Contrast Enhancement for Segmentation of Hippocampus on Brain MR Images

  • An image segmentation result depends on pre-processing steps such as contrast enhancement, edge detection, and smooth filtering etc. Especially medical images are low contrast and contain some noises. Therefore, the contrast enhancement and noise removal techniques are required in the pre-processing. In this study, we present an extension by a novel histogram equalization in which both local and global contrast is enhanced using neighborhood metrics. When checking neighborhood information, filters can simultaneously improve image quality. Most important is that original image information can be used for both global brightness preserving and local contrast enhancement, and image quality improvement filtering. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed method is more effective than other similar techniques reported previously.

  • In this parer, face recognition method which can be applied to ITCS (interactive TV control system) is proposed. We extracted ULBP(uniform local binary pattern) histogram feature from infra-red images, and we detected left-right eyes and face region by using SVM classifier. Then, We implemented face recognition system which is using Gabor transform and ULBP histogram feature and applied to personal verification for ITCS.

  • Edge Histogram Descriptor는 image의 edge 분포 정보를 표현하며 방향성을 가지는 Bio Image 검색에 있어 높은 검색 성능을 나타낸다. 그러나 Bio Image의 객체 분포의 특성으로 인해 지역적 edge 분포 비교는 충분한 검색 성능을 보장하지는 못한다. 본 논문에서는 특징 block을 이용한 효율적인 검색 알고리즘을 제안한다. Local histogram으로부터 Global bin을 얻어 image의 대표 방향성을 선정하고 특징 block을 선정한다. 특징 block의 비교는 edge 분포와 함께 주요 객체의 위치 정보를 더하는 효과를 가진다. Bio Image의 검색 실험에서 제안 알고리즘은 향상된 검색 성능을 보여준다. 또한 Bio image 검색을 위한 descriptor 조합 연구에도 적용 가능하여 검색 효율을 기대할 수 있다.

Human Action Recognition in Still Image Using Weighted Bag-of-Features and Ensemble Decision Trees (가중치 기반 Bag-of-Feature와 앙상블 결정 트리를 이용한 정지 영상에서의 인간 행동 인식)

  • This paper propose a human action recognition method that uses bag-of-features (BoF) based on CS-LBP (center-symmetric local binary pattern) and a spatial pyramid in addition to the random forest classifier. To construct the BoF, an image divided into dense regular grids and extract from each patch. A code word which is a visual vocabulary, is formed by k-means clustering of a random subset of patches. For enhanced action discrimination, local BoF histogram from three subdivided levels of a spatial pyramid is estimated, and a weighted BoF histogram is generated by concatenating the local histograms. For action classification, a random forest, which is an ensemble of decision trees, is built to model the distribution of each action class. The random forest combined with the weighted BoF histogram is successfully applied to Standford Action 40 including various human action images, and its classification performance is better than that of other methods. Furthermore, the proposed method allows action recognition to be performed in near real-time.

  • The purpose of this study is to build and to manage environment models with line segments from the sonar range data on obstacles in unknown and varied environments. The proposed method subsequently employs a two-stage data-transform process in order to extract environmental line segments from the range data on obstacles. In the first stage, the occupancy grid extracted from the range data is accumulated to a two-dimensional local histogram grid. In the second stage, a line histogram extracted from an local histogram gird is based on a Hough transform, and matching is a process of comparing each of the segments in the global line segments map against the line segments to detect similarity in overlap, orientation, and arrangement. Each of these tests is made by comparing one of the parameters in the segment representation. After the tests, new line segments are composed to the global line segments map. The proposed technique is illustrated by experiments in an indoor environment.

  • Video viewers can not understand enough entire video contents because most video is long length data of large capacity. This paper Propose efficient scene change detection and video abstracting using new shot clustering to solve this problem. Scene change detection is extracted by method that was merged color histogram with χ2 histogram. Clustering is performed by similarity measure using difference of local histogram and new shot merge algorithm. Furthermore, experimental result is represented by using Real TV broadcast program.

  • This paper proposes a unique shot boundary detection algorithm for the video indexing and/or browsing. Conventional methods based on the frame differences and the histogram differences are improved. Instead of using absolute frame differences, block by block based relative frame differences are employed. Frame adaptive thresholding values are also employed for the better detection. for the cases that the frame differences are not enough to detect the shot boundary, histogram differences are selectively applied. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces both the “false positive” errors and the “false negative” errors especially for the videos of dynamic local and/or global motions

Robustness of Face Recognition to Variations of Illumination on Mobile Devices Based on SVM

  • With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, it has become necessary to protect private information and content in these devices. Face recognition has been favored over conventional passwords or security keys, because it can be easily implemented using a built-in camera, while providing user convenience. However, because mobile devices can be used both indoors and outdoors, there can be many illumination changes, which can reduce the accuracy of face recognition. Therefore, we propose a new face recognition method on a mobile device robust to illumination variations. This research makes the following four original contributions. First, we compared the performance of face recognition with illumination variations on mobile devices for several illumination normalization procedures suitable for mobile devices with low processing power. These include the Retinex filter, histogram equalization and histogram stretching. Second, we compared the performance for global and local methods of face recognition such as PCA (Principal Component Analysis), LNMF (Local Non-negative Matrix Factorization) and LBP (Local Binary Pattern) using an integer-based kernel suitable for mobile devices having low processing power. Third, the characteristics of each method according to the illumination va iations are analyzed. Fourth, we use two matching scores for several methods of illumination normalization, Retinex and histogram stretching, which show the best and $2^{nd}$ best performances, respectively. These are used as the inputs of an SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier, which can increase the accuracy of face recognition. Experimental results with two databases (data collected by a mobile device and the AR database) showed that the accuracy of face recognition achieved by the proposed method was superior to that of other methods.

A Texture Classification Based on LBP by Using Intensity Differences between Pixels (화소간의 명암차를 이용한 LBP 기반 질감분류)

  • This paper presents a local binary pattern(LBP) for effectively classifying textures, which is based on the multidimensional intensity difference between the adjacent pixels in the block image. The intensity difference by considering the a extent of 4 directional changes(verticality, horizontality, diagonality, inverse diagonality) in brightness between the adjacent pixels is applied to reduce the computation load as a results of decreasing the levels of histogram for classifying textures of image. And the binary patterns that is represented by the relevant intensities within a block image, is also used to effectively classify the textures by accurately reflecting the local attributes. The proposed method has been applied to classify 24 block images from USC Texture Mosaic #2 of 128*128 pixels gray image. The block images are different in size and texture. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a speedy classification and makes a free size block images classify possible. In particular, the proposed method gives better results than the conventional LBP by increasing the range of histogram level reduction as the block size becomes larger.

  • In this paper, a method is proposed that enhances the performance of the facial expression recognition using template matching of Local Binary Pattern(LBP) histogram. In this method, the face image is segmented into blocks, and the LBP histogram is constructed to be used as the feature of the block. Block dissimilarity is calculated between a block of input image and the corresponding block of the model image. Image dissimilarity is defined as the weighted sum of the block dissimilarities. In conventional methods, the block weights are assigned by intuition. In this paper a new method is proposed that optimizes the weights from training samples. An experiment shows the recognition rate is enhanced by the proposed method.
