In this paper, a theoretical and numerical study on bridge simultaneous damage detection procedure for identifying both the system parameters and input excitation mass, are presented. This method is called 'Adjoint Variable Method' which is an iterative gradient-based model updating method based on the dynamic response sensitivity. The main advantage of proposed method is inclusion of an analytical method to augment the accuracy and speed of the solution. Moving mass is a model which takes into account the inertia effects of the vehicle. This interaction model is a time varying system and proposed method is capable of detecting damage in this variable system. Robustness of proposed method is illustrated by correctly detection of the location and extension of predetermined single, multiple and random damages in all ranges of speed and mass ratio of moving vehicle. A comparison study of common sensitivity and proposed method confirms its efficiency and performance improvement in sensitivity-based damage detection methods. Various sources of errors including the effects of measurement noise and initial assumption error in stability of method are also discussed.
Non-destructive testing methods of composite materials are very important for improving material reliability and safety. AE measurement is based on the detection of microscopic surface movements from stress waves in a material during the fracture process. The examination of AE is a useful tool for the sensitive detection and location of active damage in polymer and composite materials. FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors have attracted much interest owing to the important advantages of optical fiber sensing. Compared to conventional electronic sensors, fiber-optical sensors are known for their high resolution and high accuracy. Furthermore, they offer important advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, and electrically passive operation. In this paper, the crack detection capability of AE (Acoustic Emission) measurement was compared with that of an FBG sensor under tensile testing and buckling test of composite materials. The AE signals of the PVDF sensor were measured and an AE signal analyzer, which had a low pass filter and a resonance filter, was designed and fabricated. Also, the wavelength variation of the FBG sensor was measured and its strain was calculated. Calculated strains were compared with those determined by finite element analysis.
Damage detection using structural classical deflection flexibility has received considerable attention due to the unique features of the flexibility in the last two decades. However, for relatively complex structures, most methods based on classical deflection flexibility fail to locate damage sites to the exact members. In this study, for structures whose members are dominated by axial forces, such as truss structures, a more feasible flexibility for damage detection is proposed, which is called the Axial Strain (AS) flexibility. It is synthesized from measured modal frequencies and axial strain mode shapes which are expressed in terms of translational mode shapes. A damage indicator based on AS flexibility is proposed. In addition, how to integrate the AS flexibility into the Damage Location Vector (DLV) approach (Bernal and Gunes 2004) to improve its performance of damage localization is presented. The methods based on AS flexbility localize multiple damages to the exact members and they are suitable for the cases where the baseline data of the intact structure is not available. The proposed methods are demonstrated by numerical simulations of a 14-bay planar truss and a five-story steel frame and experiments on a five-story steel frame.
In this research a theoretical and numerical study on a bridge damage detection procedure is presented based on vibration measurements collected from a set of accelerometers. This method, referred to as "Adjoint Variable Method", is a sensitivity-based finite element model updating method. The approach relies on minimizing a penalty function, which usually consists of the errors between the measured quantities and the corresponding predictions attained from the model. Moving mass is an interactive model and includes inertia effects between the model and mass. This interactive model is a time varying system and the proposed method is capable of detecting damage in this variable system. Robustness of the proposed method is illustrated by correct detection of the location and extension of predetermined single, multiple and random damages in all ranges of speed and mass ratio of moving vehicle. A comparative study on common sensitivity and the proposed method confirms its efficiency and performance improvement in sensitivity-based damage detection methods. In addition various possible sources of error, including the effects of measurement noise and initial assumption error in stability of method are also discussed.

Partial discharges (PD) have long been recognized as a major contributing factor to catastrophic failures in high-power equipment. As the demand for high voltage direct current (HVDC) facilities continues to rise, the significance of on-line and real-time monitoring of PD becomes increasingly prominent. In this study, we have designed, fabricated, and characterized a highly sensitive and cost-effective PD sensor comprising a pair of copper electrodes with different arc lengths. The key advantage of our sensor is its non-invasive nature, as it can be installed at any location along the entire power cable without requiring structural modifications. In contrast, conventional PD sensors are typically limited to installation at cable terminals or insulation joint boxes, often necessitating invasive alterations. Our PD sensor demonstrates exceptional accuracy in estimating PD location, with a success rate exceeding 95% in the straight sections of the power cable and surpassing 89% in curved sections. These remarkable characteristics indicate its high potential for realtime and on-line detection of PD.

