In personal communication systems location management of mobile terminals is required to connect incoming calls to the mobile terminals. Investigation of effective location update and paging strategies is important to reduce the cost of location management. In this study, we propose a paging strategy considering the mobile terminals' residence patterns. The first paging area is characterized by the set of cells in the location area where mobile terminals usually stay for a significant period of time. The rest of cells in the location area are included into the second paging area. To reduce the paging cost the first paging area is decided by reflecting various residence patterns of mobile terminals. For an incoming call, the sequential paging is performed in the order of the paging area. Thus the paging cost is greatly reduced, especially when the called mobile terminal is located in the first paging area. The proposed strategy is expected to be more effective than an existing strategy that uses the anchor cell in the location area.
Location management is very important issue in wireless communication system to trace mobile users' exact location. In this study, we propose a dynamic location area management scheme which determines the size of dynamic location area considering each user's characteristics. In determining the optimal location area size, we consider the measurement data as well as the historical data, which contains call arrival rate and average speed of each mobile user. In this mixture of data, the weight of historical data is derived by linear searching method which guarantees the minimal cost of location management. We also introduce the regularity index which can be calculated by using the autocorrelation of historical data itself. Statistical validation shows that the regularity index is the same as the weight of measurement data. As a result, the regularity index is utilized to incorporate the historical data into the measurement data. By applying the proposed scheme, the location management cost is shown to decrease. Numerical examples illustrate such an aspect of the proposed scheme.

With rapid growth of industry, underground power delivery systems are growing so rapidly and its capacity also growing. So if there are any accident in underground power cable, its inference is too great to count. So power system operators should find Its fault location as soon as possible and replace it But it is difficult to find its fault location for underground power cable. We are developing fault location system for underground power cable which can detect its fault location exactly. This system usually monitor underground power cable on-line But if there are an accident, it record Its transient signal and we can calculate fault location by analyzing it. To develop fault location system for power cable, we needed fault simulation system and we installed it physically and tested at various point. in this thesis, we describe on signal processing technology to detect fault location on power cable and on the result of tested fault location performance.
Location information will become increasingly important for future Pervasive Computing applications. Location tracking system of a moving device can be classified into two types of architectures: an active mobile architecture and a passive mobile architecture. In the former, a mobile device actively transmits signals for estimating distances to listeners. In the latter, a mobile device listens signals from beacons passively. Although the passive architecture such as Cricket location system is inexpensive, easy to set up, and safe, it is less precise than the active one. In this paper, we present a passive location system using Cricket Mote sensors which use RF and ultrasonic signals to estimate distances. In order to improve accuracy of the passive system, the transmission speed of ultrasound was compensated according to air temperature at the moment. Upper and lower bounds of a distance estimation were set up through measuring minimum and maximum distances that ultrasonic signal can reach to. Distance estimations beyond the upper and the lower bounds were filtered off as errors in our scheme. With collecting distance estimation data at various locations and comparing each distance estimation with real distance respectively, we proposed an equation to compensate the deviation at each point. Equations for proposed algorithm were derived to calculate relative coordinates of a moving device. At indoor and outdoor tests, average location error and average location tracking period were 3.5 cm and 0.5 second, respectively, which outperformed Cricket location system of MIT.
We propose ID-exchange protocol for Connectionless Location-Awareness Service (CLAS) to locate mobile nodes in indoor sensor network. When adapting location-awareness service to sensor network, the target system must be designed in accordance with various metrics which reflect the system requirement. We especially consider sustainability of the existing service which has been provided for its original purpose, such as environmental monitoring. The detailed meaning of sustainability here is that, even if location-awareness service is newly added to the existing service, the system must be assured to retain a stable network condition, and to deal with newly caused traffic properly. The CLAS ID-exchange protocol is especially designed for fixture and mobile nodes communication to achieve these properties. The protocol operates on 802.15.4 MAC layer to make mobile node work independently of the procedure to build routing table of fixture node, so a stable routing condition can be achieved even if there are many mobile nodes. Moreover, the dedicated frequency channel is assigned only for this protocol, so that traffic caused by location-awareness service can be distributed to another channel. A real system adapting the protocol was implemented to monitor fire and authorities' positions. We verified the overhead and elapsed time for location-awareness. The result shows the proposed protocol has a high performance in detecting speed, traffic distribution, and stability of overall network.
This paper describes the fault location calculation using neuro-fuzzy systems in combined transmission lines with underground power cables. Neuro-fuzzy systems used in this paper are composed of two parts for fault section and fault location. First, neuro-fuzzy system discriminates the fault section between overhead and underground with normalized detail coefficient obtained by wavelet transform. Normalized detail coefficients of voltage and current in half cycle information are used for the inputs of neuro-fuzzy system. As the result of neuro-fuzzy system for fault section, impedance of selected fault section is calculated and it is used as the inputs of the neuro-fuzzy systems for fault location. Neuro-fuzzy systems for fault location also consist of two parts. One calculates the fault location of overhead, and the other does for underground. Fault section is completely classified and neuro-fuzzy system for fault location calculates the distance from the relaying point. Neuro-fuzzy systems proposed in this paper shows the excellent results of fault section and fault location.
UGVs(Unmanned Ground Vehicles) are robots that can substitute humans in reconnaissance operations of potentially dangerous and contaminated sites. Currently, there have been active research on utilizing UGVs in military environments. Much resrach has been focused on exploiting the weakness of topology-based routing and instead utilize location-based routing for the networking of UGVs. It is generally assumed that location-based routing methods can fully utilize the location information gained from GPS. However, this may not be possible in tactical environments due to enemy GPS jamming and LOS(Line of Sight) limitations. To solve this problem, we propose a location-based routing scheme utilizing low control message that can calibrate the location information using GPS information as well as location of neighboring UGV, movement direct and speed information. Also utilizing topology-based routing scheme to solve incorrect location information in GPS jamming region.
This paper suggests the method for estimating a partial discharge (PD) location using divide of the inside transformer as a grid. The PD location is found swiftly and economically compared with the typical method detecting a PD. The reason is that the location of PD is detected in the section. The estimation of PD location is trained using the Neural Network. JavaNNS(Java Neural Network Simulator) and SNNS(Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator) are used for searching the location of PD. The simulation procedure is following, The transformer is assumed that the case is a regular hexahedron. The sensor is installed in a proper location. A section of PD location is set as a target, and training set is studied with several PD locations in the inside of the transformer. As a result of training process, the learning capability of neural network is excellent. The PD location is detected by division of internal structure of transformer and application of neural network.
