This paper presents the design of an algorithm to detect, identify, and locate faults in radial distribution feeders of Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA). The algorithm consists of three major steps. First, the adaptive algorithm is applied to track/estimate the system electrical parameter, i.e. current phasor, voltage phasor, and impedance. Next process, the impedance rule base is used to detect and identify the type of fault. Finally, the current compensation technique and a geographic information system (GIS) are applied to evaluate a possible fault location. The paper also shows the results from field tests of the automate fault location and illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed fault location scheme.
In this paper, we have proposed a M&S tool for analyzing detection coverage and target localization in bistatic radar system. The detection coverage determined by radar parameters is meaningful when it satisfies the clear line-of-sight condition. We improved the method to find the minimum altitudes of transmitter and receiver for meeting the condition by considering three-dimensional coverage. Its computational burden is not problematic because the calculation is for maximizing the performance of the radar and does not demand a real-time operation. In addition, target localization on three-dimensional earth model based on the information of the height, longitude, and latitude is proposed instead of the previous unpractical calculation on two-dimensional bistatic plane. Its precalculated result can reduce its computation burden and it is suitable for real-time estimation of target location.
Detection and localization of partial discharge are considered critical techniques for estimating the lifetimes of power cables. High-frequency current transformers (HFCTs) are commonly used for the detection of partial discharge in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) power cables; however, their applicability is compromised by the limitations of the installation locations. HFCTs are typically installed in cable terminals or insulation joint boxes because HVACs induce strong time-varying magnetic fields around the cables, saturating the ferromagnetic materials in the HFCTs. Therefore, partial discharges near the installation locations can be detected. In this study, the feasibility of partial discharge detection using a HFCT was investigated for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. We demonstrated that the HFCT could be installed at any location in the HVDC power cable to monitor partial discharge along the entire cable length. Furthermore, we showed that the HFCT could detect the location of partial discharge with high accuracy.
A variety of methods for detecting the location of an underground water pipeline are being used across the world; the current main methods used in South Korea, however, have the problems of low precision and efficiency and the limitations in actual application. On this, this study developed locator capable of detecting the location of a water pipe by the use of an IMU sensor, and technology for using the extended karman filter to correct error in location detection and to plot the location on the coordinate system. This study carried out a tract test and a road test as basic experiments to measure the performance of the developed technology and equipment. As a result of the straight line, circular and ellipse track tests, the 1750 IMU sensor showed the average error of 0.08-0.11%; and thus it was found that the developed locator can detect a location precisely. As a result of the 859.6-m road test, it was found that the error was 0.31 m in case the moving rate of the sensor was 0.3-0.6 m/s; and thus it was judged that the equipment developed by this study can be applied to long-distance water pipes of over 1 km sufficiently. It is planned to evaluate its field applicability in the future through an actual pipe network pilot test, and it is expected that locator capable of detecting the location of a water pipe more precisely will be developed through research for the enhancement of accuracy in the algorithm of location detection.

This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for the fault location estimation and arcing fault detection when a single-phase arcing ground fault occurs on a transmission line. The proposed algorithm derived in the spectrum domain is based on the synchronized voltage and current samples measured from the PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) installed at both ends of the transmission lines. In this paper, the algorithm uses DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) for estimation. The algorithm uses a short data window for real-time transmission line protection. Also, from the calculated arc voltage amplitude, a decision can be made whether the fault is permanent or transient. The proposed algorithm is tested through computer simulation to show its effectiveness.
This paper presents methods of robot localization using recent radio frequency identification technology. If the absolute position and orientation of a tag are given in an indoor environment where RFID tags are installed, a robot can estimate its location using the relationship of the identified tag and the robot in a relative coordinate. To derive this relationship, we propose three estimation techniques using a model of a RFID reader, the direction of identification and the detection range. In this algorithm, a suitable estimation method is selected out of the three proposed techniques depending on the situations and trajectory of robot in the detection range. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed methods can provide good performance for localization.

Drone detection can be considered as a specific sort of small object detection, which has always been a challenge because of its small size and few features. For improving the detection rate of drones, we design a Deeper SSD network, which uses large-scale input image and deeper convolutional network to obtain more features that benefit small object classification. At the same time, in order to improve object classification performance, we implemented the up-sampling modules to increase the number of features for the low-level feature map. In addition, in order to improve object location performance, we adopted the down-sampling modules so that the context information can be used by the high-level feature map directly. Our proposed Deeper SSD and its variants are successfully applied to the self-designed drone datasets. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the Deeper SSD and its variants, which are useful to small drone's detection and recognition. These proposed methods can also detect small and large objects simultaneously.
This paper presents the processing of nonlinear features associated with a damage event by quadratic time-frequency distributions for damage identification in a frame structure. A time-frequency distribution is a function which distributes the total energy of a signal at a particular time and frequency point. As the occurrence of damage often gives rise to non-stationary, nonlinear structural behavior, simultaneous representation of the dynamic response in the time-frequency plane offers valuable insight for damage detection. The applicability of the bilinear time-frequency distributions of the Cohen class is examined for the damage assessment of a frame structure from the simulated acceleration data. It is shown that the changes in instantaneous energy of the dynamic response could be a good damage indicator. Presence and location of damage can be identified using Choi-Williams distribution when damping is ignored. However, in the presence of damping the Page distribution is more effective and offers better readability for structural damage detection.
The awareness of boundaries in wireless sensor networks has many benefits. The identification of boundaries is especially challenging since typical wireless sensor networks consist of low-capability nodes that are unaware of their geographic location. In this paper, we propose a simple, efficient algorithm to detect nodes that are near the boundary of the sensor field as well as near the boundaries of holes. Our algorithm relies purely on the connectivity information of the underlying communication graph and does not require any information on the location of nodes. We introduce the 2-neighbor graph concept, and then make use of it to identify nodes near boundaries. The results of our experiment show that our algorithm carries out the task of topological boundary detection correctly and efficiently.