In this paper, a new detection algorithm was proposed for finding the position of lenslet array spot pattern used to acquire laser wavefront. Based on the analysis of the required signal processing characteristics, we categorized into and designed four main signal processing functions. The proposed was designed in order to have robust feature against a variation of geometrical form of the spot and also implemented to have semi-automatic thresholding capability based on CCD noise analysis. For performance evaluation, we made qualitative and quantitative comparisons with Carvalho's algorithm which has been published in recent. In the given experimental spot images, the proposed could detect the spots which has 1/3 times lower than the least S/N of which Carvalho's can detect and could reach to a detection precision of 0.1 pixel at the S/N. In functional aspect, the proposed could separate all valid spots locally. From these results, the proposed could have a superior precision of location detection of spot pattern in wider S/N range.

Measuring defects on the inside and on the surface of a steel structure is very important technology in order to predict the life span of the structure. In particular, a place with a high probability that it may contain defects is a welded part and it is very important to check defects in the part, absence/presence of non-uniform substances, its shape, and the location. Many non-destructive tests can be applied, but the ultrasonic flow detection test is widely used with some advantages. The ultrasonic flow detection test, however, cannot be applied when there is a problem by a contact medium between PZT and a specimen, in case of a small and complicated shape or a moving object or when the specimen is hot. In this study, to solve the problems of the contact ultrasonic flow detection test, the non-contact ultrasonic flow detection test for sending/receiving ultrasonic waves using lasers was described. I intended to develop a non-destructive detection system applying the laser application ultrasonic test to a steel structure by detecting the defects inside of and on the surface of the specimen.

An efficient optimization algorithm and damage-sensitive objective function are two main components in optimization-based Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU). A suitable combination of these components can considerably affect damage detection accuracy. In this study, a new hybrid damage-sensitive objective function is proposed based on combining two different objection functions to detect the location and extent of damage in structures. The first one is based on Generalized Pseudo Modal Strain Energy (GPMSE), and the second is based on the element's Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM). Four well-known population-based metaheuristic algorithms are used to solve the problem and report the optimal solution as damage detection results. These algorithms consist of Cuckoo Search (CS), Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Moth Flame Optimization (MFO), and Jaya. Three numerical examples and one experimental study are studied to illustrate the capability of the proposed method. The performance of the considered metaheuristics is also compared with each other to choose the most suitable optimizer in structural damage detection. The numerical examinations on truss and frame structures with considering the effects of measurement noise and availability of only the first few vibrating modes reveal the good performance of the proposed technique in identifying damage locations and their severities. Experimental examinations on a six-story shear building structure tested on a shake table also indicate that this method can be considered as a suitable technique for damage assessment of shear building structures.

When the disaster like earthquake in urban area occur, due to the collapse accidents for subway, tunnel space with buildings or underground area, enormous property and human damage are happened. Specially, since it is difficult to identify survived status of humans within collapsed debris and accurately buried locations of the humans, inputs of considerable time and manpower for rescuing them are required. Besides, secondary damage can be occurred by additional collapses. The aim of this study is to propose a stochastic location positioning method that enables to provide aid information by determining locations of mobile devices for buried persons in 2-D plane using wireless communication technologies. This study selected a detection method for buried persons based on Wi-Fi signal, and identified characteristics of signal strengths by distance unit. Using these methods, a stochastic location detection model in 2-D plane was built. It is expected that this technology will be utilized as a core technology that can protects safety and human life of the public by providing data for rescuing quickly buried persons in cases of national disasters for future.

Acoustic Emission(AE) technique has been applied to not only material characterization evaluation but also on-line monitoring of the structural integrity. The AE source location technique is very important to identify the source, such as crack, leak detection. Since the AE waveforms obtained from sensors are very difficult to distinguish the defect signals, therefore, it is necessary to consider the signal analysis of the transient wave-form. In this study, we have divided the region of interest into a set finite elements, and calculated the arrival time differences between sensors by using the velocities at every degree from 0 to 90. A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission in fiberboard plates has been studied by introducing Wavelet Transform(WT) do-noising technique. WT is a powerful tool for processing transient signals with temporally varying spectra. If the WT de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the errors of source location in fiberboard plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved.
