acoustic power through the opening is then numerically implemented. The controller generates the secondary source to destructively interfere the noise transmission through the opening. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effects of the location and the number of the microphones on the control performance. Furthermore, the effects of the location of the secondary source on the performance of active noise control are investigated. It is followed that the control system implemented in this study leads to a significant reduction of about 35dB in sound power through the open using only on secondary source located at the optimized position.

  • This study is aimed to investigate on the structural properties(like as strength, failure mode, ductility) of beams with multiple openings reinforced with steel tube of circular. The main parameters are follows ;1)location of openings, 2)the number of opening, 3) existence of opening or not. When the locations of opening are respectively maximal moment zone, maximal shear zone, co-existence zone of moment and shear, the specimen with opening at maximal moment zone is not less than that without opening in terms of strength and ductility. The specimens with opening at shear zone and both zones are expected to carry the structural performance corresponding to beam without opening by varying the number and reinforcing method of opening.

  • The numerical investigations have been carried out on deep beam with opening subjected to static monotonic loading to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element based numerical models. The simulations were carried out through finite element program ABAQUS/CAE and the results thus obtained were validated with the experiments available in literature. Six simply supported beams were modelled with two square openings of 200 and 250 mm sides considered as opening at centre, top and bottom of the beam. In order to define the material behaviour of concrete and reinforcing steel bar the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model and Johnson-Cook material parameters available in literature were employed. The numerical results were compared with the experiments in terms of ultimate failure load, displacement and von-Mises stresses. In addition to that, seventeen beams were simulated under static loading for studying the effect of opening location, size and shape of the opening and depth, span and shear span to depth ratio of the deep beam. In general, the numerical results accurately predicted the pattern of deformation and displacement and found in good agreement with the experiments. It was concluded that the structural response of deep beam was primarily dependent on the degree of interruption of the natural load path. An increase in opening size from 200 to 250 mm size resulted in an average shear strength reduction of 35%. The deep beams having circular openings undergo lesser deflection and thus they are preferable than square openings. An increase in depth from 500 mm to 550 mm resulted in 78% reduced deflection.

  • The behavior of backdraft in the compartment with different ignition locations and times was numerically investigated. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) v5.5.3 with a model-free simulation option was used in the numerical simulation of backdraft. The ignition source was located near the inside wall, at the compartment center and near the window opening, respectively. The ignition was started at the instance when the fresh air reached the ignition location or when a sufficient time passed compare to the instance of the arriving of the fresh air to the ignition location. As a result, for the ignition source was located near the inside wall, a strong fire ball was observed at once and the result was similar to the previous experimental result. For the ignition source was located at the center of the compartment, a strong fire ball was occurred and two strong fire balls were observed consecutively for the ignition time was delayed. For the ignition source was located near the window opening and longer time was given for the ignition compare the duration of the fresh air arriving to the ignition location, the rapid temperature variation was not observed because there was no flame. However, for the ignition was started at the instance when the fresh air reached the ignition location, the ignition could be initiated and a intensive fire ball was observed. The pressure measured at the upper inside part of the window opening provided a similar trend with the previous experimental result of compartment backdraft.

  • The shear behavior and strength of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams with web opening subject to concentrated loads have been investigated experimentally on the effects of structural parameters such as location of web opening and reinforcements. A total of 12 specimens were tested at the laboratory under two-point top loading. The shear span-to-depth ratio was taken constantly 0.8, and various types of reinforcements based on truss models were adopted. In the tests, the effects of location, reinforcements of web openings on the shear behavior, and crack initiation and propagation have been carefully checked and analyzed. The test results have been compared with the formulas proposed currently being used and analyzed by nonlinear finite element method. Shear strengths obtained from the tests showed good matches with Kong and Ray's equation, and also with the results calculated by nonlinear finite element method.

  • This study examined sewing methods used to reinforce the opening of clothes of the Joseon period. Through the analysis of a total of 117 clothing items of the Joseon period, the following results were obtained. 1. Most costumes of the Joseon period had the opening. The purpose of the opening was to allow one to put on and take off a costume, act comfortably, and turn a costume Inside out. The opening was located on the Side, Conte. Back, fgwi(Side opening of pants), Wristband, Armhole, and Godae(the bark part of the collar). 2. As the opening tended to get easily worn out, it was often reinforced. The 1911owing three methods were used to reinforce the opening of clothing items of the Joseon period: a method to attach a cloth such as Dang, Binding, and Badae; a method using a variety of knots; and a method by sewing stitches such as a sort of cross stitch called Satteugi, Prick stitch, and Loop. 3. The most frequently used reinforcing method was the one that used a knot(34 items), followed by the one by sewing Satteugi(27 items), and the one using Dang(25items). The most frequently detected location of the opening was Side(59 items), followed by Agui(37 items), Wristband(19 items), and Center Back(13 items). 4. The reinforced opening made a costume more endurable and elastic, decorative and neat.

  • It is necessary to drill new opening in an existing R.C beam either for service ducts and pipes or the determination of in place concrete strength. Therefore, to simulate in this study, 18-R.C beams were fabricated with circular openings. The major parameters considered are the sizes, location of opening and cut-off stirrup. These beams are tested shear failure and capacity under a point loading. The sizes of opening are changed 0.11, 0.2, 0.3 times of beam-depth and the locations of opening are divided into $X_1$ zone, $X_2$ zone, $X_3$zone. Loads are applied up to failure to observe the cracking initiation and propagation, initial diagonal cracking, midspan deflection. As a result, the sizes of opening with 0.11D and 0.2D in R.C beams without cutoff stirrup are profitable in $X_1$ and $X_3$zone. R.C beams with 0.3D and cutoff stirrup are advantageous in $X_3$zone.

  • An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.
