Experimental results for heat transfer characteristic and pressure gradient of hydrocarbon refrigerants (R-290, R-600a, R-1270) and HCFC refrigerant (R-22) during condensation inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which have one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.89 mm, 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm, 6.35 mm with 0.13 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation, respectively. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than those of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22 in 10.92 mm, 8 mm and 6.1 mm inner diameters. These results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

The relative magnitudes of the individual terms of the momentum equation are analyzed and compared by the analytical methods in open channel flow. The temporal variations of each term(local acceleration term, convective acceleration term, pressure force term, gravity force term, and friction force term) are analyzed for the influence factors to runoff expressed by the parameters of the momentum equation, stream slopes and roughness coefficients. The magnitudes of each term vary with the channel characteristics, especially when the roughness coefficients are dominant or for the mild stream slopes the pressure term can not be negligible. As a result of the characteristics of momentum equation in open channel flow, the acceleration terms are very small compared with the other terms. The magnitudes of local acceleration and convective acceleration offsets each other. The peak time of each term except the gravity term coincides with inflection point of the hydrograph rising limb each other.

The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics and pressure drop inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of gas turbine blades. The internal cooling passage is simulated using a square duct with h- and V-shaped rectangular ribs which have a 60。attack angle. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wail. The secondary flow patterns and the local heat transfer in the duct are changed significantly according to the rib orientation. A square duct with ∧ - and V-shaped ribs have two pairs of secondary flow due to the rib arrangement. Therefore, the average heat/mass transfer coefficients and pressure drop of ∧ - and V-shaped ribs are higher than those of the continuous ribs with 90$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}$attack angles. The ∧-shaped ribs have higher heat/mass transfer coefficients than the V-shaped ribs, and the uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient are increased with the discrete ribs due to the flow leakage and acceleration near the surface.

The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during 9as cooling process of $CO_2$ (R744) in a helically coiled copper tube with the inner diameter of 4.55 mm and outer diameter of 6.35 mm were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter a pre-heater and a helically coiled type gas cooler (test section). The refrigerant mass fluxes are varied from 200 to $800kg/m^2s$ and the inlet pressures of gas cooler are 7.5 to 10.0 MPa. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in a helically coiled tube are higher than those in a horizontal tube. The Pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively good agreement with those predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helically coiled tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with the correlation by Pitla et al. However. at the region near pseudo-critical temperature. the experiments indicate higher values than the Pitla et al correlation. Therefore, various experiments in helically coiled tubes have to be conducted and it is necessary to develop the reliable and accurate prediction determining the heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a helically coiled tube.

The heat transfer coefficient and Pressure drop during gas cooling process of $CO_2$ (R-744) in inclined helical coil copper tubes were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver. a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and a inclined helical coil type gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 2.45mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 200 to $600[kg/m^2s]$ and the inlet Pressures of gas cooler were 7.5 to 10.0 [MPa]. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in the inclined helical coil tubes increases with the increase of mass flux and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively good agreement with those Predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helical coil tube. In this study, the drag forces on a submerged square cylinder were analyzed using a three dimensional hydrodynamic model. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results to check the reliability of the numerical simulations, and the characteristics of the drag forces with the relative depths were analyzed by analyzing the pressure acting on the cylinder surface, which are normally difficult to measure experimentally. The numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square cylinder originate mainly from the pressure forces, and component of the shear forces decreased with increasing relative depth. The pressure coefficient distributions showed that in the case of a low relative depth, a relatively high pressure was formed in the front of a cylinder, and a relatively low pressure was formed in the rear, which gives a high drag coefficient. In a high relative depth, the pressure in the front decreased and pressure in the rear increased, which is a similar phenomenon to that normally observed in two dimensional square cylinder flow. The effect of the static pressure was analyzed and the surface elevation difference between the front and rear zone of a cylinder has a limited effect on the drag forces. Finally, the numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square are dominated by the dynamic pressure formed by three dimensional flow and the distribution of local surface elevation.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to investigate the thermophysical characteristics and the stability of liquid threads for various conditions. A cylindrical thread in the simulation domain is made of Lennard-Jones molecules. The surface tension of liquid threads can be determined from local densities, local normal and transverse components of the pressure force. In order to understand the effects of thread radii on surface tensions, the Tolman equation is modified on the basis of the cylindrical coordinates for prediction of surface tensions. Surface tensions calculated from the MD simulation agree with the prediction from the modified Tolman equation. In addition, surface tensions decrease linearly with increasing system temperature. For a binary system, the surface tension decreased linearly compared to that for a pure system with increasing binary ratio of solute molecules which have relatively large value of the affinity coefficient. For a fixed binary ratio, the surface tension increased slightly with the affinity coefficient and the maximum value appear around where the affinity coefficient is 1.5 and decreased rapidly for upper value of 1.5. In addition, the critical wavelengths of perturbations are proven to be directly proportional to the equimolar dividing radii of the liquid threads.

