The purpose of a localization system is to estimate the coordinates of the geographic location of a mobile device. The accuracy of wireless localization is influenced by nonline-of-sight (NLOS) errors in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we present an improved time of arrival (TOA)-based localization method for wireless sensor networks. TOA-based localization estimates the geographic location of a mobile device using the distances between a mobile station (MS) and three or more base stations (BSs). However, each of the NLOS errors along a distance measured from an MS (device) to a BS (device) is different because of dissimilar obstacles in the direct signal path between the two devices. To accurately estimate the geographic location of a mobile device in TOA-based localization, we propose an optimized localization method with a BS selection scheme that selects three measured distances that contain a relatively small number of NLOS errors, in this paper. Performance evaluations are presented, and the experimental results are validated through comparisons of various localization methods with the proposed method.
In this paper, we develop an indoor localization device which embeds localization information into indoor light-emitting-diodes (LED) lighting systems. The key idea of our device is the use of the newly proposed "bit stuffing method". Through the use of stuff bits, our device is able to measure signal strengths even in transient states, which prohibits interference between lighting signals. The stuff bits also scatter the parts of the signal where the LED is turned on, thus provides quality indoor lighting. Additionally, for the indoor localization system based on RSSI and TDM to be practical, we propose methods for the control of LED lamps and compensation of received signals. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated through experiments with a low-cost implementation including an indoor navigation task.
In a ship block logistics application, acquisition of locations is required in order to identify location of the ship blocks. A Smart device equipped with a GPS sensor can be used as a mobile client for a ship block logistics application. However the precision of GPS components on a commercial smart device is not high enough. Therefore, using the GPS for localization may produce significant positioning errors in a ship block logistics system. This paper proposes a method to reduce errors in measuring locations using a smart device. Based on the knowledge of how the location information is used in a ship block logistics application, and the predictability of the client's moving line based on geographical layout of a shipyard area, our proposed technique enables a better prediction of the ship blocks location. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed technique can significantly reduce the positional error.
In this paper, we introduce indoor localization technologies categorizing them into ON/OFF switch and senor based, wireless communication based, and image based technologies. Then we describe several representative techniques for each of them, emphasizing their strengths and weaknesses. We define important performance issues for indoor localization technologies and analyze recent technologies according to the performance issues. Our analyses show that ON/OFF switch based technologies are difficult to install, but accurate and not limited by light. Wireless communication technologies are not limited by light nor distance (space) and do not need additional device. Image based technologies do not need additional device but are limited by light, and their accuracies are affected by light. We believe that this paper provide wise view and necessary information for recent indoor localization technologies.
In this paper, we propose an effective time-of-arrival (TOA)-based localization method with adaptive bias computation in indoor environments. The goal of the localization is to estimate an accurate target's location in wireless localization system. However, in indoor environments, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors block the signal propagation between target device and base station. The NLOS errors have significant effects on ranging between two devices for wireless localization. In TOA-based localization, finding the target's location inside the overlapped area in the TOA-circles is difficult. We present an effective localization method using compensated distance with adaptive bias computation. The proposed method is possible for the target's location to estimate an accurate location in the overlapped area using the measured distances with subtracted adaptive bias. Through localization experiments in indoor environments, estimation error is reduced comparing to the conventional localization methods.

Radio Frequency (RF)-based indoor localization technologies play significant roles in various Internet of Things (IoT) services (e.g., location-based service). Most such technologies require that all the devices comply with a specified technology (e.g., WiFi, ZigBee, and Bluetooth). However, this requirement limits its application scenarios in today's IoT context where multiple devices complied with different standards coexist in a shared environment. To bridge the gap, in this paper, we propose a cross-technology localization approach, which is able to localize target nodes using a different type of devices. Specifically, the proposed framework reuses the existing WiFi infrastructure without introducing additional cost to localize Non-WiFi device (i.e., ZigBee). The key idea is to leverage the interference between devices that share the same operating frequency (e.g., 2.4GHz). Such interference exhibits unique patterns that depend on the target device's location, thus it can be leveraged for cross-technology localization. The proposed framework uses Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to extract salient features of the received WiFi signals, and leverages Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), Gradient Boosting Regression Tree (GBRT) to improve the robustness of our system. We conduct experiments in real scenario and investigate the impact of different factors. Experimental results show that the average localization accuracy of our prototype can reach 1.54m, which demonstrates a promising direction of building cross-technology technologies to fulfill the needs of modern IoT context.
Localization is the most important functions in mobile robots. There are so many approaches to realize this essential function in wheel based mobile robots, but it is not easy to find similar examples in small underwater robots. It is presented the sonar localization system using ubiquitous sensor network for a fish robot in this paper. A fish robot uses GPS and sonar system to find exact localization. Although GPS is essential tool to obtain positional information, this device doesn't provide reasonable resolution in localization. To obtain more precise localization information, we use several Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN) motes with sonar system. Experimental results show that a fish robot obtains more detailed positional information.
Gait analysis is essential for leg diagnosis and rehabilitation for the patients, the handicapped and the elderly. The use of 3D motion capture device for gait analysis is very common for gait analysis. However, this device has several shortcomings including limited workspace, visibility and high price. Instead, we developed gait estimation system using gyroscopes. This system provides gait information including the number of gaits, stride and walking distance. With four gyroscope (one for each leg's thigh and calf) outputs, the proposed gait modeling estimates the movements of the hip, the knees and the feet. Complete pedestrian localization is implemented with gait information and the heading angle estimated from the rate gyro and the magnetic compass measurements. The developed system is very useful for diagnosis and the rehabilitation of the pedestrian at the hospital. It is also useful for indoor localization of the pedestrians.
Location-based service (LBS) is becoming an important part of the information technology (IT) business. Localization is a core technology for LBS because LBS is based on the position of each device or user. In case of outdoor, GPS - which is used to determine the position of a moving user - is the dominant technology. As satellite signal cannot reach indoor, GPS cannot be used in indoor environment. Therefore, research and study about indoor localization technology, which has the same accuracy as an outdoor GPS, is needed for "seamless LBS". For indoor localization, we consider the IEEE802.11 WLAN environment. Generally, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is used to obtain a specific position of the user under the WLAN environment. RSSI has a characteristic that is decreased over distance. To use RSSI at indoor localization, a mathematical model of RSSI, which reflects its characteristic, is used. However, this RSSI of the mathematical model is different from a real RSSI, which, in reality, has a sensitive parameter that is much affected by the propagation environment. This difference causes the occurrence of localization error. Thus, it is necessary to set a proper RSSI model in order to obtain an accurate localization result. We propose a method in which the parameters of the propagation environment are determined using only RSSI measurements obtained during localization.