Internal flow characteristics within Y-jet atomizers and the local drop size distribution and cross-sectional averaged drop size at the outside were investigated with the liquid and air injection pressures, mixing port length of atomizers, and the liquid properties taken as parameters. To examine the effect of the liquid viscosity, glycerin-water mixtures were used in this study. The liquid viscosity plays only a minor role in determining the internal flow pattern and the spatial distribution shape of drops, but the drop sizes themselves generally increase with increasing of the liquid viscosity. An empirical correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results; the liquid discharge coefficient strongly depends on the liquid flow area at the mixing point which is proportional to the local volumetric quality(.betha.$_{Y}$), and the volumetric quality was included in the correlation. Regardless of the value of the liquid viscosity, the compressible flow through the gas port was well represented by the polytropic expansion process(k=1.2), and the mixing point pressure could be simply correlated to the aspect ratio( $l_{m}$/ $d_{m}$) of the mixing port and the air/liquid mass flow rate ratio( $W_{g}$/ $W_{f}$) as reported in the previous study.udy.udy.y.
In order to examine the effects of different wind deflectors on the wind load distribution characteristics of extra-large cooling towers, a comparative study of the distribution characteristics of wind pressures on the surface of three large cooling towers with typical wind deflectors and one tower without wind deflector was conducted using wind tunnel tests. These characteristics include aerodynamic parameters such as mean wind pressures, fluctuating wind pressures, peak factors, correlation coefficients, extreme wind pressures, drag coefficients and vorticity distribution. Then distribution regularities of different wind deflectors on global and local wind pressure of extra-large cooling towers was extracted, and finally the fitting formula of extreme wind pressure of the cooling towers with different wind deflectors was provided. The results showed that the large eddy simulation (LES) method used in this article could be used to accurately simulate wind loads of such extra-large cooling towers. The three typical wind deflectors could effectively reduce the average wind pressure of the negative pressure extreme regions in the central part of the tower, and were also effective in reducing the root of the variance of the fluctuating wind pressure in the upper-middle part of the windward side of the tower, with the curved air deflector showing particularly. All the different wind deflectors effectively reduced the wind pressure extremes of the middle and lower regions of the windward side of the tower and of the negative pressure extremes region, with the best effect occurring in the curved wind deflector. After the wind deflectors were installed the drag coefficient values of each layer of the middle and lower parts of the tower were significantly higher than that without wind deflector, but the effect on the drag coefficients of layers above the throat was weak. The peak factors for the windward side, the side and leeward side of the extra-large cooling towers with different wind deflectors were set as 3.29, 3.41 and 3.50, respectively.
When pipe components made of carbon steel in nuclear, fossil, and industry plants are exposed to flowing fluid, wall thinning caused by FAC(flow accelerated corrosion) can be generated and eventually ruptured at the position of pressure boundary. The aim of this study is to identify the locations at which local wall thinning occurs and to determine the turbulence coefficient related to local wall thinning. Experiment and numerical analyses for the tee sections of down scaled piping components were performed and the results were compared. In particular, flow visualization experiment which was used alkali metallic salt was performed to find actual location of local wall thinning inside tee components. In order to determine the relationship between turbulence coefficients and local wall thinning, numerical analyses were performed for tee components in the main feedwater systems. The turbulence coefficients based on the numerical analyses were compared with the local wall thinning based on the measured data. From the comparison of the results, the vertical flow velocity component(Vr) flowing to the wall after separating in the wall due to the geometrical configuration and colliding with the wall directly at an angle of some degree was analogous to the configuration of local wall thinning.
